Another video in the Rediscovering Lost Railway series. This ones traces the line from March to Watlington via Wisbech, much of which is still in situ but decaying in the flat Fenland landscape. We come across a rudimentary preservation group along the way, but there remains a campaign to reopen it as a commercial railway. I posted an earlier video about this line in 2015.

A piece of wisdom from my favourite Liberal Democrat thinker. David Boyle writes on the Radix website: Politicians of all parties have colluded in the idea that house price inflation has been caused by our failure to build enough homes. All the evidence suggests that it was actually too much money pumping into the housing market which caused the ruinous leaps that are excluding middle classes and working classes alike from home ownership. However many homes we build, we will not keep up with the almost infinite demand for housing investment from the Far East. His remedy? Follow New Zealand's lead ...

Autumn matters, liberals

The nights are drawing in, Lib Dem conference is round the corner, so time for me to write a rare blog post. After all, this could be the most important autumn in British politics for a few decades. We are on the brink of sleep-walking into the historically huge own goal of hard Brexit. But [...]

Below are some troubling facts: Over any ten-year period, there have only been two periods of worse wage growth (compared to the last ten years), and that was during the wars; Currently, in the UK people persistently in poverty is equivalent to about 4.6 million; The trussell trust has identified over 1 million people who are given three-day emergency food supplies; The average FTSE chief executive earns 386 times more than a worker on the national living wage (UK living wage is £7.83 per hour); More than 20 per cent of the UK's working population earn a salary below the ...

Back May's Brexit plan or risk no deal, David Lidington tells EU www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45344203 Frankly I don't know whether to laugh or cry, this mess is all of the UK's making. We said we wanted out and now we want 'out' to be on our terms. I'm not even sure that the Government or indeed the Official Opposition, who also back Brexit, know what kind of a deal they actually want anyway! We must look an odd self-destructive lot to our soon to be ex-European partners as they clearly can't work out what we are up to or even why. Then ...

Its conference season and the one time in the year when the Lib Dems get reasonably good news coverage. Our conference is first, followed by Labour and then the Tories. We need to get our message across about Brexit and not lose or have our message diluted by Vince's announcement that he may or may not step down or lose the message to a difficult policy debate such as the one on immigration. The focus for this conference should be on Brexit and how can we stop the UK leaving the EU. Lord Kerr believes that we can still withdraw ...

If you've never had a baby, it may be difficult to imagine what it is like. There is much preparation beforehand with scans and regular check-ups. There are also classes which focus predominantly on birth giving as well as baby showers where friends and relatives give you tiny clothing and other gifts. Unless you undertake a lot of reading or have experience with child-rearing, you are pretty much on your own after giving birth. Amazingly, the hospital staff just let you walk away with some tips and coupons and an entirely helpless small human being in a carrier. That's not ...

Aung San Suu Kyi received her Nobel Prize in 1991 for her "non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights." No one at the time, other than some in Myanmar, would have disagreed with that. It was also a welcome achievement when she became the head of state in 2015. There was hope that someone, like her who had suffered so much, showed such determination to fight for freedom, would be a champion to improve the human rights in Myanmar. In her Nobel lecture, Aung San remarked: "Wherever suffering is ignored, there will be the seeds of conflict, for suffering degrades ...

Just how much trouble Jeremy Corbyn is in with the Jewish community is illustrated today by an article in the Guardian, who report that the former chief rabbi Jonathan Sacks has called Jeremy Corbyn an anti-Semite. he says that the Labour leader's comment about Zionists at a 2013 conference was the most offensive statement by a senior UK politician since Enoch Powell's "rivers of blood" speech: In an interview with the New Statesman, Sacks, who was the UK's chief rabbi from 1991 to 2013, said Corbyn had "given support to racists, terrorists and dealers of hate who want to kill ...

The Wall Street Journal reports ($) that Germany and France are considering offering Turkey a 'financial lifeline.' Well, what a surprise. What this means, of course, is that they are considering two things: how to bail out their own banks with which Turkey now has unsustainable debt levels; and trying to find ways to prevent President Erdogan [...] The post The debt consequences of authoritarians appeared first on Radix.

In Wales, like the rest of the UK, we are seeing increasing homelessness and food bank usage. The UK Government continues to roll out a Universal Credit system that will exacerbate this poverty. No compassionate politician can resign themselves to worsening poverty. We need to look for progressive solutions and to continue our opposition to government policies that demonise the poor. One possible solution is a Universal Basic Income (UBI), an idea that has been the subject of much debate across the political spectrum, including within our own party. UBI is a conviction that people seek purpose, and - if ...
