Leicestershire take the field against the touring South Africans on 3 May 1924. The ground is not Grace Road, where Leicestershire play their games today, but the old Aylestone Road ground. As I wrote when I visited it three summers ago: This is the ground where, between 1901 and 1939, Leicestershire played their county games. According to the club's website, the great names who played hear include Grace, Bradman, Hammond and Hutton. ... The county played a couple of further championship games at Aylestone Road after the war and the final first-class match here was between Leicestershire and Cambridge University ...

This is very welcome news: People with disabilities are to be offered thousands of pounds to help them run for elected office in next year's council elections as part of an effort to tackle under-representation in town halls. Grants averaging £4,000 will be made available to some to cover costs of campaign expenses including specialist transport, screen reader software, sign language interpretation and braille transcription. Only 10% of councillors have a disability, compared with about 20% of the UK population. The government is offering £250,000, which is expected to fund around 60 candidates. As detailed in many previous posts, I believe that no deal which could be contrived between the EU and the UK outside the EU could be anywhere near as good as we already have if the UK remains inside the EU, so I haven't bothered my head with all the minutiae of the alternatives, be they Norway+, Norway ++, Canada + or whatever. However, I am increasingly concerned that the apparent impasse over the "Irish Backstop" is being portrayed by the government and their supporting media as an intransigent EU behaving unreasonably and frustrating the legitimate aims of the UK. ...

Gateshead Lib Dems held another action day on Saturday, this time in Dunston Hill and Whickham East ward. We won the seat up for election in this ward from Labour in May and Labour's last seat here is being contested in May 2019. Alas, I was only able to get along in the morning as I had been invited by Groundwork, the environmental charity, to take some of my goats to a fair they were holding

Since my defenestration in 2015 I've watched Prime Minister's Questions just a handful of times. I hated the weekly pantomime when I was an MP too. But I thought today would be an occasion worth watching. Have a think about three Labour leaders – John Smith, Tony Blair and Jeremy Corbyn. They've all faced Tory [...]

Second paragraph of third chapter: "At least I have something to be arrogant about," I replied. The soft background music I'd been talking over stopped suddenly and my too loud voice hung in the air. All party conversation ceased. I approached this with some trepidation, having bounced off Synners a few months ago - but actually I really enjoyed this tale of a woman with three identities, or possibly three women sharing bodies, or possibly a woman struggling for mindspace with two artifical personalities, each with different parts of the picture trying to work out what is going on. I ...

To celebrate and get in the mood for the festive season I thought that we could have a writing competition. As many of you (on average at least 4,500 members visit the Lib Dem Voice site every day) write articles, read them or comment I propose a Christmas Article Competition. The proposed Competition Rules are: An Article should not be more than 550 words; The article in each of the specified areas will be jointly judged by representatives identified as experts in that area by Lib Dem Voice and Lib Dem editors; The starting date for the competition starts as ...

As a party with a long history we embrace the principles of Liberalism and since the merger with the SDP those of social democrats as well. Outsiders often lazily describe the party as having liberal and social democratic wings. The reality, of course, is a lot more complicated. Internal pressure groups like the Social Liberal Forum and Liberal Reform represent different strands of thought within the party, but they are not disciplined organised groups. Amongst our MPs, it has been a practice to align individuals regarding their attitude to the ground-breaking Orange Book. If you are one of those who ...

Listening to the news this morning it is clear that those MPs advocating the 'Norway option' as a solution to the current Parliamentary impasse over Brexit are gaining support. But is it the panacea some are claiming. This particular solution would keep the UK in the EU single market, through membership of the European Economic Area, the 31-country zone that covers EU member states plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It also means joining the European Free Trade Area, which also includes Switzerland. Its advocates say that their plan would help the UK minimise the economic impact of Brexit, while also ...

An Arriva 300 bus at the Meadows bus stop, Maghull. A recent conversation with a Maghull resident made me aware that there are concerns that weekday afternoon 300 Arriva buses are not necessarily reliable and it made me think. Think because I have previously heard concerns being raised about the unreliability of the 300 bus on weekday afternoons. Is this a common issue? I'd like to hear from any users of the route, so please get in touch. Coincidentally, I've also picked up a copy of a recent report from Mike Perkins of OPSTA (Ormskirk, Preston and Southport Travellers Association) ...

Greater Manchester Councils have confirmed that the next set of proposals for the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework (GMSF) will be published in early January 2019 for an eight-week public consultation. The bad news is that the Government seem to be expecting Councils to go for a higher number of homes than had recently expected which would mean the plan has to provide the space for over 200,000 new homes over the next 20 years – in additional to land for jobs and industry. Prior to his election the Mayor of Greater Manchester had promised "No net loss of Green Belt", ...

At the most recent full meeting of Bury Council, the Liberal Democrat group of councillors were successful in getting the whole Council to sign up to a principle of building future homes which are 'fit for the future'. Recently the Government has announced a relaxation of the restrictions on Councils which will hopefully mean that Bury can soon finance building new homes, including new Council Houses, something that has not happened in any numbers for many decades. For us this is a really important opportunity to make sure that people have homes that they can afford and are right for ...

It was quite the evening in the House of Commons last night. Theresa May was stepping up to debate her Brexit deal with the House – meaning, she had to stand in the middle and hear from all sides how bad most MPs think it is, something she's signed up to do for four more days – yet before that had even happened, she had lost three votes already. Two involving the government not releasing the legal advice on Brexit (the second vote causing the House to hold the government in contempt, something that has never happened before in all ...

International Volunteer Day takes place on the 5th December to celebrate the hard work of volunteers. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community and take on many important roles, be that looking after parks and paths or volunteering in local charity shops or community groups. Without volunteers, these things would not be able to take place and life would be trickier in our local communities. † This year, there is a special focus on local community volunteers across the world through the title of "Volunteers build Resilient Communities". This focus aims to celebrate those who have remained resilient in the ...

Health bosses are encouraging older people to have their free flu vaccination and get protected against the virus ahead of winter. Stocks of the flu vaccine designed for over 65s are fully available - meaning anyone who still needs the jab can get it before the flu season hits. With flu rates currently low, there is still time for older people to protect themselves against the flu as well as its side effects which, in some cases, can lead to hospitalisation. The free vaccination is available at GP surgeries and pharmacies across the borough. Dr Jeffrey Schryer, Chair of NHS ...

December 11th is when the government will present the Brexit deal that they have been negotiating for the last eighteen months to parliament. The EU has said that it's this deal or no deal. The boasting of Tory ministers on TV programmes about six months ago that a no deal would be better than a bad deal may be a reality, and most sane politicians are more than worried regarding this outcome. If the deal is rejected on 11th December, there is no time to renegotiate another deal. There is effectively now no time to have a referendum, before we ...
