Writing on Twitter, Lib Dem Foreign Affairs spokesperson Layla Moran has set out the key humanitarian step the government must take in the light of news from Afghanistan: It's now or never to save innocent people from the Taliban's terror. Lib Dems are calling for an immediate commitment to resettle at least 20k Afghan refugees in the UK. Priority should be those most at risk through an emergency Women & Girls Resettlement Scheme. This must be backed up with proper funding for local councils to house, support and integrate them without placing even more strain on already overstretched budgets. And ...

Second frame of third chapter: Yajna: "We still have not been accepted as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, despite our diplomatic efforts." I read the first volume in this series a couple of months ago, and enjoyed it; the second keeps up the pace, with a well-realised set of characters stealing a giant nuclear-powered battle robot from its resting place in Bombay and bringing it towards its destiny in the Algerian desert; meanwhile the baby born at the end of the previous volume has a very mysterious mark on its forehead which seems linked with the mysterious ...

Lord Peter Smith RIP

I've just picked up on the passing of Lord Peter Smith from the blogsite of Jim Hancock – This is what Jim had to say about him – 'I was sad to hear of the passing of Lord Smith of Wigan. He was one of the most significant figures in local government in the North West in the last 40 years, although his profile was low. He led his local authority for 27 years and was leader of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) for 21 years. His quiet ability to bring together ten competing local councils and make ...

Around the country, train services are returning to normal timetables. Not though on Transport for Wales, where services along the Marches line have been halved. This leading to overcrowded carriages and an increased risk of Covid-19 transmission. Notifications such as the one above at Ludlow rail station a few days ago are no use if overcrowded trains are only running hourly. If you are on your way to an essential meeting or hospital appointment you will have no choice but to get the train even if it is overcrowded. At the end of 2019, there were 26 trains from Ludlow ...

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has fired the starting gun on a snap federal election set for 20th September. The election is the third time in six years that Canadians have gone to the polls to elect the government in Ottawa. Trudeau's goal is obvious - to win a majority. The timing is right for the Liberal government, as their response to the Covid pandemic has seen them surge ahead in the polls. At the 2019 federal election, Trudeau's Liberals lost their majority, and governed from a position 13 seats short of the 170 needed for overall power. Over the ...

This forthcoming weekend again sees Frances and John Dent in Glamis Drive open their lovely garden to residents as part of Scotland's Gardens Scheme. Not only is a visit to the garden a pleasure - it also helps raise funds for Dundee Maggie's Centre at Ninewells. You can get full details below :

The British Pilgrimage Trust has a page on St Morrell's Round - an 18-mile circular route within Leicestershire. The round is inspired by the medieval pilgrimages made to St Morrell's Chapel on the hillside near Hallaton. Morrell, who died in 453AD, was Bishop of Anger in North-West France. He went into self-imposed exile overseas before returning to be beatified for performing the miracle of Renatus, which is shown on a mural in Anger cathedral. Some 800 years later a Norman overlord built a chapel in Hallaton and dedicated it to St Morrell. This is the only church in Britain mentioning ...
