A year or two ago, while I was caring for my mother, I came across the intriguing fact that there is a derelict Catholic school from the 19th century still standing in the centre of Leicester. Trouble is, I forgot its precise location and only rediscovered it the other day. So today I got to see the building itself. St Patrick's School is a fine building standing in the improbably named Royal East Street. I suspect the street used to be longer: the school end of it is a cul-de-sac and the other end peters our in a car park ...

In reporting the aftermath of the Liberal Democrats' most recent by-election victory, Lord Bonkers lets us see his human side. Life's not all orchard doughties and exploding focuses here, you know. Saturday Politics is a rough old business and it is easy to forget that for every winner there are many losers and that our opponents are but human. Take our recent triumph and Tiverton and Honiton: delighted as we remain at the victory of our own Richard Foord, it behoves us to spare a thought for his Conservative opponent. When she arrived at the count she was told by ...

Here on LDV, we have been reviewing the past of a politician who might our next prime minister. Once an ardent Lib Dem with a passion for getting rid of the monarchy, she appeared on national TV with Mark Pack and Paddy Ashdown. In today's Times, we learn more about the young Liz Truss from Neil Fawcett, a Liberal Democrat councillor who is part of Layla Moran's team in Oxfordshire. She was bloody difficult to work with... I wasn't massively surprised when she turned up as a Tory. I would not be surprised if she made a choice that she ...

No 4 Old Street has had more changes of use than many buildings in the town centre. One the edge of the primary shopping area, just off the primary pedestrian thoroughfare from Tower Street to King Street, over the last decade or so the building has been a restaurant, a bookshop, a tattoo parlour, an off license, a florist, a micro-bar and a cocktail bar. The latest proposal from Roger Bowles is to convert the property into a micro pub which plans suggest will be called the Old Street Tavern. Work on the property has been underway for some while ...

It is not many leadership contests where the candidates engage in a race to the bottom but the Tories seem to manage it every time. The latest is tne pronouncement by the Tory front-runner, Liz Truss that she plans to scrap all remaining EU regulations by the end of 2023. Now, there is no doubt this will appeal to the Tory backwoodsmen and women who make up the electorate in this particular contest, but the outcome of such a move would be especially devastating for trade between the UK and the EU and, of course, many rights we take for granted. ...

They call him "The Trump of the Tropics." The parallels between Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro and Donald Trump are legion, with one big difference – Bolsonaro is better placed to overturn his country's democracy. Presidential elections are scheduled for 2 October and far-right Bolsonaro is trailing well behind his socialist rival Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. So what does he do? He pulls a Trump. The elections will be a fraud, Bolsonaro claims months before the polls open. The electronic voting machines, he says, have been hacked. Rubbish, counters the electoral authority, who maintain that there have been no incidences ...
