Resignations

The 2021 Hugo Administration team came on board, at short notice, at the start of this year. We were committed to the words in the 12 January statement by the DisCon III chair, Bill Lawhorn: "The Hugo Awards exist to celebrate and honor all of the creators chosen by the Worldcon membership. We should have considered those creators' needs and feelings through our policies and the messaging we used." It is clear that we have taken the process as far as we can, and that our input is no longer needed by the convention leadership. We are therefore resigning from ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:The images were released by lawmakers who then had a chance to question not the CEOs and decision makers who'd signed off on a business model that allowed such propaganda to be monetized, but their lawyers. As per usual, the top brass at the platforms were eager to deflect and deny any wrongdoing. The companies—not just Facebook, but also Twitter and Google—all claimed that they sent their chief counsels rather than the business decision makers because they were best positioned to respond to queries. But as their congressional testimony makes clear, the attorneys were there to ...

All photos: All rights reserved by Simon Foster, used with kind permission I'd never done stake boarding before on such a large scale. Yes, I'd put up the odd stake. So when the chance came to visit Chesham and Amersham, I thought I'd just pop in and show my face. However, our by-election team doesn't quite work like that. Firstly, they're incredibly welcoming. The sign of a good campaign is that it is geared up to help. From the brilliant front of house reception in the form of Chessie, to the stake board officer, to the team of ordinary volunteers, ...

So very pleased to see Sarah Green MP sworn in to the House of Commons this afternoon (I got permission to nip out of a meeting to watch it live!). https://t.co/iwWoUkAGgs — Colin Ross (@colinross1975) June 21, 2021 * Paul Walter is a Liberal Democrat activist. The Tories aren't revolting, at least over planning. Yesterday evening, they were told not to vote in the opposition debate over the planning bill. Yet it was clear from the debate that many remained unhappy with the proposals which contributed to the historic defeat in Chesham and Amersham. The debate lasted for just over three hours and 17 members did not get the chance to speak. All twelve Lib Dems voted for the opposition motion. There were no votes against as the Tories went into hiding at the end of the debate. Many of them might not like the planning ...

Many thanks to the residents who contacted me about a pole with parking sign on Lochee Road that had fallen over - not vandalism - rust at its base! I contacted the City Council about it to get the old pole removed and a new one installed and have received the following helpful feedback : "The sign and pole will have to be replaced and reinstated as the sign is there to inform drivers of the parking regulations that are currently in place. The Roads Maintenance Partnership will have to reinstate a new pole to replace the rusty one."

I don't often look at Classic FM for my news, but this story is worth repeating. On their website they report that the Welsh government has deleted official guidance which appeared to be based on a spoof news post on social media. They say official COVID-19 guidance for singers issued - and now deleted - by the Welsh government in light of the reopening of places of worship, appears to have been informed by a spoof social media news post, created by meme page Quire Memes to appear as if it was written by Classic FM. The Welsh Government has ...

The Joy of Six 1013

Adrian Sanders offers some wise words of caution on a 'progressive alliance': "The problem with pre-election pacts, rather than informal arrangements such as the pre 1997 one between Labour and ourselves where we stand but don't work in different seats, is that you cannot be sure where, or even if, a voter's likely second choices will be used the way the pact hoped. There is a danger that in some seats such a narrowing of voter choice will entrench the support of the candidate whom it was hoped would be unseated." What should a Liberal approach to building a more ...
