"Come and discover an often overlooked part of England," says the website for this month's Harborough District Walking Festival: The Harborough district is an area of rolling countryside, ancient pastures and farmland, streams, woodland spinneys and beautiful villages. Canals, battles and buried treasure are all there to be explored - not to mention local characters and ancient customs. All the Festival walks are led by two experienced guides, so your walk will be enhanced with fascinating details of the local area and its history Thursday 26 May Morning walk: Rolleston and Noseley (no stiles) Afternoon walk: Tugby, Rolleston and Skeffington ...

More on the tractor porn by-election from Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, staking out the Lib Dem position as the main challenger to the Tories.

We've had six national voting intention polls come out with fieldwork at least in part in the past week. Six firms, six methodologies.

There is a stereotype around and about. That farmers vote Tory. Of course, many farmers vote Tory as do many non-farmers. But a growing number of farmers are supporting the Lib Dems. We saw this in North Shropshire where orange diamonds went up in fields across the constituency. This week, Stuart Roberts the outgoing deputy president of the National Farmers Union (NFU), previously a Conservative councillor, joined the Liberal Democrats. There is a modal shift underway in rural areas. Areas and occupations previously seen as "true blue" are getting fed up with the way they have been ignored by the ...

This is a third and final choice of a Sunday music video inspired by some of my mother's favourite songs. Is That All There Is? must have appeared in the house when I was nine, and I remember thinking it wonderfully grown up. Today I note that it was written by the classic team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and that the arrangement was by Randy Newman, who also plays the piano. And Peggy Lee's performance is simply perfect. Is that all there is? was the last thing I thought after my mother's funeral, which went off wonderfully and ...

In previous years there were 2 wards in Gateshead in which the Green Party was thought to have an interest: Saltwell and Crawcrook and Greenside. This year we saw an interesting development in Saltwell. The Green Party candidate of the previous year, Rachel Mary Cabral, is standing again, but without a party description. Somehow, the nomination forms have been handed in without being fully

I was rather amused by the absurdity of Oliver Dowden's claims of an electoral pact between Lib Dems and Labour. The Tory Party chairman based his fantasy story on Labour standing more candidates in the North while the Lib Dems are standing more candidates in the South. Perhaps Mr Dowden should visit Gateshead where, incidentally, Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dems are each fielding full slates

This from the Green Party is very much not the same as the Liberal Democrat approach to standing up to dictators...

Tom Arms' World Review

Elon Musk is a brilliant entrepreneur and the world's richest man. He also has a gargantuan ego, mercurial personality and thinks big. Tesla was developed to create a carbon-free planet. Space X is designed to give humanity a Martian bolthole in case we fail on Earth. His takeover of Twitter is, in his words, the result of a "strong intuitive sense that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important for the future of civilisation." Musk is a free speech absolutist. He is opposed to Twitter's banning of Donald Trump but would be likely ...

Dirty money in the UK

The UK has for a long time enabled the Russian oligarchs, who were the power behind Putin, to build up their wealth and influence. We are in no position to criticise the flow of dirty money that has done so much to support international criminality. But all that has changed, or has it? The government's Economic Crime Bill was rushed through parliament last month in a bid to "flush out" illicitly-obtained wealth. It created a new register requiring overseas companies to reveal the name of the "beneficial owner" of properties held in the UK. But it is not enough, and ...

Following residents asking my colleague Michael Crichton and me if an additional litter bin could be placed in the grass area at Oxford Street/Eton Street, we contacted the council and this has now been provided. We have also asked for more frequent emptying of the nearby dog bin, at the request of residents.
