Wonderful stuff. Early on we see the extraordinary clutter outside the station, including a show home that was used to promote the new suburban estates along the lines to the north. Then it is the scene of the robbery in The Ladykillers before the steam locomotives take over. The books will tell you that Mrs Wilberforce's house was a set, but I am sure I spotted it later on in this film.

Brilliant news from Twickenham, where Munira Wilson has been selected in the constituency following Vince Cable's announcement of his plans to stand down at the next election.

There's an intriguing story on Kent Online: The selection of a Liberal Democrat candidate to contest the Canterbury seat at the next election has been unexpectedly put on hold. A selection meeting was scheduled to take place tomorrow, but has been postponed indefinitely. It is understood local association party chiefs were contacted this week by the national party and told to cancel the selection meeting but were given no explanation why. There is speculation the party has acted to keep some seats open in the event of further high-profile defections from other parties amid the Brexit chaos. You have to be ...

You may recall - you probably don't - that there was a controversy in August over whether Britain exports pork pies to Iceland and Thailand. The conclusion, as far as my researches went, is that we used to in a small way but don't any more. Lord Bonkers, as so often, has a different take on the matter. Saturday Those who believe we do not export pork pies to Iceland should take a stroll along Oakham Quay, as I did this morning. The Arctic Fleet was newly in port, its rigging still sheathed in ice. If I am honest, our ...

With Norman Lamb standing down at the next general election, Liberal Democrat members in North Norfolk have selected Karen Ward as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC).

TL;DR summary: if you adjust the uniform swing so that voting patterns reflect echoes of past Labour or LibDem strength, the predicted Tory majority vanishes. If you add onto this a measure of tactical voting, their seat share might fall by dozens of seats more. But detecting whether this is realistic is very, very hard. [...]

Our three-yearly round of internal party elections gets underway when nominations open this Thursday (12 September), ahead of the party conference at Bournemouth - which is traditionally the opportunity to gather signatures on nominations. (A new online nomination process is also being trialled, alongside the old-fashioned paper method). Every member of the party gets the opportunity to vote in these elections, which are largely on-line. Top of the bill is Federal President, to take over from Sal Brinton on 1 January and serve for 2020, 2021 and 2022. This is a major role, chairing the party's Federal Board, protecting and ...

Second frame of third page of "Distortia", by Renee Rienties: Rene Rienties kicks off with a story about a young psychic woman who is called in by the chap in the beard here to investigate what has happened to his brother Robby. There's an animated version of the first part of the story here. A month after the horrific attack in Christchurch, which was live-streamed on Facebook, New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern said: "It's critical that technology platforms like Facebook are not perverted as a tool for terrorism, and instead become part of a global solution to countering extremism." We wholeheartedly agree. Neo-Nazi and other far-right material, alongside Islamist and far-left content, spread swiftly on Facebook, with a potential to reach thousands in a matter of hours. Facebook is not alone; Social media platforms have been used by extremists to radicalise and inspire acts of terrorism across the world. Exposure to online extremism is ...

Check out this link to a recent survey of teachers. When asked how they would vote if a general election were held now, 30% of those surveyed said Lib Dem! This is remarkable, as 60% in a previous survey said they voted Labour in the 2017 election. The move towards Lib Dems shows we are getting our education policy right – calling for increased funding and reversing school cuts; increased teachers' pay and allowing teachers to teach rather than being put under unnecessary pressure from inspections; and supporting SEND pupils with increased provision. I want to make the case that Jo Swinson MP's proposed policy of revoking Article 50 if the Lib Dems win a majority government actually makes stopping Brexit less likely. Calling for a final say referendum on any Brexit deal has been our defining policy for over three years and has brought this party back to life and back to electoral popularity. The reason a final say referendum has grown in popularity (with the public and in Parliament) is not especially because the arguments for voting Remain have become more persuasive than the arguments for voting Leave, but because it ...

John Bercow, the Speaker (chairman) of the House of Commons, has made a name for himself during his tenure, and particularly in the last few weeks, for championing the rights of parliament against the government. For his pains he has been abused by Brexiteers, and even by Andrea Leadsom, Leader of the Commons, for alleged "flagrant abuse" of parliamentary process." In fact Mr Bercow has been doing exactly what he's supposed to do: champion the commons against the government. The presiding officer of the commons has the idiosyncratic title of "Speaker" because in the early history of parliament that is ...

"This is the fourth of a five-part series of pieces highlighting the issues of concern to Liberal Democrat members beyond our shores. For the first in the series, click here..." The 2016 Referendum result has plunged the lives of the 1.2 million British citizens resident outside the UK in the EU into a maelstrom of loss and uncertainty. It is important to remember that about 600 000 of them are disenfranchised by the 15-year rule for overseas voting and thus many of the individuals most heavily and directly impacted by Brexit are those with no democratic voice in the process ...

Death is in charge of the clattering train! (Edwin James Milliken) The now seemingly inevitable general election that we are doomed to endure will without a doubt be one of the most divisive and decisive in British political history. Boris Johnson's strategy is to divide the Remain vote and set himself as the people's champion – no matter how irrational that theory is. Labour, who plan to try a rerun of their 2017 campaign and put Jeremy Corbyn forwards as a radical, reforming leader, and polling miserably for an opposition to a disastrous government. Dominic Cummings is intent on capturing ...

Labour's flirtation with Brexit continued yesterday when Jeremy Corbyn promised a further referendum on Brexit with a "credible Leave option" versus Remain if his party wins the next general election, undoing all the good work he has done over the past week in working with other party leaders to foil Boris Johnson's no-deal agenda. Essentially Labour's position now appears to amount to a manifesto commitment to negotiate a better deal to leave the EU, if that is possible (and we know how that turned out for Theresa May), and then take that deal to the country. However, the party will ...

Liberal Democrat bus campaigners are celebrating victory in their campaign for a cheap fare for bus journeys within the towns of Yate, Chipping Sodbury and Thornbury. Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Thornbury & Yate, Claire Young, said: "This is fantastic news for bus users in Thornbury and Yate. The National Audit Office has today published their investigation into special educational needs support. Entitled "Support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in England", it has revealed that more than four in five local authorities are overspending their high needs budget. A couple of months ago I sent a survey to all headteachers in my constituency asking how education cuts affected their pupils. All the surveys returned highlighted cutbacks in SEND provision as being a huge area of concern. 1.3 million pupils in England are identified as having special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Over a million (79%) ...

Place North West has an interesting and thought provoking article on its website – see link below:- www.placenorthwest.co.uk/news/my-place-southport/ In my view Southport suffers from two distinct and unique disadvantages. Firstly, of being at one far end of a Metropolitan Borough (Sefton) whilst being mostly surrounded by a County (Lancashire) it no longer (since 1974) has any significant political connections with. Secondly, of having very some poor road and rail connections to the east and north of it. If you start from the premise that the modern custodians have failed then I feel the disadvantages which have been put in their ...

At the last minute, through a tweet, Donald Trump cancelled, last Saturday, a meeting he was supposed to hold secretly the next day in Camp David with a delegation of Afghan Taliban. Also expected in this Maryland resort was the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani, for a separate meeting with his American counterpart. Trump's deal with the Islamist rebels was to be as follows: in exchange for the withdrawal of a third of the American soldiers from Afghanistan (now 14,000), the Taliban would have accepted a ceasefire, as well as the opening direct dialogue with the legitimate government of Ashraf ...
