The Medbourne Village website has a good page about the Cunards and their tenure of Nevill Holt, Edward Cunard purchased the Nevill Holt estate in 1876. The following year it was inherited by his brother Sir Bache Cunard: By 1886 Sir Bache found himself in constrained financial circumstances which caused him to mortgage the Estate to some clients of Peake and Company, Solicitors in London. By 1893 however the mortgagees wished to foreclose on the mortgage and Particulars of Sale were prepared. However, his marriage in 1895 to Maud Burke enabled the Estate to be maintained.Maud Burke was yet another ...

During Storm Dennis last weekend, there were no sandbags to be found in Ludlow. It was impossible for residents and businesses to get to the Craven Arms depot to pick sandbags because the A49 was closed due to flooding. We have yet another flood warning in place for the Teme for tonight into tomorrow (Sunday). Shropshire Council is delivering pallets of sandbags to Lower Corve Street and Temeside. It has changed its sandbag takeaway policy from drive thru to delivery at home. That is very welcome. The ground is saturated. A lot of soil on farmland has been washed away. ...

Oliver!

Oliver! won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1968, and picked up another five: Best Director (Carol Reed), Best Musical Adaptation Score, Best Art Direction, Best Sound and a special award for choreographer Onna White. It lost in five other categories. The other Best Picture nominees were Funny Girl, The Lion In Winter, Rachel, Rachel and Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet. IMDB users have not rated it as highly as Oscar voters did, placing it 11th on one system and 18th on the other; ahead of it on both rankings are 2001: A Space Odyssey, Once Upon a Time in the ...

Good luck to Councillor Andy Corkhill who has been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Metro Mayor. Selected by party members for this May's Metro Mayor contest, Andy Corkill stood in Wirral West at the 2019 general election and has been a councillor in Wirral since May 2019. He's highlighted five priorities for the Metro Mayor: To revolutionise transport across the Liverpool City Region; To equalise education and skills across the region; To enhance the Liverpool City Region on a global level; To protect the rights of European Union citizens; and To take the ...

Jackson Carlaw (Photo: The National) There have, understandably, been many vocal responses to Home Secretary Priti Patel's announcement of the UK government's new immigration policy. I will leave the commenting on the policy itself to others, but for the record I find myself agreeing with Christine Jardine (writing in the New Statesman). One of the more interesting reactions comes from an unlikely source: new leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Jackson Carlaw. Mr Carlaw, who was elected to succeed Ruth Davidson only a week ago, has expressed disappointment in the policy and has indicated that he will - to quote The ...

Boris Johnson's government is out to redefine a great deal of what has previously been accepted wisdom, so why not equalities? At least he has appointed an equalities minister, even if she has a fairly loose concept of what her brief means. According to the Independent, Kemi Badenoch, the government's newly appointed junior minister for equalities has never voted on equal gay rights or gay marriage in her three years as an MP. They say she is working on policy for women and LGBT+ people - but she has abstained on every Commons vote on the issue: In July 2019, ...

Leaving aside two typos (no, they weren't really debating the internet in 1919 and no, those 1974 radios weren't wireless access points ahead of their time) the first mention of the internet in Parliament was, as far as I can find, in February 1990. It came from then Conservative MP (and later Liberal Democrat) Emma Nicholson: According to L'Express, in a few months the hackers of Hamburg were in touch with the Red Army through a contact derived from Amsterdam—it is a very international affair. In under a year the group had accessed and gone through a number of highly ...

The Liverpool Echo has the article on its website – see link below:- That we northerners are pretty much all sceptics about investment in the north is probably a given, after all we've seen precious little of it for generations and through many governments. So it's really no surprise when you hear Northern Poorhouse as opposed to the 'correct' Powerhouse; folks just don't trust governments to deliver sustained investment in the north other than a light sprinkling of cash every now and then. Trouble is when government does send sixpence up the M6 some northern political leader gets far ...

Suddenly, everyone in the right of centre media is an expert on Irish politics – in their own minds anyhow. The fact that Irish politics means as much to the British centre-right all of a sudden is testament alone to how well they have played their hand in the Brexit negotiations so far – not that these centre-right Irish politics "experts" are self-aware enough to have gathered this much. The bad takes obviously support their Brexit position and have several common myths that run through them all. Here are the most prominent amongst them. Note: I myself am not an ...

Clive Wright, chief executive of Shropshire Council, has emailed council members and the county's MPs to describe the impact of Storm Dennis on the unitary area. I thought it would be useful to publish this more widely as a factual account of the explosive cyclogenesis that hit our county and many other areas. The current estimate is that 95 homes have been flooded across the county and at least 28 businesses. The count for Ludlow is 37 homes and three businesses. From front: Peter Nutting, Tim Gill and Clive Wright Flood relief funding is available for businesses and homes. I'll ...
