It's down to the problems Asda experienced getting the design approved for its store in the centre of the Essex new town of South Woodham Ferrers, says Chris Spargo in this video. He argues that the inspiration for the style, known in the trade as 'Essex barn', came from nearby Coggeshall.

"Since Putin's illegal invasion began on 24 February 2022, at least 19,546 Ukrainian children have been forcibly taken from their families and their homeland, although the true figure is likely to be much higher because Russia frequently targets vulnerable children without anyone to speak for them."Johanna Baxter, Labour MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, says there can be no true peace in Ukraine without the return of the children Putin has abducted. Ricky Treadwell is not impress by the Liberal Democrats' Buy British campaign. Will Forster, Lib Dem MP for Woking, wants the government to recognise the work of almshouse ...
I didn't really have any plans for most of Tuesday and, if you don't have plans, Udine is a splendid place not to have them. You can just wander around, soaking in the architecture, eating and drinking as you do. And so, that's what I did, with the one proviso that I had a meeting of the National Assembly of the National Association of Local Councils to fit in. Udine in the sunshine is glorious, so a walk was called for, and up to the castle I went. Built on a thirty-metre high mound, it's pretty but not daunting, although ...
Council tax bills are now arriving in Gateshead. Like most councils, Gateshead residents will pay 5% more. Lib Dem Leader of the Opposition, Ron Beadle, explains in this video how the government is, in effect, forcing councils to increase council tax.
So, Brno (and the Czech Republic) left behind, it was time for a change of scenery, as I was heading for Italy. The obvious route is to change trains at Vienna and catch the Venice-bound Railjet there. But I've been to Vienna, and I wanted to get some bonus steps in, and so, I picked Wiener Neustadt as my connection point. The journey to Wiener Neustadt was a relatively uneventful one, and my first destination soon hove into view. Dropping off my luggage at a convenient located left luggage point, I set off to explore the charms of the town. ...
Auberon Waugh once described his Private Eye column as a new art form: "a work of pure fantasy, except that the characters in it were real." I suppose that's what I aspire to in these diaries. Bobby Dean and Roz Savage did not enjoy recording careers before they were elected to parliament last year, but their names make them sound as though they should have done. Some parts are true though. Roz really has rowed those three oceans and, of course, there is a Rutland Water Monster. Friday This office over a tobacconist's in Wardour Street may not look much, ...
As a committed Liberal Democrat, I was disappointed by our recent "Buy British" video. It sends the wrong message about who we are—and worse, it risks alienating the very voters we need to attract. In this article, I want to explain why the video undermines our liberal values, explore the political motivations I fear may lie behind it, and argue that it hurts us more than it helps. Animal welfare or economic nationalism? Our last manifesto mentions animal welfare five times. It promises an Animal Welfare Bill, a ban on selling animal products produced to lower standards than those allowed ...

Many thanks to the residents who contacted us about the alarmingly poor state of the roadway in Arnhall Gardens - see photos. We have raised this with the roads maintenance partnership, requesting repairs.
I wrote last week that Labour's decision to hike Employer's national insurance has created a huge headache for public services in Wales because the Labour government has decided that any compensation will be paid using the Barnett formula. That means that whereas public bodies in England will receive the full additional amount they need to pay in NI contributons, here in Wales we will just get 5.9% of the extra cost to the Treasury. It has been estimated that this could create a £65m shortfall, money that will have to come from health, social services or education budgets. Now, according ...
