Four principal authority council by-elections this week, and all four have Liberal Democrat candidates, a repeat of last week's full slate. This week's full slate is particularly welcome as two of the wards didn't have Lib Dem candidates either of the last two times they were up. The first result in is one you may see reported in different ways, as it was for a seat that the Conservatives won at the last election but where the winner switched to independents. So Labour's gain is either from independents or Conservatives depending on how you look at it: Strood North (Medway ...

Freebies

Every Parliamentarian in every UK nation is used to the freebie merry go round, and some take advantage more than most. When I was a Welsh Assembly Member I started off going to the odd one just for the novelty value but soon got on a trajectory of refusing the vast majority of those that came into my office. After a while the invitations started to dry up. I guess I was written off a lost cause. In fact, enjoyable as they are, these little excursions do have a cost associated with them. Our hosts are not just there for ...

I've recently read the agenda items that my local council have put on their website and I'm dismayed that the term 'Open Spaces' is being adopted instead of 'Green Spaces.' This for me is far more than simple semantics. I don't doubt that our Borough does indeed have many Open Spaces, but the desire to treat these as synonymous with Green Spaces is an hugely cynical move. Like I needed the cosmos to remind me of the difference between me and Rudy. Soon as we got into the limo, Rudy took a call on his cell. The driver took us to a restaurant on Park Avenue South. I couldn't even pronounce the name of it. It looked French. Rudy disconnected his call soon as he left the car and said, ...

The Armed Forces Covenant protects UK military veterans and their families. In the i Ed Davy has called for the Covenant to be extended to include Afghan soldiers and interpreters who have been working with the British forces in Afghanistan. He says: The UK owes a huge debt of gratitude to all the Afghan citizens who heroically took a stand and worked alongside our brave men and women on the ground over the past 20 years. Without their selflessness, we simply couldn't have achieved what we did and undoubtedly more lives would've been lost. It is only right that their ...

Residents will be aware that, at the re-opening of the Riverside recycling centre last year, after the first lockdown, service provision was reduced and did not include paper/cardboard recycling. This was due to social distancing and queuing necessity at the time. I have been pressing for full recycling services to recommence and have now had this helpful update from the City Council's Waste Services Manager : "Following the announcement last week we are reviewing the implications and what control measures are now required in line with industry and government guidance. We are also speaking with colleagues in neighbouring authorities. We ...
