Transplant -7

I was admitted a day early to hospital for my stem cell transplant, so it's now transplant -7, or T -7. Today has been relatively straightforward – the usual whirl of form filling, new people to get to know and an hour's infusion of bendamustine. Tomorrow looks similar. My room does have a view, with one aspect onto a terraced ... The post Transplant -7 appeared first on ten pence piece.

I was one of the Liberal Democrat Federal Board (FB) members who requested that yesterday we debate adopting the IHRA's definition of anti-semitism, including the worked examples, for use in the party's disciplinary processes. We voted to do this.

Interview with Renaud Girard first published in FigaroVox FIGAROVOX.- Today, the African continent is experiencing a population explosion and Europe is aging. Why not just accept immigration? This morning, I saw in my Twitter feed a tweet from George Eaton, the political editor of the New Statesmen, which read: "The Lib Dems are on 6%. It's almost like centrism isn't what voters want." It reminded me of one of my pet peeves of this current political era: people extrapolating from the low poll ratings the Liberal Democrats constantly get that centrism is dead or at least in serious trouble. What it could mean instead is that the Lib Dems alone are dead, for reasons that have nothing to do with the popularity or otherwise of centrism or ...

[IMG: Martello Tower 6 [Sandgate Escarpment] (Copyright Steve Popple and licensed for reuse under a Creative Commons Licence.)] Sandgate Parish Council was advised yesterday (4th September) that the vendor of this site had sold the property to another buyer at a significantly higher price and was therefore withdrawing from the sale to the Parish Council. This is despite written commitments to cease marketing the site after the sale to the Parish Council had been confirmed. The vendor (Mr John Forge of Westenhanger Castle) advised that the new owner intended to implement the planning permission in full, starting with the renovation ...

The following is a conversation that may or may not have happened over social media last night following the Survation poll that put UKIP ahead of the Lib Dems. Person 1: Lib Dems down 4% again. They get what they fucking deserve. Person 2: Eh? Person 1: Lying about tuition fees. The sooner they become extinct the better. Person 2: So you are happy with the poll? Person 1: Fuck yes. Person 2: But you've received plenty of racist abuse over the years and you are rejoicing that UKIP are polling above the Lib Dems. Person 1: No, I'm happy ...

If there was a prize for scoring own goals then Jeremy Corbyn would win it hands down. For just as the Labour NEC finally adopted the all internationally recognised definitions of anti-Semitism, the Labour leader pitched in with an attempt to introduce caveats that would have undermined the whole exercise. As the Independent reports, Corbyn, in a rare defeat, was forced to withdraw a further statement, because he lacked support, which argued it should not be "regarded as anti-Semitic to describe Israel, its policies or the circumstances around its foundation as racist". That still left those campaigning for change with ...

With apologies to turtles and rocks, Brexit is myths all the way down. Its central thesis – that the UK can turn on its heel and thrive without the EU – has proven to be a myth. According to UBS, the UK has already lost 2% of GDP due to Brexit, and it hasn't even ... Continue reading The growing myth of Brexit 'incompetence'

Payday Loans

I feel quite pleased that Wonga went into liquidation. I am sad for their employees (as we all have families to support) but I am sure the directors will walk away with their egos bruised and millions from ill-gotten gains. Companies like Wonga are effectively no more than legalised loan sharks. Looking at a quick comparison between payday loans for short-term loans the APR varies from 500 per cent to just under 1600 per cent a year. A survey by the Royal Society for Public Health ranked payday loans as having the most detrimental effect on mental health well-being. There ...
