Second paragraph of third chapter:Matt had waltzed through his first year of junior high and begun his second with the hyperactive mood swings of puberty. He surrounded himself with girls from school and seemed to share their endless giggling fits as well as their PMS rages, and would go into a funk at the drop of a hat. Jocelyn had expressed her concern that Matt might come out of the closet this year or the next, and although Steve had raised his eyebrows at the idea he suspected Jocelyn was right. The idea alarmed him, not because either of them ...

Responding to reports that the Chancellor will use his Budget to spend £70 million on probation as part of the Government's bid to make Britain's streets safer, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson Daisy Cooper said:"Too many people feel unsafe in their own homes and walking down their own streets. The criminal justice system is failing to rehabilitate people, leading to more crimes and more victims."For far too long, the Conservatives have been so desperate to appear tough on crime that they have failed to properly invest in the things that help people build lives free from crime."The Government does need to ...

A famous Chinese idiom story is about Liu Bang agreeing on a truce with Xiang Yu; both then forging a treaty of brotherhood. In reality, it was a scheme against Xiang Yu, who is a better battle commander. Xiang let his guards down and was defeated by Liu. Thus, beginning the Han dynasty. The story is admired as a tactic and recognised with the Chinese idiom 「出爾反爾」, meaning "going back on one's words". Since signing the Joint Declaration which transferred sovereignty of Hong Kong from Britain to China, China has reneged her promises numerous times. The most salient perhaps is ...

In a clip born to go viral, Prince Harry is seen walking along a line of waiting participants in that way royals do. He skips past Boris, not bothering to shake his hand or say anything to the prime minister, going on to speak warmly to Baroness Scotland who stands to the PM's direct left. Boris' face tells it all – how much he hates being not liked. He is the natural life of the party type and finds it hard to cope with being treated with distain. The pain of being shunned by a senior member of the royal ...

This is the second of three articles on housing Huge profits are being made out of housing when the Government estimates 4,266 people are sleeping rough. For example Barratts made pre-tax profits in 2019 of £909.8m – even after paying their Chief Executive £3.6m. Nationwide made £833m after paying its Chief Executive £2.37m and the Government collected £9.3m in Stamp Duty. Brexit trade talks ...

The purpose of politics can be said to be to resolve conflicts among different groups in society that arise from conflicting economic and generational interests. Developing compromise solutions that can promote harmony and good societal relations are the raison d'être for political parties. The post-war welfare state delivering health and education services free at the point of use is such a compromise. So too is the social security safety net. There were weaknesses in the Beveridge plan, particularly around the problem of marrying universal benefits with widely varying levels of rents across the country. Societal changes since Beveridge's day have ...
