In Cromford last summer I found St Mary's church open because Excellent Women were at work inside. So I took some photographs. The church's Listing on the Historic England site gives its history: The church was begun in 1792 for Richard Arkwright¿s industrial complex and residence at Cromford, and was prominently sited next to the cotton mill and River Derwent. It was designed by Thomas Gardner (c1737-1804), architect and builder of Uttoxeter, who was also employed on the reconstruction of Arkwright's Willersley Castle. The wide proportions of the nave are characteristic of the period, and Gardner's church probably had a ...

Delivering Focus

I was in Whickham this morning to deliver 370 Focuses. I managed to beat the rain but I had to cling to the newsletters in the gale that was blowing. 2 hours later and the job was done.

After I left Boxmoor and arrived in Market Harborough, life was difficult. I had moved from a comprehensive that had been a very traditional grammar school to one (a middle school) that had been a secondary modern. I was left by my new school to sink or swim. There was no pastoral care and no help coping with a very different curriculum. I suppose my problem was that though I was poor I could still pass as middle class. Most damaging, I found that if I did not work, no one was going to make me. I reacted like any ...

Responding to ONS figures today that show the UK posted a budget surplus of £9.8bn in January, down 18% compared to the same time last year, Liberal Democrat Acting Leader Ed Davey said:"Rishi Sunak is now under even greater pressure to deliver a budget that works for all people."Under Johnson the economy has been an afterthought. 2019 ended with a quarter of no growth, falling manufacturing output and declining business investment. Now just weeks before the budget even the fiscal picture is in question."The Chancellor must prove that he can do more than just please Number 10. He must deliver ...

We were delighted to welcome Lib Dem President @markpack yesterday for a fascinating discussion about populism, social media, party structures, and his new book. Next week we will be making a trip to parliament to visit @wendychambLD and hear about life as a new MP. pic.twitter.com/IqtTOTIY0O — Cambridge University Liberals (@CamUniLiberals) February 21, 2020 It may be a trend, a coincidence or something I'm just late to noticing. But I was really struck by how good the format of the events was when I've been to speak to two university Liberal Democrat societies since starting as Party President. In both ...

Second paragraph of third essay ("Pen, Pencil, And Poison - A Study In Green", about Thomas Griffiths Wainewright) - brace yourself, it's a long 'un:This remarkable man, so powerful with 'pen, pencil and poison,' as a great poet of our own day has finely said of him, was born at Chiswick, in 1794. His father was the son of a distinguished solicitor of Gray's Inn and Hatton Garden. His mother was the daughter of the celebrated Dr. Griffiths, the editor and founder of the Monthly Review, the partner in another literary speculation of Thomas Davis, that famous bookseller of whom ...

If you were planning a new play area on the new development in north Yate, would you put it within 30m of the existing well loved play area in the current park, Brinsham Fields? Well that is what the planners are insisting the developers do. Instead of using the money to put more equipment in the current play area, they are insisting they build a new one just yards away - which means money gets wasted on unnecessary fencing, bins etc, when they could use that money in the existing fenced play area to put in more equipment. It will ...

I have just spent two days in a cramped Vauxhall Astra chauffering my brother, his wife, her sister and her brother-in-law. It was an interesting experience. They are from the Bible Belt states of North Carolina and Georgia respectively and dyed-in-the-wool Republican Trump supporters. They regard me as a beyond redemption loony liberal. The first day they were recovering from jet lag and weren't up to political battle. But as we drove out to Oxford on the second day swords were crossed. The group's champion was brother-in-law, Paul, a Christian missionary with a political science degree. We disagreed, but the ...

To my all my non-Lib Dem readers, an apology and a plea to bear with me. What follows is more than simply a review of the latest attempt by the Liberal Democrats to explain to Britain who they are in two minutes and forty-five seconds. It's about what constitutes the centre-ground in these fractured times and why that matters. To the video at hand: the production value is actually pretty good for a PPB, particularly one made outside of an election period, although this went out to their mailing list only, as far as I can tell, so perhaps it ...

Those of us who have been in politics for some time will recall the battles of old around maintaining sustainable communities in the face of the growth of second homes in rural holiday hotspots, long-term empty properties and HMOs, especially in university towns. However, as the Guardian outlines in this article, there is a new threat in town and one that so far has alluded any attempt at control or regulation by local councils or government. The paper reports that Airbnb has become so prevalent in Great Britain that some parts of the country now have one listing for every ...

Residents have highlighted to me significant flooding again recently at the south end of Roseangle. I raised this with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have been given an assurance that a gully motor will attend the site and deal with any gullies that are blocked.
