Gumley Hall was demolished in 1964. It stood on what is now a large open space between the church and the stables at the top of the hill. Its construction in 1764, and in particular the landscaping of its grounds, brought changes to the village. Today its houses are all sited on the long road running up to the church, but before the Hall was built there was a settlement at the top of the hill. The land it occupied is now a scheduled Ancient Monument. There remains there include the remains of a medieval settlement and of a medieval ...

"Never has it been more important for the decent to stand up to the intemperate, to ignore the promptings of fatigue and pride. Designing your own comfort zone is for losers. Stand and fight." Matthew d'Ancona makes the case against a new centre party. Christopher Kissane reviews David Edgerton's 'The Rise and Fall of the British Nation' for the Irish Times: "Our neighbours to the east feel the hand of history on their shoulders. Britain's Brexit future stands on a foundation of faith in a particular past. A 'unique' and stable 'island story', we are told, sets Britain apart. This ...

Welcome to my series of tips and advice for Liberal Democrat members, which first appeared in the email bulletin run by London Region for party members. Liberal Democrat conferences come with quite a lot of paperwork. That makes the conference app for federal conferences a very handy way of helping to keep on top of all the information. Liberal Democrat conference: what you need to knowThe Liberal Democrats hold two federal (i.e. UK-wide) party conferences a year, a weekend in the spring and a week in the autumn. more The Liberal Democrat conference app has just been updated for the ...

This has been a fantastic day. We had a team of volunteers on site dealing with technical issues on access and safety. But much more important, the paint mob arrived. The site is now a sky-blue and light cloud colour. That will make a fantastic background for the main artwork. We have no more than seven days to complete the full mural. This is an inclusive project. If you can help, join us! Just three weeks ago last Thursday, I met the new owner of the former supermarket site on Upper Galdeford (was Gateway, Somerfield, Co-op, Budgens). I asked the ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:Jackie had never felt fear in her entire life. She had felt caution, and unease, and sadness, and joy, which are all similar to fear. But she had never felt fear itself.I don't think I have previously written up here my thoughts on Welcome to Night Vale, the serial podcast about life in a very strange town somewhere near (but perhaps not quite in) the Southwestern USA. The audio version, in hour-long episodes, is anchored by the reassuring tones of Cecil Baldwin as radio presenter Cecil Palmer, reporting on the horrific absurdities of the town and ...

It's a gorgeous day in Cambridge today, which is a good thing given that there is a local council by-election a week on Thursday. The Welsh Liberal Democrats have been out and about at the Llanfair Caerinion Show with their Brexitometer and their campaign for a People's Vote on the deal. Leader Jane Dodds explains why this is so important for Wales Today at the Llanfair Caereinion Show I have been speaking to people about #Brexit and reiterating the @WelshLibDems call a #FinalSay on the #brexitdeal via a #PeoplesVote. An #ExitFromBrexit must be on the cards, especially if we face a #nodealbrexit or a #HardBrexit. #FBPE pic.twitter.com/QRIAxsOVxu — Jane Dodds (@DoddsJane) September 1, 2018

One of the most useful things you can possibly use to help you prepare for a hectic Conference is the Lib Dem Conference app. It will help you make sense of the numerous choices available. Its timeline session lists everything you could possibly want to do in the auditorium, on the fringe or in the training rooms. It sets out the Conference timetable and allows you to add things to your schedule. You can view it in one list of everything going on or filter it by auditorium, fringe and training. Unfortunately, it can't choose for you which of the ...

Next weekend sees the main Heritage Open Days. The full Northumberland listing is here:- Unfortunately Blyth itself is poorly represented , in that only two organisations are opening their doors. The Blyth Battery however is an excellent place to visit, as is the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club. Outside Blyth there are many locations within 10 miles, Seaton Sluice, New Hartley, Seaton Delaval, Cramlington, Bedlington are all represented. So get out of the house and explore a bit of local history

If you want to submit an amendment to a Conference motion or to ask a question of the party committees, you only have until 1pm tomorrow to do it. Submitting a question is easy – you just fill in the online form here. Believe me, the worst thing is trying to fit it into 25 words. Putting in an amendment is a bit more complicated as you have to get the signatures of at least 10 members or submit on behalf of a local, state or regional party or an SAO like the Young Liberals or the Lib Dem Campaign ...

