It's a tribute to the quality of William Hague's biography of the great anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce that, despite coming out back in 2008, it still feels fresh and relevant in the light of recent events.

Rates of detected Covid-19 infections are falling rapidly in England, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. It is not known at this stage whether this is a result of growing herd immunity and high vaccination rates. Undoubtedly both are helping. But we have seen many blips that have proven to be a mirage generated by testing capacity. I hope it is genuine and not that people have been reluctant to get tested during the pingdemic. Although infection rates remain high it does look more encouraging. A week ago, the seven day infection rate in Shropshire was 399 per 100,000 people. The ...

A long weekend in Paris

It's F's 22nd birthday today - Happy Birthday! - and as an early treat we went toParis last weekend. I go to Paris now and then for work - a bit less so at the moment obviously - but I realised that possibly the last time I stayed overnight as a tourist was on an inter-rail with Anne in 1992, the year before we got married. We have all changed a bit since then. It was also the first nights outside Belgium for me and F since our trip to Burgundy and Switzerland this time last year. F had not ...

Attacks on our fragile democracy are ramping up. The evidence comes in a raft of recent Government proposals that include voter ID cards, curbs on peaceful protest and plans to introduce more elections by First Past the Post (FPTP). Take the controversial plan to introduce voter ID cards, proposed as part of the Elections Bill. This would actually disenfranchise millions more voters. Ministers say asking voters to prove their identities will safeguard against potential voter fraud in polling stations. They also claim that 'showing identification is something people of all backgrounds do every day'. But I'm not convinced there is ...

Despite the findings of the Intelligence and Security Committee last year that failures at the heart of Government have allowed the Russians to interfere and influence our democracy, it seems there is no stopping them from pushing funds at the Tories. The Mirror reports that new analysis has found the Conservative Party has accepted £280,000 from Russia-linked donors in the year since the publication of the Russia Report. And almost £2 million in Russian-linked cash has been donated to the Tories since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister. The paper adds for good measure, that none of the 21 recommendations of ...

I don't believe in the concept of "guilty pleasures" anymore as I'm no longer trying to impress the imaginary cool people in my head, as Alexei Sayle once put it.. After last week's Beach Baby, here is another song that I once felt guilty about liking. I first came across it in the early 1990s via an unlikely source. The great East Midlands broadcaster John Shaw was giving up is Sunday night show Here Be Dragons because it no longer suited the management of the independent station Leicester Sound. This was the penultimate record he played and, as he said, ...

In this weekend's review, Tom Arms asks, who you believe, Cummins or Johnson? Spyware produced by an Israeli company and sold to right-wing governments for spying on domestic and foreign opponents. The Israeli government's denials of not being involved is fooling no one. The arrest and imprisonment of Jacob Zuma whom many Zulus see as their leader despite his flaws, has led to riots but his arrest was only the spark. Some are claiming that the Florida-based Haitian Pastor Christian Emmanuel Sanon was the man behind the murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moisie. On more cheerful news, it is a ...
