Responding to the Government winning a vote to abandon its commitment on international development spending, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey MP said: "Boris Johnson has just switched off millions of Conservative voters by callously breaking his promise and abandoning millions of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our world."It's decisions like this that will make millions of voters, especially in the Blue Wall, move away from the Conservatives in droves. This Conservative Government has lost touch with the values of our country."Their unlawful tests for aid spending are the height of cynicism - as they were designed ...

In the early hours of this morning, a car belonging to Cllr Arooj Shah was firebombed. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. From the Oldham Times: A force spokesman said: "Police were called just before 1:30am on Tuesday, July 13 to reports of a vehicle on fire in the Glodwick area in Oldham. Wendy Chamberlain, MP for North East Fife attacked the government's commitment to reducing the overseas aid budget below 0.7% in the House of Commons today. It is a straight choice: do we return to 0.7%, as we were all elected to this place to do, or do we fail to be the global leader on this issue that the UK has been to this point?... the poorest will be hardest hit by these cuts. The reality of the covid pandemic is that no one is safe until everyone is safe... The fiscal tests for development spending presented today are the ...

Ever since Boris won the 2019 General Election, there has been growing talk of the need for a "progressive alliance" to stop the Tories winning the next election. Quite what this might involve is unclear. Some would like a national pact between Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens so only one party would stand in each seat, and others want simply to promote greater tactical voting and other parties to scale back their campaigning where another party is the main challenger. Helpfully, the by-elections in both Batley and Spen and Chesham & Amersham give us some insight into how ...

I commented on this newly traffic-lighted junction back in April referencing it to Maghull's 'Berlin Wall' i.e. the A59 which splits the town in half and makes getting from one side to the other on foot or on a cycle hard going. Here's a link back to that previous posting:- And here's a photo I took back in April whilst the new junction was being constructed:- Firstly, let me say that that this junction really did need upgrading as there have been some really bad accidents associated with it. After completion, I tried crossing it from the western side ...

One of the 'political' highlights of summer for the last many years is the annual Pride march through town. Even when it has poured down it has failed to dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the participants. Part of the ... Continue reading →

Personally, I have no problem with sports personalities getting involved in politics. They have a voice, a ready audience and they live in the same society as we do. Their views are as valid as the next person's and they are entitled to use the platform they have to express them. And like everybody else I am full of admiration for the work being carried out and the example set by the likes of Marcus Rashford and many of his colleagues. What I have never understood is why government ministers are so uncomfortable with all of this. Yes, they are ...

The results of my straw poll are in. Just three in ten people want all restrictions lifted next Monday. Sajid Javid and Boris Johnson yesterday announced they are sticking to their plan to remove almost all restrictions on 19 July. But fewer than one-third of the 395 respondents think that all restrictions should end next Monday. From what I have learnt in the past week, wearing of face masks is the main concern people have about the easing of restrictions. We learnt from Javid yesterday that the easing of almost all restrictions is not "irreversible" as Johnson had previously claimed: ...

When you think of Lib Dem conference, you think of debates, packed fringe meetings with varying quality of buffets and events like the Glee Club. These things are difficult to replicate on a virtual platform, but the Federal Conference Committee has flagged up Pilates classes, a comedy night and a classical music concert with an orchestra as just a few of the attractions at this year's digital Autumn Conference, to be held from 17-21 September. Registration is now open, as FCC Chair Nick De Costa announced in an email to members: At our conference you can shape party policy, virtually ...

Last week, I had a very useful site visit with our local environment manager and a member of West End Community Council about environmental issues in the part of Riverside Drive east of the Bridgeview Restaurant. We agreed the following : Move a dog bin away from the seating area east of the restaurant so the potentially smelly bin is not close to seating and move it further east so there is better spacing between dog bins (there's already one just slightly west of the existing one anyway).Provide a new and decent sized litter bin near the seating. We also looked ...

Embed from Getty Images"It was incredibly cringe. We all knew that," says one senior Liberal Democrat. "We all thought, this is awful, but it's also brilliant. And it worked, right?" Ailbhe Rea - her Twitter handle is @PronouncedAlva - reveals that the blue wall Ed Davey smashed down with his hammer five days was ordered from Grantham five days before the Chesham and Amersham by-election. And it did work: Overnight, the "blue wall" was cemented in the political lexicon to name and amplify an idea that had barely been acknowledged before: that the Conservatives are vulnerable in a lot of ...