The Sunday Times reports that Theresa May is facing a fresh threat to her leadership from the man who ran her election campaign, who according to senior Tories is secretly masterminding a bid to destroy her Brexit plan and install Boris Johnson in Downing Street. They say that Sir Lynton Crosby, the election guru who helped Johnson win two London mayoral elections, has ordered his allies to work with hard-line Brexiteers in the Commons to run a nationwide campaign against the prime minister's Chequers plan: One of Crosby's senior staff at his firm CTF Partners is in close contact with ...

In 1973, Gilbert O'Sullivan was a piano-playing superstar on a par with Elton John. Today, he is maybe mentioned in the same breath as Clifford T. Ward - which means he is barely thought of at all.So wrote Bob Stanley in the Guardian three years ago. O'Sullivan has been spoken of a bit more this summer because he has a new album out, but it is true that, not helped by the Bisto Kid image he insisted upon, he has been unfairly written off by history as irredeemably naff. Think of it as Leo Sayer Syndrome. Yet as Stanley went ...

Responding to the news that London's new Crossrail underground line has been delayed by nine months, Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson Jenny Randerson said: "The news of significant delays to London's new Crossrail underground line is desperately disappointing. Given the project is already running almost £600m over budget, serious questions must be answered. "It is therefore essential that the Transport Secretary sets out a full and transparent explanation. With other major projects like HS2 already in trouble, lessons must be learnt urgently."

Do you run one or more Liberal Democrat social media accounts, such as a Twitter account for a local party or a Facebook page for a regional party? If so, then I've got a specially curated RSS feed (https://feeds.markpack.org.uk/libdemamplify.rss) which has stories suitable for sharing on official party accounts. It collates stories from sources such as Vince Cable, the federal website and positive stories about the party in the media, pulling them all together into one RSS feed. Why an RSS feed? Because that's the format with which you can easily automate re-posting of this content to social media accounts. ...

I'm back from a wonderful, blissful and restorative two weeks in my favourite place. Thanks to the team who have worked so hard to keep the site running while I've been away. I'm catching up on all the things I've missed while I've been reading utter trash and walking up and down the wonderful Rosemarkie Beach with the dog. That was the question The Observer posed, with Isabel Hardman answering regarding the Conservatives and George Eaton on Labour. Here's what I said about the Liberal Democrats: In theory, the political landscape looks remarkably promising for Liberal Democrats. Leaders of the two main parties are both deeply unpopular, with "neither" being the most popular choice when voters are asked who they would like as prime minister? Check. Lib Dems have a distinctively different position from both Labour and Conservatives on the biggest issue of the day? Check. Membership at record levels? Check. History is a overwhelmingly male thing and women rarely get much of a mention so it's interesting and informative when someone digs into our history to find out how a woman, working in Liverpool, was helping sailors to navigate at sea in the 18th Century. The story is on Jen's Blog on the National Museums Liverpool (NML) – Merseyside Maritime Museum web page which is linked below:- I hope you'll agree that Jen's investigations into the life and works of Ann Smith helps to redress the balance and bring to the surface the enterprising and important works which Ann ...

There are two motions for debate at Brighton that I particularly welcome, as founder member of ALTER and campaigner on Land Value Taxation (LVT) for 20+ years. There's the one on Commercial Landowners Levy (F26), which is based on an excellent paper by four esteemed experts in our Party. Then there's F34 "Promoting a Fairer Distribution of Wealth". Having read both motions, I was unhappy that F34 failed to match the combination of thorough research and analysis in F26 and also falls short on radical policy proposals to address the main cause of wealth inequality: the so-called Land Question. As ...

We would also not be prepared to open the steps for use until they are fully completed according to the design specification. The material should be delivered next week and as ...
