Look hard at the Conservative leaflets that have been pushed through your letterboxes. Do you see any mention of the purchase of the £51 million Shrewsbury shopping centres? £450 for every council tax payer? Of course not. The Conservatives pressured Shropshire Council into buying the retails units just before the market collapsed and that was before coronavirus. Before the pandemic, the shopping centres were providing the council with an annual return on investment of less than half a per cent. The centres were pushed through the council by Peter Nutting who has long seen himself as Mr Shrewsbury with the ...

"Cometh the hour, cometh the man," is what I wrote when Joe Biden was elected US President last November. I had a good feeling about the man because Mr Biden looked to be somebody who confronts the world as it really is, rather than on some projection based on conviction, as more partisan politicians do. ... Two very short works by Neil Gaiman, one illustrated by Mark Buckingham, the other inspired by scupltures by Lisa Snellings. Second frame of third story of Feeders & Eaters & other stories ("An Image to Maintain", in which Buckingham portrays himself on the phone to Gaiman): The title story is Gaiman's account of a spooky late-night encounter in a cafe (which has been dramatised); the second is about Alan Moore; and the third is a one-pager by Buckingham. Perhaps a little more refective on the nature of the artist's work than sometimes. Second paragraph of the third of the Sculpture ...

Britain's announcement of a £1 billion trade deal with India coincided with a thundering condemnation of that country by the British-Indian artist Sir Anish Kapoor in The Times. He writes: Sixty per cent of the population — 800 million people — live, or more accurately survive, in abject poverty and are forced into invisibility. The harshness of caste boundaries and endemic social segregation means they are the downtrodden of the earth and it matters not if they live or die. Britain is pursuing India for post-Brexit trade deals and as a strategic ally against China's expansion. By doing so, it ...

The Liberal Democrats have written to the Prime Minister calling for the UK to begin donating vaccines through the COVAX programme immediately. The letter, co-signed by all the party's MPs and spearheaded by Layla Moran, echoes calls the party made to join COVAX as part of a 'parallel rollout' back in February. With the situation in India now worsening, the urgency of the call has intensified. It also highlighted how aid cuts are making the global situation worse and called for a number of other proactive measures such as safely accelerating approval processes in regulatory bodies. In the letter, Liberal ...

I missed this when it came out last week, but this article in the Guardian from 27th April is well-worth a look. The paper reports on the conclusions of the joint committee on human rights that all 85,000-plus Covid fines issued in England during the pandemic should be reviewed, after more than a quarter of prosecutions in the first two months of the year for breaching the regulations were shown to have been wrongly brought. The joint committee believe the coronavirus regulations, which have been changed at least 65 times since March last year, were muddled, discriminatory and unfair: As ...

It's featured in Doctor Who, and the last person I heard making the claim was Jim Davidson. I don't know where the idea that it's wrong to call the UK's national flag the Union Jack comes from - on no evidemce. I suspect QI - but it's bollocks. If you don't believe me, talk to Cdr Bruce Nicolls OBE RN (Retd) of the Flag Institute: It is sometimes claimed that the Union Flag should be described as the Union Jack only when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From its earliest days, ...
