Commonwealth Games organisers fears over Brexit impact revealed by Lib Dems For the first time the Commonwealth Games organisers deepest fears about the impact of Brexit have been laid bare as a result of a Liberal Democrat investigation. The Games' organisers state that there is a risk that the UK's EU Exit will negatively affect Games deliverables, by changes to Government policy, economic impacts across markets and industries. This could result in potential workforce attrition and cost inflation. They count this risk as the highest possible, 20 out of 20. In another document, marked 'sensitive' from February, the organisers in ...

During the week, I wrote again for Liberal Democrat Voice about standing for Party President, this time about winning elections at all levels: We should never forget that elections at all levels matter. They directly give us the chance to implement our vision for a liberal democrat society in more communities, and they also are the springboard to future success in elections at other levels. We saw that so clearly this May, where put more Lib Dems into power and set us up win a record number of MEPs, not to mention putting us very much back on the national ...

Nicola Horlick, at one time Britain's best-know businesswoman and a Conservative, has just been adopted as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Chelsea and Fulham. In an interview with the i newspaper she gives us a glimpse of what Jo Swinson is up to: "A lot of MPs from both Labour and the Tories were talking to Jo Swinson about defecting, but the trouble is we've got all our candidates already."The answer seems to be for the existing Lib Dem candidate to stand down: It does seem unfair that someone who has worked so hard at a local level to get ...

Blake's 7: the first series (1978)A few weeks ago I realised that if I tried watching a Blake's 7 episode every two days, starting on 10 September, then I will get to the end on this year's Gauda Prime Day, 21 December. So I've been working through the first series, and have just finished it. As it happens I tried a Blake's 7 rewatch back in 2007-8, and got as far as the end of the first series (and tried again in 2009 but never got past the first episode), so here I'm going to update my previous remarks, linking ...

[IMG: Tim Prater] Pleased to say that further to my motion to Folkestone and Hythe District Council last week on changing the governance system (which was passed, amended by the Conservatives but leaving, I think, the intention intact) there has been feedback from the Council Head of Paid Service Susan Priest outlining how she plans to move forward. Susan has been working with officers to "scope out a forward plan and resource the matter", and is looking to get outside support from the LGA (Local Government Association) and a facilitator. It's hoped that the first meeting of the Governance Working ...

Doreen Service lived on Foxhouse Lane in Maghull, opposite the former Red House pub (now The Fox), for many a year before retiring to Rock Lane in Melling opposite the Bootle Arms pub. Her husband Ian died quite some years ago when they lived in Maghull and Doreen herself passed away very recently at the grand old age of 91. Doreen had been a teacher and a local magistrate. I relate this information not just because some Maghull and Melling residents will have known Doreen and will be sad to hear that she has passed on but because she was ...

Yesterday, Wera Hobhouse led a Commons debate on women's mental health. Before the debate, she wrote for Politics Home about the responsibility MPs have to strengthen these vital services: Whether it's desperation over housing, Universal Credit, or Personal Independence Payments, the numbers of people struggling have increased dramatically, exacerbating mental health issues. And for women, these problems are increasing. More women – one in five – experience common mental health disorders like anxiety and depression compared with men, according to the charity Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk. Young women are even more vulnerable with 26 percent ...

Supporters of Jeremy Corbyn often tell me not to quote the Murdoch media. They forgot their own advice when they retweeted a false claim by Sky News. Sky's Jon Craig implied that Jo Swinson was the only leader opposed to Corbyn as leader of a government of national unity. Yet Anna Soubry the leader of Change UK was at the meeting, and she is resolutely opposed to Corbyn, as are most of the 34 independents. So many that, even if the Lib Dems did support him, Corbyn wouldn't have a majority. Nonetheless, the Labour and SNP leaderships constantly push this ...

The latest State of Nature report, which draws on scientific monitoring since the 1970s, concludes that the UK's wildlife is dying out and many species will go extinct if urgent action is not taken. The Independent says leading professionals from more than 70 wildlife organisations have joined government agencies to create the comprehensive report, which warns wildlife declines continue "unabated": Among thousands of mammal and plant species assessed, 15 per cent are threatened with being lost from Britain, including wildcats and greater mouse-eared bats. More than two-fifths of UK species including animals, birds and butterflies have seen significant declines in ...

This is final blog from our chief executive reporting back on the third of the main party conferences ... Right back in the ancient times of August - was it really only eight weeks ago? - I wrote that Boris wasn't "actually that interested in a no deal Brexit", but merely wanted to avoid the blame for not bringing one about. Having completed my tour of party conferences this week with the Conservatives, I still believe that that's the case. Despite the work that has gone into getting a deal with the EU, since the Supreme Court overruled the proroguing ...
