Common Sense - Or Lack of it!!

Gravatar I heard a frightening statistic today, did you know that 1in 4 thats 25% of all children in London aged 10 have never been outside to play on their own. How on earth are they ever going to learn how to fend for themselves when they have never climbed a tree without mum watching or ever cycled round the block just for the sake of it. I really feel that parents like this take paranoia to the

Dear reader, I wish to pry into your sex life.

Gravatar With regard to this entry on {[info]} si_blog, specifically the claim thatDespite eyewitness accounts that the woman asked to be rained on, the State says [having a man ejaculate on one's face] must be rape because no sane, sober woman would actually consent to such a perversion.... I'd like to conduct a straw poll. Anyone with an LJ log in or open ID can vote, and see the percentages once they've voted, but the only person who will be able to see who has voted for what is me and I promise not to tell. I'm genuinely interested to find ...

Persuasive Political Langauge: not AV or Alternative Vote!

Gravatar Political success is about having both the best ideas and the means to win people over to those ideas. The means we need are more than money and super-keen people.  It’s also the right words to convey ideas attractively.  A fundamental of that is to use terms that most people understand immediately or, at least, without extended explanation.  People forget [...]

Vince is back in town

Gravatar Prepare the puns and sharp put-downs, Sam Coates of the Times is reporting that the legendary Parliamentary performer Vince Cable is to make a PMQs comeback this Wednesday, facing off against Harriet Harman in a battle to the last witticism as Brown takes a well-deserved break from fiasco Britain and attends the NATO summit.

Spring in the Air

Gravatar Today has been a lovely sunny spring day, the kind that lifts the spirits no matter what is on the agenda. The spring bulbs which we arranged to have planted as part of our small environmental improvements are looking wonderful - hosts of golden daffodils along roadsides, swathes of purple and white crocus and the green of the grass. A very visible sign of what some of the money was spent on,

Obama: empiricism of the left and the search for a narrative.

Gravatar There is an excellent article on the Democratic nomination contest in the latest edition of the London Review of Books.the meat of his analysis arrives towards the end of the article - and it goes without saying that I think there is a lesson for us in it. He contrasts the policy wonkery of Hillary - for whom all ills can be tackled by the State with Obama's very different philophy: "Obama is that exotic political animal, a left-of-centre empiricist. The great strength of his writing is his determination to incorporate into the narrative what he calls unwelcome details, and ...

It's another diet carcinogenic moment...

Gravatar I never thought I would blog about the magazine Marie Claire, but a serious article has caught my eye. Its more of an update on a situation I first read about when a teenager. Its shocked me much more several years later. It seems even bright professional women in Senegal are still bleaching their dark skins to appear lighter like Beyonce. Apparently their partners are fully supportive of the practice, which involves chemicals so fierce the skin can blister permanently when exposed to the sun. One of the ingredients is a listed carcinogen, which the government doesnt have the resources ...

No Shit Sherlock: Duke did not order Diana death

Gravatar I suppose it needed to be said for the benefit of any phoney Pharaohs out there, but: There is “not a shred of evidence” that the Duke of Edinburgh ordered Princess Diana’s death or that it was organised by MI6, the inquest has heard. Coroner Lord Justice Scott Baker said jurors could find that Diana and Dodi [...]

Laws, Rules & Regulations

Gravatar I just left my friends house where we were discussing the state of the country today (as you do), and something was said that really resonated with me and I felt was worth blogging. We were talking about the amount of red-tape and over regulation that exists today in this country for just about every aspect of our lives. This is something I’ve been reading about in an amusing, yet worrying book entitled “How to Label a Goat” by Ross Clark. (I highly recommend by the way!) Anyway, my friend  said: “The trouble with the law today is it’s like ...

Time for Africa to grow up over Zimbabwe

Gravatar Mugabe is known throughout the world as a tyrant who has destroyed a prosperous economy and cheated his way to power in successive elections. Despite this and the thousands of deaths he has caused amongst the black population of his country, he is still revered by many Africans as some sort of hero because he cocks a snoop, pulls faces and shouts at the former colonial master. Now, with Mugabe about to steal another election, isn't it about time Africa grew up The fact that the African Election Observers declared the election to be free and fair before the results ...

Promises and the election that never was.

Gravatar The moment we knew that Gordon Brown was serious about holding an election last autumn was when he made his promise about "deep-cleansing" for hosptials. You needed to be fantastically optimistic to believe this was ever going to work: MRSA is carried around on people and so the benefits were always going to fleeting at best. So it proves. The Independent reported this morning that: Thousands of patients will remain at risk from superbugs, despite a £57m "deep clean" of hundreds of hospitals, because a vital screening programme will not be put in place for at least a year. One ...

Blogging and that

Gravatar Continuing the meta-blogging mode of late where we all question our existence at the behest of the member for Hornsey and Wood Green I thought I would add my dix centimes. Firstly, I would like to point out what I think Lib Dem blogs do right: Local issues: I know, blah blah, localism, blah, blah but, although personally I don’t read them one of the best things about the Lib Dem blogosphere is that there are many councillors, AM’s and MP’s out there that are blogging for their constituents, not for you and me and Westminster.  This is an excellent ...

