Our islands are blessed with some of the world's most beautiful cathedrals. They are an ensemble of every architectural style from the Romanesque through to the current century. Some have been places of Christian worship for 1500 years, while others were founded in the last 100 years as different denominations established or, in the case [...]

The City of York Council is run by a Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition. This week the leader of the council, David Carr, was ousted as leader of the Conservative Group. He has been succeeded as group leader by Ian Gillies, though he is not yet the leader of the council as it is subject to a vote at full council. York's daily paper The Press says Ian Gillies will: review the case of two Lib Dem councillors who were suspended from City of York Council's executive by David Carr. Cllr Ian Gillies, the new Conservative leader who is set ...

At a recent Southwark Council Audit, Governance and Standards Committee we heard what external auditors had found during various audits including one on IT Network Security. For the first time ever in my 10 year of chairing or vice charing these committees we heard that an area of the council had "No Assurance". This means the area is in a complete pickle and no confidence it will get sorted out any time soon. Please see page 45 of the agenda pack: The area is IT Network Security. The key findings stated were: The council has deployed and is using ...

Next Tuesday the UK will commemorate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the vote and we will be marking the contribution of the commitment of suffragettes and suffragists over years to achieve it. I am sure, however, that many of them would be very concerned about the fault lines in our democracy one hundred years on. The democratic deficit in our country is stark. First past the post denies representation to millions: in the 2015 General Election, the Lib Dems, Greens, and UKIP got over 24% of the vote, but won a mere ...

Vince Cable has written for Politics Home about what the Lib Dem peers hope to achieve with the EU Withdrawal Bill: He summarises where we are. As public opinion turns against Brexit, Labour just wants to make it more extreme: This is why Jeremy Corbyn's announcement this weekend that the "ship has sailed" on staying in the EU is so bizarre. At best, this shows he does not have the stomach for the fight; at worst, it reveals what many of us have long suspected given his decades of Parliamentary opposition to the EU - that he wanted out all ...

As you might expect, Ros has been keeping busy since standing down as Chair of the House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Energy and Environment, and as part of that, served on an ad-hoc Committee on Charities, chaired by Baroness Pitkeathley. Whilst the charitable sector responded almost immediately to the findings of the report, the Government was rather slower to come up with a reply, leading to a lengthy delay in debating the subject. Ros was keen to take the opportunity to talk about some of the things happening here in Suffolk... My Lords, I start by drawing the attention ...

Crimes motivated by prejudice such as homophobia and racism already carry stiffer penalties, so if we accept that principle, why on earth do we not include misogyny in that? Jo Swinson this week made that very point using some colourful language on the Victoria Derbyshire show. When an MP swears on live TV. "There's a big difference between saying 'can I buy you a drink?' and saying 'do you want some c**k?'"@LibDems' @JoSwinson says crimes motivated by misogyny must be considered a hate crime. You can't be truly free if you are constantly fighting illness without the support that you need. That is why Liberal Democrats are so passionate about making sure that people have the right mental health support. For five years during the coalition years, Liberal Democrat ministers were at the helm of pushing through positive change. Norman Lamb, as the Minister responsible, totally got it. Of the many things he did, the Crisis Care Concordat was a really good example of helping people when they most needed it . He also fought for parity of esteem between physical and mental health. ...

Imagine spending your 17th birthday awaiting trial in an Israeli military court where 99.74% of those tried are convicted. This is the case with Ahed Tamimi who celebrates her 17th birthday today from an Israeli prison for protesting Israeli expansion near her village. Ahed Tamimi is an extremely brave young girl who has been thrown into an Israeli jail because she stood up to Israeli soldiers. On 19th December 2017 she was arrested after throwing stones at the soldiers during a protest against Trump's decision to name Jerusalem the capital of Israel. With the exception of the Guardian, most of the national media appear to have ignored this story, but the ruling on Tuesday by the Court of Appeal that the government's mass digital surveillance regime is unlawful is highly significant. As reported on the Silicon website, this ruling is a major setback for the Government surveillance scheme, which had faced stiff opposition before it written into law in June 2016. It follows on from a ruling by the European court of justice in December 2016, which deemed Britain's data surveillance laws illegal. The court then, condemned the legislation for allowing the ...

I have posted previously about the state of the road surface in Millbank Lane. My last relevant posting is available via the link below:- Without rehearsing too much the history of this lane and how land owners have some significant responsibility for the maintenance of the road surface the situation seems to be like this. Because the lane is a public right of way Sefton Council does have some responsibility for the surface to be in reasonable condition for pedestrians. The responsibility for the lane being suitable for vehicles is definitely with the land owners of this unadopted road. ...

Speaking ahead of the Scottish Parliament debate on the Budget, Willie Rennie set out the Liberal Democrat priorities of investment in education and mental health. The SNP Finance Minister has not made good on a promise to provide funding for inter-island ferries in the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland. The Budget needs to do more to meet the long term needs of the economy. It should invest in people through education and mental health. We have a fully costed plan to make that happen. We have yet to hear how the SNP are going to change the Budget to ...

Commenting on a court ruling yesterday which has found the government's mass digital surveillance regime unlawful, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson Ed Davey said: "The UK's surveillance regime has once again been declared unlawful. The Government cannot simply tinker around the edges and hope for a different result. What we need is a full overhaul of the system that puts our freedoms and civil liberties at its very core."Liberal Democrats believe we can be safe and secure by ensuring surveillance is targeted and suspicion-led. What we need is for our police and intelligence services to be given the resources and ...
