I have been retweeting this exchange every time I have come across it, so I may as well post it here. The way that Jonathan Isaby, who has the manner at least of the privately educated Conservative journalist, is punctured by an encounter with someone who knows what he is talking about it so telling. I particularly like the way his voice goes all high when he is losing the argument. It is hard not to be reminded of a 13-year-old being told off for having an untidy bedroom Of course, I was following Jason Hunter before it was fashionable. ...

1. No, Vince Cable isn't about to step down: "There have been false rumours lately. As this statement says, I'm not stepping down anytime soon." 2. Successful parties need the right leadership, messaging and organisation. All three are parts of success. Thinking only one should be given attention as if getting that one right will fix all problems is a mistake now, just as it has been in the past when some members have fixed on another of the trio. 3. Moreover, how you organise yourself is part of the message and an indication of the style of leadership. That's ...

The risks of alcohol This is a really interesting piece comparing different statistical methods and different reporting methods to explain why different studies come to different conclusions. All career advice for women is a form of gaslighting — Quartz at Work "Humans don't like injustice, and when they cannot easily fix it, they often engage in mental gymnastics to make the injustice more palatable. Blaming victims for their suffering is a classic example." Transport for Greater Manchester is asking people who know and use the city centre to have our say on the big transport issues facing the city and help them ensure they get this balance right for the future. Over the next 20 years, city centre employment levels are expected to rise to around 270,000 people, with up to 100,000 city centre residents. You can have your say on the ideas at the online survey here.

The not-Friday Five

They picked my questions for [IMG: [community profile] ] thefridayfive! Sadly the post went up on Sunday (and, you know, the way I have gone with [IMG: [community profile] ] weekly_food_challenge of late I am absolutely not having a go at anyone over this, I know that sometimes things happen) so a lot fewer people have done answers than normally would. Which makes me sad, because this is stuff that I am genuinely interested in. So... 1, What is your favourite food? I think probably cheese. I love many many foods, but cheese is the only one I can think ...

Even after reading this a couple of times I am still struggling to get my head around the idea that Theresa May's Chequer's deal has prompted a surge in Tory part membership, albeit to try and turn the party whose incompetence is delivering a no-deal, hard Brexit, into one that is even more Eurosceptic. The Telegraph says that the increase in Tory Party membership is triggering concerns that the party is at risk from a 'blue Momentum-style' takeover among supporters furious with the deal which keeps Britain closely tied to the European Union after Brexit. They quote John Strafford, a ...

Recent press headlines screamed that some crime is rising nationally, especially violent crime. What is the situation in our neighbourhood and county? We are overall a low crime county. But we have hotspots. Ludlow is mid-ranking on the crime scale with the northern towns experiencing higher crime rates, especially in their central districts. Deeply rural towns like Church Stretton and Clun are so much quieter. Reported crime is increasing at half the rate in Ludlow compared to Shropshire as a whole, and at just a quarter of the national rate. Any level crime is unwelcome and there are some troublesome ...

Responding to warnings from the Director General of the World Trade Organisation that it is "not realistic" to believe the UK can start trading under WTO rules the day after Brexit in March, Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Tom Brake said: "The damage for businesses and families unveiled in the Conservative Government's no-deal Brexit papers are clear to see. "But the Government's assertions were based on falling back on WTO rules and now even the WTO have warned there is no certainty the UK can follow these immediately. "Without WTO rules, just imagine the true scale of the crisis facing the ...