An Resek Hellys

Gravatar The amount of personal stuff on this blog has occasionally been commented on. Kindly folk have said it has a touch of Bridget Jones, less kindly, that's you Cowley Street, have said that Rob has grasped that no one reads these blogs, so he doesn't waste time working out clever things to say, he just tells us what he did yesterday. "Childhood Thats dead man, died a long time ago"

Gravatar Recently, I watched Ross Kemp on Gangs - Gangs of South London about the recent increase in gun crime and other gang-related activity in London where he talked to the boys (no other word for them really) in these gangs and the people in the communities trying to help. The programme (and others in the Kemp’s Gangs series) is really worth watching. However, the thing that shocked me most was that when asked the question of who was supplying the guns the answer, not only from the gangbangers but also community workers was - “The Government”.  This really astounded me.  ...

Liberal Democrats condemn uncosted promises

Gravatar Barely seven days before election nominations opened, two major projects were announced. By convention, councils avoid making contentious decisions during an election period ("purdah"). Derek Vaughan, Neath Port Talbot council leader, promised that Gwyn Hall would be rebuilt and that there would be a major reconstruction of Pontardawe town centre. Neither has a price tag. So far as we know, the council has not even been told of the cost of the artist's impression of the Gwyn Hall rebuild. We believe that it is wrong to insult voters' intelligence by holding out the possibility of these projects with no guarantee ...

Senator Obama is advised by David Axelrod: ". . . an advertising guy . . . who perfected the craft of encapsulating an entire life in 30 seconds, he has a gift for telling personal stories in ways that people can understand. Zimbabwe delays suggest Mugabe and Zanu PF are up to no good

Johann Hari is right-ish

Gravatar A good article by Johann Hari in The Independent today, outlining why electoral reform is needed, but highlighting why AV would not be the solution. Although the article doesn't mention STV as one possible solution, Hari's preferred option is the AV+ system recommended by Roy Jenkins. While far from perfect, this would certainly be a lot preferable to pure AV.

Remembering AV-Plus

Gravatar Its been a long time since we've seen a newspaper column advocating the merits of AV-Plus.  AV-Plus is the hybrid PR system devised by Roy Jenkins as part of his ill-fated review of the electoral system in 1998.  Electoral reform made several appearances in the papers last week - but none gave much attention to the system that Jenkins thought best suited to the UK.Johann Hari sets the record straight in today's Independent ('We need proportional representation. But what's on offer will just make matters worse') Hari is a well-known advocate of electoral reform - and the fact that he ...

Lib Dems condemn Labour hypocrisy over Post Offices

Gravatar Posted by Chris: On Thursday 3 April Liberal Democrats will use a motion to Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council to express dismay at the failure of local MPs to support local post offices. Four post offices in the borough are under threat as part of the Labour Governments closure programme, in Redcar (Park Avenue), Lazenby, Moorsholm and Charltons. The Boroughs two Labour MPs, Vera Baird and Ashok Kumar, could have voted against the closures in Parliament on 19 March, but chose instead to back the Governments closure of 2500 post offices nationally. Gravatar As if by some magical force, Mother Nature has once again shown that shes a Lib Dem voter by turning the sky blue as the campaign kicks off properly.   Last year, all of April was bathed in sunshine as we spent countless hours outside leafleting and canvassing. Recently the weather has been a bit touch-and-go, with bucketfuls of rain pelting me at alarmingly frequent intervals. Gravatar You can imagine that it was with some interest that I read todays Guardian article entitled "Crisis Lords meetings over sleaze allegations". A special meeting has been called of the Lords Privileges Committee, which is the equivalent of the standards commissioner for the Commons, to look at a whole series of allegations around cash for access, use of banqueting facilities and failure to declare interests. Gravatar Celebration reception Wednesday 2nd April, 7.30pm, National Liberal Club The Torrington by-election in March 1958 was the first gain by the Liberal party in Britain at a by-election since 1929. The election of Mark Bonham Carter provided a major boost to Liberal fortunes at the time. For the Liberal Party it was a short lived victory - Mark was defeated eighteen months later in the 1959 general election and didn't re-take the seat in 1964, but Torrington proved to be the first Liberal success in the long revival that continued in the 1962 Orpington by-election. Tsvangirai to offer Mugabe amnesty

Gravatar Tracy McVeigh in the Observer has a video interview with Zimbabwean Presidential challenger Morgan Tsvangirai. He confidently announces that he expects to win the election, but interestingly, he also appears to offer Robert Mugabe immunity from repercussions if there's a change in government. This quotation is taken from about two minutes in on the video: If Mugabe would accept the result peacefully and say 'Look thank you very much, I accept the result', I think a lot of people would find it very hard to pursue the man through the deep holes and all these hidden places. Wendy the turkey threatens to vote for early Christmas

Gravatar I see that Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander is making noises about putting forward a motion of no confidence in the Gnat administration's local income tax policy. The trouble is that this is just empty posturing. Alexander knows it's quite likely that if a new election to the Scottish Parliament was held any time soon, it would almost certainly mean the Gnats increasing their tally and Labour going even further backwards. I also suspect the Lib Dems would improve a bit, while the Tories would probably stay roughly where they are. If Wendy Alexander really believes that her leadership of ...

Gravatar Thursday: Heathrow, and CHAOS descends on the opening day of shiny new Terminal Five, with "technical glitches" leaving passengers unable to get to planes and baggage unable to get anywhere!
