The disgraced and suspended Labour MP for Sheffield Hallam, Jared O'Mara, has been in the firing line again over how little constituency or Parliamentary work he is doing. As the local paper reports: O'Mara, who took Nick Clegg's seat in Sheffield Hallam in June, was suspended by Labour in October after a series of homophobic, racist and misogynistic online remarks made several years ago came to light. In December, O'Mara's office said he would not be attending Parliament on medical advice but added that he was continuing to work "very hard" for constituents in Sheffield. But after The Yorkshire Post ...

Mark Gatiss, says the blurb on the British Film Institute YouTube channel, talks to the Radio Times's Alison Graham about growing up with ghost stories, revamping Baker Street for a new generation and how his obsession with the grotesque is really just a love for humanity in all its wonky forms.

Six of the Best 760

Peter Wrigley asks some pointed questions on the collapse of Carillion. "Families who have never worked a day in their lives having 4 or 5 kids and the rest of us having 1 or 2 means it's not long before we're drowning in a vast sea of unemployed wasters that we pay to keep!" Alex Spence introduces us to Ben Bradley, the new Conservative MP for Mansfield. Mark Little welcomes the end of news in the Facebook news feed. Gavin Stamp, architectural historian and campaigner died at the end of 2017. Here, in an article published in July, he discusses ...

I am neither an accountant nor a lawyer - just a jobbing teacher of economics - so these questions may appear naive, but I haven't as yet seen them answered adequately in the media reports so far. 1. What is the involvement of the accountancy firms (PriceWeaterhouseCooper or whoever was responsible)? Somebody presumably audited the annual accounts and should have been able to give ample warning that the conglomerate was heading for insolvency if it continued to trade in its current fashion. 2. Why is the ousted chief executive to continue to receive his £660 000 annual salary until the ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: Brawne Lamia is tired and aching and very irritable. The sound of Sol Weintraub's baby crying sets her teeth on edge. She knows the others are also tired; none has slept more than a few hours in the past three nights, and the day just ending has been filled with tension and unresolved terrors. She sets the last piece of wood on the fire. This won the 1991 BSFA Award for best Novel, beating Eternal Light by Paul J. If Trump Towers is anything to go by no wonder the man lives an alternative existence to the rest of us. Gold, gold everywhere and not a drop of substance. It's huge, imposing, gilded and FALSE. I couldn't visit the tower without making my own personal stand. I had just bought 'Fire and Fury' from Barnes & Noble and I decided to take out the copy and be photographed with it all over the Tower. The photograph above is my two-finger equivalent salute to Trump and Pence whom I think are odious men. Although Trump's election was beyond alarming it ...

Living In A Library

If you could spend the rest of your free time in one place, where would it be? For me, it would be a library. Libraries are the places where I feel honestly at peace. The larger the library, the better. There is no better place to be than where the whispers of human knowledge are stored. I sit in the Reading Room at Liverpool Central Library, and I feel at home. I feel giddy like a small child staring at his massive pile of presents on Christmas Day, looking at the curved walls covered in shelves of bound knowledge from ...

So it appears that rather that following the Norwegian model of living with the EU Theresa May's vision for what Brexit means looks like it is endangering it. Norwegian officials have warned Brussels that they are watching negotiations over Brexit closely. If a special deal is reached with the UK this will lead to Norway looking at renegotiating the terms under which it operates with the EU. The fact that May's government wants out of the Customs Union and out of the Single Market while still maintaining favourable conditions of trade and access with the EU is not looking good ...

In the previous three posts in this series, I examined the Brexit legislative process, prospects for the EU negotiations, and the state of public opinion and Labour on Brexit. Lastly, what are the prospects for a referendum on the terms of any deal and an early General Election stemming from the ongoing Brexit crisis? Nigel Farage recently toyed with the possibility of a 'second' referendum. Whilst ostensibly suggesting it might settle the Brexit debate for a generation, his real motivation is to have a referendum before the poor withdrawal deal being negotiated becomes obvious to a substantial majority of voters, ...

At the start of this year Bury Council closed 10 out of the 14 libraries across the borough, and slashed the opening times of the four that are left. Now community group, charities and schools are all eligible to select items which are no longer required by the library service. Those who are part of an eligible group can arrange to pick books, audio-visual items and furniture from buildings that are closing. People wishing to take advantage of the surplus books should email library.suggestions@bury.gov.uk to make an appointment.

NHS Bury Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is working with Bury Cancer Support Centre, Macmillan Cancer Support and a number of local organisations to launch a new service on 3rd January 2018 for those who have been affected by cancer. Recent figures suggest there are over 1,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed every year in Bury. In 2010 there were over 5,000 people living in Bury up to 20 years after a cancer diagnosis. Many of these people are living with unmet non-clinical needs, and this figure is estimated to rise to 10,800 by 2030. The Bury Multi-agency Cancer Service offers ...

The other day I was asked by friends Brian Keoghan and Chris Reilly what my favourite song/tune of all time is. I found it hard to answer at the time as there are so many great songs that I like but after some consideration I am plumping for Isaac Hayes live version of 'Your love is so doggone good' written by Difosco Ervin & Rudy Love. The version I refer to is the one from Isaac's set at Wattstax in 1972. There's a studio version of it on his Black Moses double album of 1971 but I like the raw ...

One of the problems we face in trying to live more sustainably is that when managing waste we are starting too far down the hierarchy. Effectively there are a number of ways to reduce the amount of stuff we send to landfill and conserve resources which would otherwise be diverted into cosmetic packaging. At the top of that hierarchy is the need to prevent the waste in the first place by finding other ways of doing things. Below that is minimisation, reuse, recycling, energy recovery and disposal. Most government initiatives focus on getting people to recycle their waste, whilst the ...
