Last night Paul Browne won a Rutland Council by-election for the Liberal Democrats, polling two-thirds of the vote in the Oakham South ward and gaining it from the Conservatives. People soon started tweeting that he had fought a seat for the Liberal Party at the 1970 general election. The trouble was that no one said which one it was. I checked, and it wasn't the Rutland and Stamford constituency that existed in those days. Thanks to a comment on last night's post, I can now reveal that Paul fought Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire. He came third and the seat was gained ...

An update on financial saga around Northampton Town Football Club, which earlier this year resulted in seven people being charged over donations made to the Conservative Party in 2014. The BBC reports: A hypnotherapist has been fined £6,000 after admitting not properly declaring political contributions in a case linked to a missing £10.25m loan to Northampton Town FC. Alan Mayfield made the £10,000 payment to Northampton South Conservative Association in 2014 without declaring he was not the source of the funds... Mayfield, 64, of Hill Farm Road, Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire, was charged by detectives investigating the disappearance of £10.25m ...

Seven principal authority council by-elections this week, and all seven with Liberal Democrat candidates. That's one up on the last time these seats were fought. Plus also a more unusual by-election: for the Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner after the elected Conservative did not take up the seat due to been illegible to be elected. First in, a big swing to the Lib Dems in Dover, in a ward where the party was behind both Conservatives and independents last time: A great effort by Anne Fox and the team in Dover District Council, Sandwich ward! Conservative: 721 (51.6%, -18.8) Lib ...

One sentence to sum up the Liberal Democrats: Liberals see the best in things. We celebrate diversity and nonconformity and if something isn't working we try to fix it or we fight for reform. Here, in full, is Alex Cole-Hamilton's first speech as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. It was a belter that brought a tear to my eye. He started by talking about Maddy Planche, the young activist who introduced him. Another couple of decades and we might well be holding a big rally when she takes over the leadership. Alex paid tribute to Willie Rennie's 10 years ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:A bomb had flattened a factory in the heart of the territory the Drofen had been spotted in most often. We made our way there just before the sun went down. Not that you could actually see the sun through the cloud. As we left, just outside her house, Isabella gave Erimem a huge hug. Not me or Tom, you understand, just her. Yuri held out a pistol to Erimem and she slipped it into a pocket inside her coat. She had her sword as well. I was relieved she wasn't going into this unarmed but ...

The return of MPs to Westminster this week was a significant moment. Not for the abandoned people of Afghanistan, perhaps, whose immediate concerns probably do not include listening to the Prime Minister's justifications for being absent from his post as Kabul fell. The needs of the Afghan people are as far removed from the Westminster circus as it is possible to imagine. For while, for example, there is a real debate on how many asylum seekers this country should take, which will have enormous impact on the lives of those affected, Britain has never looked so peripheral in an issue ...

Shropshire Lib Dems are joining councillors and activists across the country in calling on their councils and MPs for greater and faster action on the Afghan refugee crisis. Many councillors are lobbing their MPs, including Carshalton & Wallington. There is a row going on in Guilford, where the Lib Dems are getting on with the job but the Conservatives are trying to score political points. Elsewhere, there are some difficulties in councils acting refugees because of budget and housing constraints. I am pleased and proud to live in a county that is welcoming to refugees. It is always a challenge ...

Yesterday, I put out the following tweet: Brexit was based on four assumptions: 1. It would cause the EU to collapse. 2. We'd get all the benefits of the SM without having to follow the rules. 3. We'd get a great trade deal with the US. 4. There would be a painless solution to the NI problem. None of these happened. A reaction from a lot of Brexiteers to this tweet has been: that's not why I voted for Brexit. Another reaction which goes further than that is: no one thought Brexit would bring those four things to fruition, what ...

Great news from Rutland tonight! The Liberal Democrats have gained the Oakham South ward of Rutland Council from the Conservatives. The result: Lib Dems: 886 (67.8%, +9.8%) Conservatives: 420 (32.2%, -9.8%) The percentage gained or lost is a comparison with the last time the ward was fought, which was May 2019. And if you're wondering how this can be a Lib Dem gain, the answer is that Oakham South is a three-member ward and we put up only one candidate against a slate of three Tories. The Lib Dem (Joanna Burrows) still topped the poll and tonight we took the ...
