Peter Black launches ‘A Better Learning Environment’

Gravatar    Trust in Wales Ymddiried yng Nghymru       Education spokesperson Peter Black today launched a new pre-16 education document, which will form the basis of Welsh Liberal Democrat policy for the remainder of the assembly and beyond. Mr Black said: “Giving young people the best environment to learn is key to Wales’s future, and at the moment, not every Welsh school pupil has access to the best facilities available. “The Welsh Liberal Democrats have always rejected Blair’s selection-based education reforms, and this document outlines our ideas. It puts forward 21 points for 21st century school-age education ...

Recycling progress; Community Council

Gravatar Today, had good news that the residents in Gowrie Street will be given the option next month to get brown (garden) and blue (paper) recycling bins. Also, good to get promises that the lack of a street sign on the south side of Almond Place and the very worn sign on Almond Place’s north side will be addressed - I have been promised that these will be replaced within the next 4-5 weeks. Well attended West End Community Council meeting last night where the new STV electoral arrangements were explained. Also strong support for saving the ...

Abbas, Olmert and Rice...........whither the roadmap?

Gravatar OK, so this is how I spend my Valentine's night........ just got this email, if you support the sentiments please sign the petition and pass on to others: Dear friends, It will soon be seven long and devastating years since the top Israeli, Palestinian, and international leaders sat down together to talk peace. But this week that tide could turn - on Monday, President Abbas and Prime Minister Olmert will meet briefly with US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice in Jerusalem. We cannot afford to let Monday's summit lead nowhere. This may be our best chance in ...

Is Coate Water safe?

Gravatar Steve Wakefield, a Tory councillor from Swindon, suggests that the University of Bath may be preparing to bale out of the proposed Coate Water Campus development on the outskirts of the town. Gravatar There is a substantial interview with one of this blog's heroines - Elspeth Campbell - on the Evening Standard site: "I just want him to do the best possible job he can, although my prime concern is that he stays healthy. But you know, if the polls result in a hung Parliament, he could be a significant player come the election. People are beginning to recognise that fact."

Westminster Challenge - Support Nick Clegg and Jenny Willott

Gravatar The Westminster Challenge is now well underway. Again the Lib Dems are disproportionately represented (2 out of 5 MPs) with Nick Clegg and Jenny Willott (and they always gave the impression of being so sensible!) I have to say I so admire them both, I have no doubt it will be an amazing experience, but enormously demanding, and I am quite sure my tongue would be permanently stuck to the side of the igloo by now! Both Nick and Jenny are looking for sponsorship so if you haven't already sponsored them please do so and let other ...

Footprints in the sand.. (Underneath the Lintel)

Gravatar Its always slightly worrying going to see a play starring an actor from one of your favourite TV shows in it. Especially if he is the only actor in the piece. Valentines............Yellow Roses...........and fanciable MPs

Gravatar I suppose the problem with Valentine's day without a "significant other" is that it's a bit like Christmas when you've stopped believing in Santa..........All around you are men and women of all shapes, sizes, demeanours, people you would never in your wildest dreams put in the same room as a red rose, protectively carrying their (increasingly) enormous and elaborate bouquets, scurrying purposefully to their darlings. One feels a little like a child, face pressed up against the window, watching the party without an invitation..........oh heavens, shall I go hang myself now?! But, who am I complain? I did ...

Norwich leading the way with totally "free" wi-fi

Gravatar Channel Four did an interesting piece for the news last night about free wi-fi in Norwich. Norwich is leading the way in providing wi-fi, but unlike other councils, including many Lib Dem ones, Norwich is pioneering completely free wi-fi, with no costs, hidden charges or fees. They are using a slightly slower speed Broadband so as not to be a direct competitor to super fast broadband speed wi-fi operators, but the service provided is suitable for internet browsing, e-mail, even music downloading and some video downloads. It is nice to see Norwich leading the way, and particularly good ...

Gravatar LibertyCat has read the full UNICEF child poverty report and was planning to blog about it. However, as a taster... It is for this reason that Grauniad is on debatable ground

Brave New World

Gravatar For a lot of people, today has been loaded with a lot of ritual significance. It's been a significant day for me too, but for a slightly different reason, because I found myself agreeing with Simon Heffer. The steady descent of MPs from representatives of the people and legislators to over paid social workers has long been one of my favourite hobby horses, and like Mr Heffer I believe that a review of numbers is well overdue. I don't accept his point though about a cut in the pay, though I'm sure that this would play very well to the ...

Frank Field takes Lord Bonkers' advice

Gravatar Frank Field has called on the Labour Party to pass on the opportunity of having Gordon Brown as its next leader. Writing in the Guardian this morning, he says: The question then becomes not who is owed the leadership, but who by their very presence shouts at the electorate that New Labour has already moved on to the next stage of its life. Will that be best achieved by a candidate whose hands have been on the steering wheel for the last decade? Or will it come from the younger generation, in a candidate who is not linked in ...

Richard Benyon - Petrolhead?...Shurely shome mishtake?

Gravatar From the just-published figures, I notice that Newbury MP Richard Benyon is an apparent "petrolhead", spending £2263 on car travel and only £333 on the train, even though he lives just three minutes from Theale station, which is on the mainline to Paddington. Gravatar It's odd that it should take the EU to expose what our own government have been doing. It is also a damning indictment of the way this government has sought to curb civil liberties and do anything the US wants it to do. Gravatar Gridlock is coming, is both a literal and a figurative sense, and only Douglas Alexander can save us. If that doesn't send a shiver down the spine (or perhaps send you off into peels of laughter), the alternative should cause you to break into a cold sweat. The petition to “Scrap the planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy” has now received over 1.4m signatures. travel allowances

Gravatar I'm glad to see that we now have some increased openness about our MPs travel expenses. Its interesting to see who has claimed for cycle travel. Cameron doesn't make the top 10, and surprisingly Lynne Jones doesn't either. I suspect that quite a few cycling MPs don't actually claim their mileage. In the same way, I have not received any travel expenses (see bottom of this page for allowances paid) from the city council. Claiming for 2-3 mile journeys at 20p per mile seems to have a longer admin time/cost than the actual claimed expense. And running costs of bikes ...

Not only did we have Rhodri's own statement on climate change but also a Tory motion on the same subject. This is a difficult subject for the Tories. Tories desperate for candidates in South Norfolk ?

Gravatar A friend of mine who lives in Hethersett, South Norfolk, received an interesting proposition through the door the other day from Conservative Party. They were asking him if he wanted to be a Conservative candidate in the forthcoming local elections. This came as something of a shock to him as he is neither a Tory member, a Tory voter, or for that matter someone devoid of his own ideas, which seems to be the main qualification to become part of "Dave's" pale blue vision of the future.
