The Joy of Six 1014

"Thatcher ... would often pepper her speeches with talk of Hayek, Popper or Friedman. And that wasn't mere showboating: such men formed her worldview. It is not at all clear that Johnson has any equivalents (at least not since Juvenal) or even that he and his colleagues are interested in acquiring any." Rutland's own Chris Dillow exposes the intellectual decline of the right. Nick Cohen warns of the curbs on free speech contained in the government's draft online harms bill. "He is part of an establishment that operates on the blithe assumption that all skills are transferable, that an aptitude ...

Following on from the stunning by-election result last week in Chesham and Amersham, there's been plenty for Lib Dems to celebrate in this week's local government by-elections. An excellent gain in Chichester and a hold in Somerset West and Taunton has left us feeling very good for the second Friday in a row. The headline result of the night has to be Chichester East, following on from their great performance at the County elections in May. The local team worked hard and it showed: a 24.7% increase and taking the seat off the Tories from third is seriously impressive. They ...

So, the Secretary of Health has been caught with his tongue down the throat of someone who isn't his wife. On one level I am entirely unconcerned about what Mr Hancock does in his spare time and who he does ... Continue reading →

The midlife jokes at one's expense keep on coming. Once you reach middle age, you become fair game for being stereotyped. Some of it is good humour and some of it raises my heckles. The reference point for this rather ranty blog post is one of those wretched 'Dear Aunt Whatever' type letters which appeared ... According to reports across the media, Matt Hancock had an affair with an adviser to his department. This happens all the time and is barely a matter of public concern these days. Unless Gina Coladangelo had been hired, or her hiring, had been influenced by her relationship with the health secretary. Lib Dem leader Ed Davey hit it spot on in his response on Twitter this morning. The reason Matt Hancock should resign is that he is a terrible Health Secretary, not because of his private life. From the PPE scandal, the crisis in our care service and the unbelievably ...

The Guardian reports that individuals and companies linked to the oil and gas industries have donated more than £400,000 to the Conservative party in the past year, while the government mulled controversial new licences to explore the North Sea for fossil fuel production sites. The paper says that disclosures from last July to the end of March, the latest date for which data is available, show at least £419,000 was given to the Conservatives by donors with a strong interest in oil and gas, including in the North Sea, research by the environmental investigations group DeSmog and the Guardian has ...

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Trade Sarah Olney has called on the Government to not rush into the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership and to "balance our diplomatic interests with our economic ones." During the Commons debate on the TPP, which will increase GDP by only 0.017%, Sarah urged the Government to consider whether the risks of entering this partnership was in the interests of the public. Speaking after the debate, Sarah Olney MP said: "The Government have hailed this new agreement as a remedy to post-Brexit trade but in reality it's set to be a drop in the ocean."Our most important trading ...

Newsmoggie does not usually stray into Conservative territory, except to dig up gardens for essential purposes of course. But it seems that the Conservatives really don't want another repeat of their glorious leader Boris Johnson. They have introduced psychometric testing for new candidates. While Newsmoggie is not an expert on such tests, they do seem aimed to introduce conformality and normality, treating potential MPs like dogs to be trained and not like us free roaming cats. Would Boris Johnson pass a psychometric test? Michael Gove? Matt Hancock? Or even Daniel Kawczynski, who has had to apologise after imbibing alcohol before ...
