Freda Jackson, my new favourite actress, was the daughter of a Nottingham railwayman but learnt her craft in repertory theatre in Northampton. Another young actor in the company at the time was Errol Flynn and it is is rumoured that he and Jackson had a fling. As NottinghamshireLive once put it:You can understand why notorious womaniser Errol Flynn might have been attracted to Nottingham-born actress Freda Jackson. Flynn, the dashing actor with matinee idol looks, and Jackson, a dark-haired beauty, shared many a scene together as they learned their craft with the Northampton Repertory Theatre in the years before the ...

On page 382 of his "Modernity Britain: a shake of the dice,1959-62" historian David Kynaston, picks out "Orpington" as "perhaps the most famous by-election of the century . . .where. . .Eric Lubbock . . . overturned a Conservative majority of almost 15 000 into a stunning Liberal victory of almost 8 000." Well, although we are still only in the first quarter of it, the 21st Century can beat that. In Tiverton and Honiton we Liberal Democrats have overturned a majority of over 24 000 with a stunning victory of over 6 000. Rapture indeed, and many congratulations to ...

In 1968, Bobby Kennedy made a much-celebrated speech in which he denigrated Gross National Product (GNP, now usually replaced by Gross Domestic Product, GDP) as a measure of America's well-being. He said: ...[it] counts air pollution and cigarette advertising, and ambulances to clear our highways of carnage. It counts special locks for our doors and the jails for the people who break them ... Yet [it] does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our ...

There was no surprise about yesterday's decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn the historic Roe vs Wade decision. The ruling, which ended half a century of constitutional protection for abortion, had been leaked the beginning of May. The ruling, from which three Democrat judges dissented, is expected to further divide the nation ahead of November's midterm elections. The verdict does not make abortion illegal in the USA but it does allow individual states to pass their own laws restricting abortion to the earliest weeks of pregnancy or situations such as rape. The ruling is likely to stoke further ...

Residents will recall that we recently highlighted to us repairs and upgrades required at the Roseangle playpark - examples below. We reported this to the City Council and have now received the following update from environment management : "We are struggling to get contractors in just now and most local authorities are requesting similar issues with play installers. This has had a knock on effect internally too as we have had a few retirements and we are currently recruiting. We are working through various works in parks and it is key that we have safe play areas and will get ...

With the arguable exception of Derek Underwood, the greatest English spin bowler of my lifetime is Graeme Swann. He was so good that England were happy to go into tests with only three seamers if he was in the side. Not only that, he was made useful - and somehow infuriating to the opposition - runs at 8 or 9 and was a good slip fielder. Here he discusses his career and the art of bowling off spin with Michael Atherton. This is just the sort of analysis you want from a commentator but, with the notable exception this summer ...
