Second paragraph of third chapter:Yet even this I found that I failed at; for instead of sparkling aphorisms, fascinating conversation and news of current affairs, all the pages revealed each week was that I saw to the hens twice daily and grudgingly fulfilled my other tasks, was pleased when Mother made jam roly-poly and petulant when it was liver, read greedily, said my prayers dutifully, was chided frequently for mooning about and once a month suffered the Curse. For some reason I apparently put this on my wishlist, and my kind wife duly got it for my birthday in April. It's ...

As Membership Secretary for LDCRE, it's my job to get you to join LDCRE. If you just needed that reminder then click here – and welcome to the campaign! I should write something more. As Roderick Lynch, first Chair of LDCRE and a key driver behind the campaign, is prone to saying – the clue is in the name. We are not simply an SAO for members from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds – we are the SAO for members that want to Campaign for Race Equality. Of ALL creeds and colours, and every background. But I look at ...

"I have the Loyhargil - nothing can stop me now!" Celebrating today's release of Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 24 Blu-ray, I've been transported back to the time with a tune in my head that just won't stop: Nathan Jones by Bananarama, with a very different chorus. Doctor Who: The Collection - Season 24 Blu-ray cover: the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy), in cream jacket and hat, bearing spoons, framing the Rani and a set of monsters I've been trying to write something very serious and meaningful that ties in to the far end of Sylv as the Doctor. That's grinding ...

We see so many working people being treated poorly these days that it's come to be almost accepted that our fellow human beings, who happen to be employees, are simply expendable and worthy of little care. And I say that as an active trade unionist throughout my whole working life (1975 – 2017) where, in general, I saw working conditions getting worse rather than better. The only thing that seems to matter these days is the production of whatever form of widgets you can imagine; greater and greater efficiency is the ever strived-for goal but at what cost? Mental health ...

In 2019 Boris Johnson won a landslide victory. It left him with total power to inflict a heartless Brexit. Our young people face barriers if they want to study or work in Europe. Many people have found their lives badly affected. How did this happen? What lessons can be learned from the 2019 election? Firstly, Boris offered certainty after several years of Brexit indecision. Voters knew what they would get if they voted for him. Some 'remain' voters just wanted things settled. Secondly our electoral system rewards big parties. The Tories won only 44% of votes, but they were the ...

Matthew Pennell says those arguing for a Progressive Alliance in the Batley and Spen by-election don't understand the seat. I'm a massive track and field freak and I learnt an important life lesson from an Athletics Weekly editorial a while back - it talked about having a 'no short cuts' approach to the sport. This wasn't, as you'd expect, about not taking performance enhancing drugs, but weight loss. It's known that getting on the Slimfast can boost your performance in the short term but what you gain in speed you lose in strength so you're far more likely to get ...

The following temporary traffic order comes from the City Council. There's a bit of background to this one! The work is to be undertaken by Scottish Water to repair a collapsed manhole in the middle of the street in Ancrum Drive. I am grateful to the City Council who, at my request following concerns from residents when the temporary cover moved away from the hole, attended to move it back over the substantial hole in the road. The original date for the work was not until 26th July and I viewed that as totally unacceptable - a month away - ...

If Matt Hancock thought that his resignation as the English Health Secretary was going to be a clean break with the past then he has another think coming. The Independent reports that he is facing an investigation after using a personal email account to conduct government affairs, in breach of UK guidelines. It is alleged that Hancock regularly used a private email account for government dealings since March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic began, thereby concealing information from officials and potentially from the public: The disclosure was reportedly revealed in minutes from a meeting between senior officials at the Department ...
