See, I've fixed the problem with the Times headline this morning. A mischievous headline writer gave the impression that Alex Cole-Hamilton as new Scottish Lib Dem leader was prepared to work with the Tories to save the Union. That's not quite what he said. He was talking about offering something very different to the Boris and Nicola show: If the choice boils down to Boris Johnson's vision of the union versus Nicola Sturgeon's of independence, then everyone loses. We don't need to settle for that. Scottish Liberal Democrats have never been satisfied with the union as it currently stands. Alex ...

"War, what is it good for?" Edwin Starr and many others sang the anthem of the beginning of the 1970s. It picked up the mood of the moment. I recall as an underage drinker roaring out "Absolutely nothin'!" in response to the question at weekend discos. We were all talking about the war in Vietnam, not then aware of war in Cambodia. But most of what I had learnt about war was from history books and the occasional classroom lecture. It was distant, even anodyne. This August, we face what is being described "Biden's Saigon moment". Kabul could fall with ...

The Truman Show

The Truman Show won the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1999, beating three other films and a Babylon 5 episode. I have not seen any of the losing films, which were Dark City, Pleasantville and Star Trek: Insurrection, in that order. IMDB users rate the Truman Show 3rd of the year's films on one system and 4th on the other, with only Saving Private Ryan ahead of it on both systems; it is well ahead of that year's Oscar winner, Shakespeare in Love (which is why I'm doing it first). None of the cast appears to have been in ...

For all the shock-horror accounts from some about a country riven by disputes over cancel culture, the reality is rather different. Half of people have not even heard of attempts to cancel anyone in the last few months. This figure comes from new polling by Deltapoll, who asked, "There have been reports of campaigns, often beginning on social media, that set out to 'cancel' specific celebrities and other public figures because of things they have said or done. Have you heard about this happening in the last couple of months?" Exactly half of people (50%) picked the answer, "No, I ...

A strange phenomenon has befallen me. It happens every morning. The weekend does not provide respite. The alarm clock goes off and a feeling of dread comes over me. I don't get out of bed ready to embrace the day the way I used to. I loved early mornings – 'seize the day' and all ... The post Morning Anxiety in Midlife appeared first on A Midlifer in London .

I welcome guest posts on Liberal England and am happy to publish ones on subjects far beyond the Liberal Democrats and British politics. In fact I could do with some guest posts. I am now a full-time carer, which means I am struggling to find the time to come up with longer posts. 100 days ago I had the honour of being elected as a Liberal Democrat London-Wide Assembly Member. We doubled our representation at City Hall and became a group again, with Caroline Pidgeon as the leader. I couldn't have done it without the help and support of hundreds of members and activists, the fantastic team of GLA candidates, team members led by Anood Al-Samerai and the inspiring Mayoral candidates Luisa Porritt. Thank you to all who achieved this result. Now that there's two of us in the London Assembly we can double our efforts, double our reach and even double our ...

The Joy of Six 1021

Jane Dodds argues that Wales can thrive with a basic income: "A basic income has five core characteristics: It's paid in cash, so it's money you can spend on whatever you want. It's paid regularly, so you know the next payment is coming. It's for individuals, with each person getting their own basic income, paid to the individual not the household. It's unconditional, so you don't have to work or make any promises to get it. It's universal, so everyone gets it." The single transferable vote breaks open one-party fiefdoms. Don't take my word for it: listen to Scottish Conservative ...

The government have announced there will not be a price cap on PCR SARS-CoV-2 tests for those who travel. Instead, the government has only offered a review of private companies who sell PCR tests for holidaymakers and people travelling abroad to see family. Responding to the embargoed government announcement, Munira Wilson MP, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Health said: "It is disgraceful that private companies are profiteering from the pandemic, and this announcement does nothing to stop that. "The Health Secretary is merely tinkering around the edges. He needs to stop the dithering and finally introduce a price cap for PCR ...
