www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-44793164 The BBC has the story on its web site – see link above Since the election of a Liverpool City Region Mayor in 2017 there's been talk about whether Liverpool City needs an elected Mayor as well. You could say that the City now has 3 Mayors, 2 directly elected and 1 ceremonial, that's one too many for some folk and it's the City's elected Mayoral post that is being put froward for abolition to help save money for the cash strapped council. Can't say that I have ever supported any elected Mayor anywhere, in my view these posts ...

Six of the Best 804

The death of local democracy is the national calamity we don't hear about, says John Harris. Jurgen Habermas, the eminent German sociologist and philosopher, discusses the future of Europe: "Today, national populations are overwhelmed by the politically uncontrollable functional imperatives of a global capitalism that is being driven by unregulated financial markets. The frightened retreat behind national borders cannot be the correct response to that challenge." "My first London Pride, meant to be an inclusive event, was being hijacked by people telling me I shouldn't be there. I chair one of the main LGBT charities, and I was being made ...

Dominic Raab is a staunch Leave MP representing a constituency which voted strongly to Remain. He was elevated to the Cabinet after David Davies' resignation presumably because Theresa May was doing everything she could do to avoid giving the job to Michael Gove. He and the Prime Minister crossed swords before, back in 2011, when he referred to feminist ideas as "obnoxious bigotry" If you want to learn more about him, he actually wrote on this site back in 2015. The comments tell you a bit more about why. Later that year, during the election campaign, Tim Farron said he ...

Congratulations to George Butcher, selected by Liberal Democrats in Stroud as the party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC). As he describes himself on his website: I am one of two Liberal Democrat councillors for Wotton-under-Edge, North Nibley and Stinchcombe, proud to be continuing 30 years of hard work. I currently sit on Stroud District Council's Community Services and Licensing and constitution committees. It's easy to say I am happy to be part of the #LibDemfightback. Good to see that, like Vince Cable, George Butcher is a keen believer in the importance of further education (FE): The more people talking about improving ...

Second paragraph of third chapter: What makes a cold planet? To create an ice age the first thing you need is continents at the poles. Geologists have run simple climate models to demonstrate this idea, showing that if you put all the continents around the Equator - the so-called tropical ring world - the temperature gradient between the poles and the Equator is about 30°C (54°F). This is due to a trick of both the atmosphere and the oceans. The fundamental rule of climate is that hot air rises and cold air drops; this is why in the tropics the ...

Global Disability Summit

People with disabilities account for 1 billion of the world's population. Too often they are among the most marginalised and discriminated against groups - and too often international development efforts have continued to leave them behind. The upcoming Global Disability Summit, held in London on 24th July, is a chance to change this by building on the work of Liberal Democrats in government to promote disability-inclusive development. The Summit, hosted by DFID, the government of Kenya, and the International Disability Alliance will be the first of its kind with attendees from governments and NGOs from across the world. A liberal ...

Yesterday's match occupied almost precisely the time it took me to travel from Paddington to Oxford. Clearly Belgium only lost because I was not yelling at the screen to encourage them, instead getting updates from the Guardian and the FIFA app. Ah well, next weekend we'll be in France for Bastille Day on Saturday and then the final on Sunday. I seem to have had a lot of Belgium sympathisers participating in the last poll. Those who correctly predicted France to win were sekvo, strange_complex, huskyteer, drplokta, mount_oregano, hano and trepkos.

This coming Saturday the Federal Conference Committee will meet to choose motions for inclusion on the Agenda for Autumn Conference. Earlier this year a motion was submitted for Spring Conference signed by 137 members calling for the UK to Sign the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. FCC chose not to include it on the Agenda then. It has been submitted again, this time with 157 members supporting it : SIGN THE UN TREATY ON THE PROHIBITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS Conference notes that (a) in July 2017 the United Nations voted on and approved the Treaty on the ...

Construction output has continued its recent decline, the third consecutive fall. In May alone construction fell by 1.7%, mainly driven by a sharp decrease of 2.5% in new work. Commenting on the statistics, Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Housing said: "These figures show the Government's complete failure to tackle the housing crisis. Last year social housing numbers hit the lowest since records began while the numbers of people sleeping on our streets rose dramatically. "If we are to build the houses so desperately needed, smaller-scale builders must be given access to finance to break the stranglehold of big developers, ...

In international relations, there are sometimes rare moments of opportunity that need to be grasped. This particular sequence of mid-July 2018 is one. A NATO summit is held on 11 and 12 July in Brussels. On July 16, another summit, also largely devoted to security in Europe, will be held in Helsinki between the United [...] The post We need to make the world safer, but Macron must take the lead appeared first on Radix.

The clamour for changes to Universal Credit is growing louder as it more and more vulnerable claimants find themselves being pushed into destitution, hunger and debt when they move on to the benefit. As the Guardian reports, End Hunger UK, a coalition of 73 poverty charities and faith groups, say that excessive payment delays, common administrative errors and lack of support for claimants struggling to navigate the online-only system is driving up the use of food banks. They have called for a dramatic reduction in the time claimants must wait for a first payment from a minimum of five weeks ...

I went along to the Trust's Open Day last Sunday to both have a look and to help out on the OPSTA stall at the event. Here are a few photos of the vehicles on display:- Nice to meet up with some old friends there even though I'm not really into old buses and cars being a railway enthusiast. I did get to see the latest works on the former Merseyrail Class 502 EMU though and more about that in a separate posting. [IMG: Jacob Rees-Mogg] Jacob Rees-Mogg I remember the first time I heard about Rees-Mogg, it was on Have I Got News For You where they were joking about Rees-Mogg taking his nanny with him when he went out canvassing. I was a PPC during the last election, and I remember when the results were coming in through the night when North-East Somerset results came in Rees-Mogg was standing there with a huge Tory ribbon. Even the Tories were disappointed when the BBC announced he had won. So how did a man who is a backbencher, considered eccentric and not particularly ...

Commenting on the appointment of Chris Heaton-Harris - who previously wrote to universities asking for the names of those who teach courses on Brexit and the content of their lectures - as Brexit Minister, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Layla Moran MP said: "Chris Heaton Harris' letter to British universities was straight out of a dystopian novel and an attempt to spark a witch-hunt against academics and academic freedoms. "To learn that he has been appointed as a Brexit Minister by the Prime Minister would be laughable if it wasn't such a slap in the face for our thriving university sector. ...
