Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, the leader of the Lib-Dems on Broxtowe Borough Council. May I give a special welcome to the new readers that we have this week. 1. Tram WorksIt appears that the seemingly never ending tram works in Beeston are getting to an end. The plan now is that Chilwell Road up to the bed shop will open on May 26, from the bed shop to the Hop Pole will open by June 30 and the whole of Chilwell Road should be open by August 4th. ...

An email arrives from the number 2 candidate on the Liberal Democrats' list for the East Midlands Euro constituency: Just to inform you that whilst out delivering Euro-leaflets today in the Forest Fields area of Nottingham, a few of the glossy pages fell to the floor and my foot accidentally stepped onto them. I then slipped and fell with the full weight of my body falling onto my left ankle. The result is that I fell and broke my bone in two places above my ankle!Get well soon, Issan. In the mean time, readers may care to remember one of ...

An enjoyable evening at the winter gardens for those of us, still capable of free thought as Nigel Farage held a rally for those of us who have had enough b******* from the european union. A bit surprised by the miserable turnout of protesters, particularly given the encouragement from Broadstairs red hall revolutionaries to be in position by 4 o'clock, still maybe these characters are beginning to understand how democracy works, people present a case you accept or question end of story. Anyway I doubt if anyone was disappointed, speeches lasted about as long as needed, Rodger Latchford opened precedings, ...

The Labour Party have made many claims about how much money is being cut from Birmingham's budgets. They are doing this to justify their prioritisation of cutting the green waste collection. It happens to be that Solihull spends in total around £700 per annum less per dwelling, but still provides a free green waste service (one bin - they charge for a second bin) However, these are the figures

Penwith Pioneer Project

Penwith Pioneer project is an exciting local Health and Social Care project. It is bringing together voluntary and statutory organisations to start a revolution in how we provide health care services. Their starting point is all of us who want to live well and safe, in our own homes. The project aims to break down all the separate teams and services that provide a bit of this and a bit of that and talk of 'the patient' to create a flexible service, with no rule book or barriers and remembers we are all people! Those taking part in the pilot ...

Labour won't scrap NPPF

The Labour Party has said it will not reform the Coalition Government's National Planning Policy Framework rules. Mm, this certainly makes some big speeches on Sefton Council from Labour members look a little out of touch with their own Party does it not! Labour have become the party that opposes everything the Coalition Government does but then says it will not change anything! Keeping the economic policies, keeping the planning policies, keeping pretty much everything, or so it seems, except of course for the odd lick of paint over a policy here and there to try to make it look ...

[IMG: "Demsbury" - Bekonscot Model Village and Railway - London - Some rights reserved by bortescristian] "As you all know," Melissa said in a rather officious voice, "Maxwell Tarmac-Smyth has resigned with some haste and we have a by-election on our hands." We were clustered in the back room of the Market Tavern at a hastily convened meeting of our local campaign committee. Melissa had been my campaign manager for the 2013 election and had called the meeting as soon as the news of the by-election reached Demsbury. Before she could continue with her introduction, Bess, known to all by ...

[IMG: Clegg on tv camera Some rights reserved by Liberal Democrats] Nick Clegg takes to the comment pages of the Telegraph today to make the case for Coalition, first taking a swipe at critics on both Left and Right: For the Left, the very act of coalition is condemned as heinous moral treachery; for the Right, the Lib Dems have far too much clout, thus frustrating the birthright of the Conservative Party to do what it wishes. Unprincipled powerlessness on the one hand, ruthless power-play on the other. Both can't be right. In my view, both are utterly wrong. He ...

Good call After a couple of years of disaster followed by catastrophe, Cllr Clive Hart has at last done us all a favour, by resigning . Iris Johnson the newly elected Thanet council leader has already proved her superior skill and judgement by saying goodbye to Michelle Fenner and Alan Poole, if anyone has seen this couple of councillors in action they will understand the benefits. From the Mail website this morning (and presumably in today's newspaper): I asked about Romanians, he talked about people-traffickers. I asked about Germans, he talked about easily identifiable 'difference'. I have no explanation for this save a conviction on Farage's part that one's country of origin or ethnicity determines one's values and decency. When we moved on to the question of his finances, events took an even stranger turn. Asked why he had reverse - ferreted on a pledge to publish his personal accounts, I offered him the transparency agreement employed by every Labour MEP in the European Parliament. He ...

Housing matters!

Labour-run Haringey Council has not built any council housing for 25 years. Unforgivable! So much of my casework is to do with housing. There isn't nearly enough and people stay on Haringey's housing list for years - living in overcrowded and sometimes absolutely terrible conditions. It is not unusual for people to come to me in desperation over their living conditions to ask me to help get them moved. So often it is the parents worried about the children having to sleep several to a room and no place for a child to do homework or study – and years ...

There has been an increasing trend amongst local councils to require care workers to spend no more than 15 minutes with clients. Fifteen minutes is simply not long enough to respond properly to the needs of those receiving care. First and foremost people want to be treated like human beings. Fifteen minutes is hardly enough time to help get someone out of bed and dressed. Care visits lasting less than a quarter of an hour not only let down patients, but they also let down care workers who can't offer the full support they would like to. It is something ...

Because 26th May is a Bank Holiday, the bin collections are put back a day. So, for example if your usual collection day is a Tuesday, that week it'll be a Wednesday. I'm sure you get the drift. That week is a Green bin week, ie non-recyclable waste.

[IMG: Papers - Some rights reserved by NS Mewsflash] Here are a few of my favourite articles from the Sunday papers to challenge, infuriate and inform. First of all, the Scotsman reports that support for independence has fallen in the last four months, with barely a third of those now in favour. Women's support for leaving the UK is also dropping like a stone, down 8 points in a month. No room for complacency, though. The polls are generally all over the place and every vote needs to be fought for. The Sunday Times (£) previews a report from the ...

The various controveries over UKIP have had the effect of pushing Labour's own troubles off the front pages in recent weeks, but that does not stop today's Observer highlighting the latest spat in the party's internal war. The paper reports that senior Labour figures have warned that their party risks losing the general election because of Ed Miliband's ''suicidal'' campaign tactics of "continually reciting a mantra of misery": One prominent backbencher Simon Mr Danczuk, the MP for Rochdale, said they had to stop relying on the unpopularity of the Government and come forward with a positive vision of their own. ...

Electric Eden introduces us to John Renbourn: Born in London in 1944, he was encouraged to explore the medieval and Elizabethan lute tradition by his classical guitar teacher. He was drawn, by way of skiffle, to the American blues picking of Elizabeth Cotten, Brownie McGhee and Ramblin' Jack Elliott while studying at Kingston College of Art, which at that moment was a breeding ground for as many upcoming musicians as artists - undergraduates included Eric Clapton, Sandy Denny and members of The Yardbirds.Renbourn's beatnik credentials were as impeccable as his art-school grounding: in the early 1960s he lived in a ...

The Welsh Government's acknowledgement of the importance of promoting Welsh as a second language is welcome. At last it is being recognised that improvements are "overdue". To date, the Welsh Labour Government's commitment to our language has been luke-warm to say the least, and it is important that their revised plans are closely monitored and have clear timescales attached. If we want our language to grow and thrive then we need to be promoting it as strongly as possible, and schools have a major role to play. Consideration of Welsh as a second language needs to go hand-in-hand with an ...
