"The new Southern and Thameslink trains ... look as if they have been designed to be hosed down after use." However you organise the railways the Treasury always wins, argues David Boyle. Elizabeth Ammon explains how scoring cricket games during the miners' strike made her political: "I saw a portly offspinner break down in tears when asked for his match subscription. He didn't have it. He couldn't scrape together the five pounds he was being asked for. It made me angry." Donald Trump's wall would do great damage to life and landscape along the Rio Grande, says Nick Paumgarten. A ...

Southport Liberal Democrats have just selected John Wright to be their next Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC) in the seat formerly held by John Pugh. A former teacher and college Principal, John Wright lives in nearby Croston and has campaigned in Southport with the Liberal Democrats for many years. He has also been a councillor in Preston and stood in South Ribble at last year's election. Speaking after his selection, he said, It was a bitter blow to lose Southport in 2017. However, my selection marks the start of the fight to take back the seat, and we are campaigning hard ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: The journey was very long and we had to travel for two days and nights. Sister Firmina, who acted as the boarders' 'mother', had told us to be good girls and not give any trouble to our dear Uncle Hermann, Papa's youngest brother, who still lived with Grandmother and who would take us from Vienna to Uj-Moldova. Papa would take us as far as Vienna. I got this several years ago because I thought it was about the state of Moldova, which I know and love; but in fact it is a post-Habsburg memoir by ...

We all remember Boris's epitaph on the side of the Out-campaign bus saying "Let's fund our NHS instead". This related to the £350 million a week that we supposedly pay to the Europe Union (the net figure was of course significantly less). The question is, is the NHS going to be worse off because of Brexit? Currently, we don't know how the negotiations are going to end. The government talks about leaving without a deal suggests that they can start trading with the EU on World Trade Organisation tariffs or the complicated agreement implied by May's Florence speech. With no ...

Following a concern I saw on the Maghull Community Facebook Page I thought that asking Merseytravel to shine some light on the matter may assist. I'm not at all sure that it does though. Here's the explanation which is associated with the opening of Maghull's 2nd railway station (Maghull North) on 16th June and some increases in ticket prices which seem to be related...... ***** There will be a percentage price increase for season ticket customers travelling from Maghull (inside Merseyside/Merseytravel zones to stations in Lancashire and from Lancashire to Maghull, all other ticket prices such as single and return ...

Another former Lib Dem seat has selected a candidate for the next General Election. Getting a candidate in place early on to lead campaigning boosts our chances. Members in Yeovil, formerly held by Paddy Ashdown and David Laws between 1983 and 2015, have selected Mick Clark to fight the seat. Like Paddy, he has a record in the forces: From the Chard and Ilminster Times: Born and bred in Yeovil, Mick served in the Royal Air Force and NHS. He said: "I cannot wait to get started. "I'm looking forward to meeting local residents across the constituency in the coming ...

'I felt like dirt': disabled Canadian woman told to leave UK after 44 years To nobody's surprise, the Windrush scandal goes wider than Windrush people How Amber Rudd let 'heartbreaking' Windrush suffering drag on "One victim who wasted years of her life trying to work out why officials were telling her she was an illegal immigrant - after more than 50 years in the country and decades paying taxes while working for her local council - said the pledges were reminiscent of those made after the Grenfell Tower fire. "The government is making promises which then get forgotten once the ...

There's a nasty little clause in the Data Protection Bill soon to be finalised by Parliament which means that the Home Office is under no obligation to tell people why they've made their decisions. The Home Office has a fairly consistent record of showing that it needs much more accountability rather than less. In an article for Politics Home, Ed Davey sets out the issues: This "immigration exemption" clause would allow the Home Office to cover up its mistakes - indeed, not even find out when it had made a mistake. Because the applicant to the Home Office - or ...

In a report published today, the influential Commons Public Accounts Committee slams the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's approach to Brexit. The Chair, Meg Hillier, had this to say. The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy appears to be operating in a parallel universe where urgency is an abstract concept with no bearing on the Brexit process. The Department is responsible for around a fifth of the work streams the Government must complete as the UK leaves the EU. It is an extremely important, challenging and time-sensitive workload. Yet the Department told us it had not re-prioritised ...

I was in Port Sunlight on the Wirral a couple of weeks ago. On its nearest high street in Bebington, one in two shops were shuttered up. I have also been to Eccles and several other centres in a similar state of collapse. Those experiences have brought home to me how lucky we are to have a thriving town centre in Ludlow. But sometimes the needs of residents are hard to reconcile with town centre life. Back in 2015, one resident attacked the scale of the May Fair. Before that, there were suggestions that the event should be moved to ...

Manchester Liberal Democrats have launched their local elections manifesto. Details of their policies on subjects like homelessness, housiing, refugees and schools follow. The Liberal Democrats hope to make gains on the Labour-suffocated Council. Labour currently has 95/96 seats. The 96th is held by our own indefatigable John Leech, who was MP for Manchester Withington until 2015. There are all-up elections next Thursday. John said of the manifesto: Our campaign is about everyone and everything that makes Manchester the great city it is today; a strong local community, a celebration of diversity and non-conformity. Liberal Democrats care passionately about our local communities ...

Ah, how we long for the certainty of the Leave campaign that Brexit would see an extra £350m a week for the health service. Why didn't they warn us that the whole process would be such a mess we would actually be exporting nurses leaving health care on the brink of collapse in some areas? As the Independent reports, government's handling of our exit strategy has caused 10 per cent of the NHS European nurse workforce to quit last year, meaning attempts to increase the nursing workforce have failed for the second year running. They say that official figures from ...

I have commented before about the narrow and completely inadequate cycle/footpath out of Maghull towards Switch Island and it seems someone has been listening as construction work on a much wider path has been taking place in recent weeks from Switch Island up to the pedestrian/cycle crossing just before the Maghull boundary. I do hope that the highway powers that be Highways England and Sefton Council are going to keep the new path construction going to the junction with Liverpool Road South as there's no point in stopping at the cycle/pedestrian crossing. This is view from the crossing towards the ...

How long does it take for the body to clear a virus? Well, it depends. Some are fatal. Some clear quickly with no particular lasting effects. Others clear only after they have damaged or destroyed some organs – organs that will never fully work again and may need replacement through transplant. Others debilitate the body [...] The post Why was Ukip like a virus? appeared first on Radix.

So I see that this evening in Portadown a hall was full with people apparently to raise concern about the impact on the life of the owners of Ashers ahead of the Supreme Court ruling on this case. This I will keep short and sweet. Have any of the 100s who were gathered ever taken a stand for any member of their church community who has come out as LGB or T? I know I am not the only Christian in Northern Ireland who has been condemned by their own church for their so called "lifestyle" and yes that was ...
