Remembering George Dunk

It was perhaps fitting that the news of George Dunk's death came through while we European Liberal Democrats (ALDE, previously ELDR) were gathering for tomorrow's Council meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria, as George devoted so much of his time and energy to causes European. A former Chair of the Liberal Democrat European Group (LDEG), he was [...]

The Architect-Walker: A Mis-Guide Wrights & Sights Triarchy Press, 2018, £20 Formed in 1997, Wrights & Sites is a group artist-researchers, including Phil Smith who once wrote a guest post for this blog, whose work looks at people's relationships to places and landscapes. The Architect-Walker: A Mis-Guide is their manifesto for changing the world through exploring it. They describe it as "a tool for playful debate, collaboration, intervention and spatial meaning-making" and "an invitation to engage". Here are some of their suggested activities: Create top-secret bases with no agenda in obscure rural sites. Surround them with barbed wire to incentivise ...

Readers who follow me on Twitter will know that I often tweet pictures with the caption "Exciting times at Leicester station". Sometimes this is an ironic comment on run-of-the mill freight workings, but sometimes the pictures really are exciting to rail enthusiasts of a certain age. That is because there is a depot to the immediate north of Leicester station that now belongs to UK Rail Leasing: UK Rail Leasing own, maintain and lease out freight locomotives, with the core of our operations being the leasing of our fleet of Class 56 locomotives. Our main business is long-term leasing, but ...

From the end of May, ambulances and paramedics will no longer work out of Ludlow. We don't have a formal ambulance station here but staff are based at Ludlow Community Hospital between call-outs. Even then, only 28% of top priority calls get a 999 team arriving within eight minutes in the SY7 area. The response time is 18 minutes on average. Sometimes it takes an hour. Quick response times are crucial in saving lives and preserving the quality of life. Several minutes will be added to response times when the 999 crews move to Craven Arms. For several years, ambulances ...

Only brief notes here - been rather busy. 6) "The Secret Life of Bots," by Suzanne Palmer Second pargraph of third section: The pest also appeared to have a taste for the insulation on comm cables and other not normally edible parts of the ship.Sorry, this fails my "I hate cute robots" test. The heroic robot carries a disabled older robot around with him on his quest before saving the day by being cute. It's not you, author, it's me; don't worry. 5) "A Series of Steaks," by Vina Jie-Min Prasad Second pargraph of third section: It's not expulsion if ...

To be fair, I don't watch horror films. In fact I rarely watch anything more upsetting than Fraulein Maria going back to the abbey in The Sound of Music. However, Donald Trump's visit to the UK on July 13th is pretty horrific, more because it seems like a rather desperate attempt to pretend that we are going to be relevant as a country once we're in not very splendid post Brexit isolation. We should not be pandering to someone who uses his keyboard to lambast people from marginalised groups on Twitter and, worse, his pen to sign executive orders which ...

I have nothing but sympathy for Alfie Evans' parents. For the last 18 months, they have been going through the worst kind of trauma. Before Alfie was born, they would have had ideas of the sorts of things they would have done as a family, none of which have come to pass. None of them ever had any hope of coming to pass. It's even more difficult when nobody can actually tell you what is wrong. Whatever happened to Alfie's brain is unique. It doesn't have a name. The doctors couldn't say "He has this disease and in all these ...

Just when you thought that the Prime Minister had ruled out the UK being part of a single market after Brexit when along comes the Home Secretary to contradict her. To be precise, all Amber Rudd is saying is that the government is yet to arrive at a "final position" on whether the UK will be in a customs union with the EU after Brexit. But that does make us wonder whether her and Theresa May are attending the same cabinet meetings or not? As the Independent says, the Home Secretary's admission is likely to enrage Conservative Brexiteers, including cabinet ...

Don't forget you only have until 30th April to have your say on South Gloucestershire Council's new Local Plan at www.southglos.gov.uk/newlocalplanfeb2018. It is enshrined in the First Amendment of the US constitution. It has been British Common law since 1688. It is a key element in the 1953 European Convention of Human Rights and the 2009 Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. It is Article Two of France's Declaration of the Rights of Man and Part of the UN Charter. Freedom of the press and freedom of speech is—allegedly—chiselled in stone in almost every constitution in the world with the exceptions of self-recognised authoritarian states such as China, North Korea, Cuba and Saudi Arabia. But according to the 2018 ...

If you have ever used the signposted section of the TransPennine Trail from the Cheshire Lines Path in Maghull (just south of the access at Meadway) towards Chapel Lane in Netherton and the new Brooms Cross Road you will know what poor condition the surface is in through Jubilee Woods and across the River Alt. Here's some photos:- This path/cyclepath is Numbered 62 on the National Cycle Network and I have taken the poor condition of it up with Sefton Council who are responsible for the Trail throughout its journey through the Borough. I read the story in this week's Aintree and Maghull Champion whilst doing a fair of scratching my head because it just seemed so odd. The article talked about Maghull's Neighbourhood Plan as being 'launched' and for all the world the article read as though the process of compiling the plan has been completed. BUT, like all other Neighbourhood Plans, it needs to go before a Planning Inspector and be subject to a referendum of Maghull's electors before it's a done deal, yet nothing of this was mentioned. Now don't get me wrong the newspaper could not possibly know all ...

Now is the time to have your say on Ludlow's future. Ludlow Town Council is leading work on a community led plan for the town and its environs. The idea is to involve the whole community so that becomes our perspective on Ludlow's future, not just the council's view. A questionnaire is being delivered to every home in Ludlow. You can also complete the questionnaire online. This is way to take part if you live outside the Ludlow council area, for example in Rocks Green or Ludford. Online responses will also save time for the volunteers working on the plan. ...

Commenting on the launch of the joint campaign by the English Football League and Football Supporters' Federation calling on fans of EFL Clubs to 'Stand up for Choice' on the issue of licensed standing areas at stadiums Liberal Democrat Peer Don Foster said: "I am delighted to see the EFL and FSF call for clubs to have the right to introduce safe standing at their grounds if they want to. Liberal Democrats are committed to changing the law to introduce this right, and I introduced a Bill in parliament in 2010 that would have made this possible. "Safe standing is ...
