Tories should be cutting emissions, not air passenger duty Following the reports that the Conservative government is considering cutting air passenger duty on domestic flights as part of a plan to save regional airline Flybe from collapse, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Munira Wilson said: Flybe looks set to follow Thomas Cook, despite only being "rescued" last year. The way to ensure our businesses stay afloat is to provide certainty, rather than the chaos the Conservatives have presided over for the last three years. Offering troubled airlines like Flybe cuts to Air Passenger Duty is not the answer and a huge ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:Or perhaps that's old news, they became a couple months ago. They are not in a pub. They arc at her kitchen table eating dinner with her parents. There is polite intergenerational conversation. They all agree that reinstating border controls will be bad for business. He has just gotten a job with a wholesale supplier, delivering animal feed to farms both sides of the border. Her mother asks about this, she approves. It's all quite pleasant but there are sideways glances between the young couple. She lives with her parents and he lives with his, this ...

Responding to the Prime Minister's suggestion that the Iran nuclear deal should be replaced with a 'Trump deal', Ed Davey, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats said: "Johnson's dishonesty is apparent yet again. His claim that he will continue to support the current Iran nuclear deal is immediately undermined by his suggestion of a 'new Trump deal'. Let there be no doubt: when Trump says jump, Johnson asks 'how high?'. "The current nuclear deal with Iran is all about stopping this brutal regime from becoming a nuclear state. Johnson needs to remind President Trump just how high these stakes are."The ...

Responding to news that the UK failed to pass on the details of 75,000 convictions of foreign criminals to their home EU countries and tried to conceal the scandal, Christine Jardine MP, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokesperson, said: "UK police rely on EU-wide data-sharing systems to identify criminals and keep us safe. For the Home Office to fail so badly to live up to its side of that agreement is shameful."The Home Office has serious questions to answer over this. Not just the failure to pass on details of convicted criminals to other EU countries, but the cover up afterwards ...

I haven't written anything about the Lib Dems since the week following the general election. This is because I haven't been able to think of anything positive to say and no one wants to read about how the Liberal Democrats are completely screwed. However, having turned this over in my mind during the past few weeks, I feel I have the following to say. The Lib Dems have several big problems. One is that they managed to completely misuse what may turn out to be a once in a century opportunity, namely that MPs from both of the big two ...

As is traditional, Liberal Democrat Voice will be covering the maiden speeches of our new MPs as they happen. First up, yesterday, was Daisy Cooper in the Queen's Speech debate, responding to Dominic Raab on the subject of Britain in the World... It is a great honour to make my maiden speech following many other accomplished and passionate speakers. My constituency of St Albans is very proud of its contribution both to Britain's history and to Britain's place in the world. Alban himself is the first recorded Christian martyr and Britain's first saint. He was executed for giving shelter to ...

A Law Commission report has confirmed what many of us have known for some time, that immigration rules are "overly complex and unworkable". As the Guardian reports, the Commission believe that simplifying them in would save the government £70m over the next decade. It may also save many immigrants a huge amount of grief and heartache. The Law Commission point out that the regulations have quadrupled in length since 2010 and are "comprehensively criticised for being poorly drafted". When introduced in 1973, immigration rules ran to 40 pages; they now extend across 1,100. The report observes that making them more ...

Tories failing to keep people safe Responding to the HM Inspectorate of Probation report, which has found that the National Probation Service (NPS) is hampered by staff shortages, stretched middle managers and poor facilities, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson Daisy Cooper said: This Conservative Government is failing in its most important duty: keeping people safe. Staff shortages in the Probation Service mean that high-risk individuals in our communities are not being properly supervised. This alarming report shows that ending private probation contracts and unifying the system, while clearly necessary, will not be nearly enough to fix the major problems in probation. ...
