The Mobile Household Recycling Crew will be visiting Acocks Green again next Monday, 1st November. This time they will be in the North of the ward, parking up on Cedars Avenue in the Stockfield Estate. They will there from 7am to midday. They can take normal household rubbish, recycling, garden waste and bigger household items. They can't take building rubble, white goods or hazardous material. One of the consequences that we warned against during the referendum was that one of the consequences of Brexit would be the whittling away of environmental standards which had emanated from the EU. These were not imposed on us by ... Continue reading →

Been a while since the last Tom Scott video I shared, but this one is about transport, the environment and how to fill a gap in future government tax revenues.

Second paragraph of third chapter:He came in through the porch, wreathed in smiles, his bony hands knotted together and his eyes darting all around. 'Ooh, yes. Lovely! Smashing dado. You've got this place very nice, I must say.' He glanced at the various stuļ¬€ed animal heads that lined the hallway. Relics of the previous owner, a Colonel of Dragoons, who had shot every living thing he could set his rheumy old eyes on. There was an empty space on the wall - above a lioness and adjacent to a warthog - and the Doctor wondered what might go there.Novelisation of ...

2021 Hugo novelettes

Before I get started, I just want to say that these are all really good. Some years it feels like the novelette is the ideal range for speculative fiction, and this is one of those years. I wish that all of these could win. 6) "Burn, or the Episodic Life of Sam Wells as a Super", A.T. Greenblatt. Second paragraph of third section:At least that's what he keeps telling himself. His new office is really quite large and nice. Or would be if the floor wasn't smothered by boxes and files. Or if the whole set up didn't look like ...

I chose to initiate a short debate, on the integrity of our electoral process for my final "valedictory" speech in the House of Lords. After so many years of working with leading reformers in other parties - Robin Cook and Ken Clarke, for example – I deplored the lack of cross-party co-operation that this government have created. They have made few attempts to conserve the union, the reputation of Britain around the world or the rule of law, but also the traditional purpose of their own party. Ministers even wish to opt out of the European Convention on Human Rights, ...

On the 23rd of October, the Liberal Democrats Abroad and the Liberal Democrats European Group held a discussion session with Irish Senator Timmy Dooley about the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe's contribution to the Conference on the Future of Europe. Mr Dooley underlined the importance of hearing British views on Europe's future, to help learn the lessons from Brexit, meet citizens' expectations, and shape the EU into an organisation that the British people would be excited to rejoin. In health, he mentioned the disillusionment caused by an initially slow response to vaccine procurement. Things have vastly improved since ...

Ludlow Community Hospital has been under various degrees of threat over the last decade. Despite local protests, the maternity unit was closed. Births are now only supported at the main hospitals or at home. Or community hospital provides pre- and post-natal care in the more modern buildings, some of which are not used. That has left the long neglected former infirmary building empty - that's the red brick building ahead as you enter the top car park. The building has been in poor repair for many years and needs substantial investment to make it fit for any purpose. The former ...

Rishi Sunak will be presenting his autumn budget on 27th October. Currently inflation is rising with wages increasing up to 7% in some sectors, quantitative easing is due to end at the end of the year. Rishi Sunak has stated he wants to reduce the deficit. The economic outlook is not clear, but I think Rishi Sunak should assume that the increase in inflation will only be short-term and the government and the Bank of England will not need to take any action to reduce inflation. The ending of the Covid support schemes will reduce government spending by £100 billion. ...

The infection rate, the number of cases per 100,000 people over seven days, reached 885 in Ludlow in the week to 17 October. That was more double the infection rate for England (388) and Shropshire (485) and considerably higher than for Telford & Wrekin (593). Although rates are now beginning to fall, they still remain at an all time high for our town. It may be that Shropshire and Ludlow are playing catch up. The unitary area and our town had lower infection rates than much of the country during 2020. That could have led to a lower community immunity. ...

The Guardian highlights a growing trend in the UK Government to block and delay freedom of information requests, leading to accusations that they are waging a secret war against transparency. They say that in a report published on Monday, the investigative journalism website openDemocracy alleged that last year was the worst year for transparency since the Freedom of Information Act came into force in 2005: It highlighted the government's own figures that show that in 2020, 41% of freedom of information requests by the public to central government departments were granted in full. Government statisticians acknowledge that "this is the ...
