Chuka Umunna wish to bring in compulsory national service for 16-year-olds is a reminder that proclaiming you are in the centre does not make you a Liberal. This combination of muscular Christianity and middle-class impatience with the lower orders was typical of Labour under Blair. It was also found among the people who joined the SDP, though less so among the politicians who formed it. I am all in favour of giving young people volunteering opportunities. Come to that, I am in favour of giving older people such opportunities too. But I am not attracted by the idea of compulsion. ...

Is there a competition amongst Tory Cabinet Ministers to see who can make the biggest gaffe and still remain sitting at the cabinet table? Is first prize tea at the Ritz? Because if it is, Chris Grayling is still in pole position, but Northern Ireland Secretary, Karen Bradley is running him close. I only ask because if that is not the case then we are doomed, doomed I tell you, to obscurity and disaster as a country. Never in the history of the United Kingdom has our future been entrusted to such a bunch of nincompoops at such a crucial ...

I was in Maghull Town Hall's Council Chamber a couple of weeks back for a meeting of the Maghull in Bloom Volunteers and could not be anything other than impressed with the scaled-down sculpture/piece of artwork that is on display there:- The original life-size version of this lovely piece of remembrance sculpture is in the grounds of Liverpool's famous bombed out church – St Lukes at the top of Bold Street and it looks like this:-

Next week we have a busier week with 3 by-elections taking place with Lib Dem candidates standing in all. See below our list for ...
