Lydiate Footpath No.5

I've been asked by a couple of people about how long this particular footpath will be closed for so I've been chasing things up via Sefton Council who are responsible for public rights of way in the Borough. For those unfamiliar with Lydiate's public footpath network, the path runs from the side of Church View Farm on Southport Road, across the fields and it comes out on Eagar Lane. You can see the path here on Lydiate's public rights of way map as Lyd5:- Sefton highway engineers tell me that they've received an update from the contractor who will be ...

In an interview with ITV News Kirsty Williams, Lib Dem Senedd Member since 1999 and former Welsh Education Minister, reveals the reasons why she stood down this May. We can't embed the clip but you can view it here. She says: I think for me it became increasingly more and more difficult to protect my family, not from the threats of violence that we're talking about but the general level of abuse. When my children were small they weren't on social media, they didn't have access to those things, but now it's pretty difficult to keep them away from that. ...

Now is a very interesting time to be a macro-economist. The shock arising from the covid-19 pandemic is unprecedented in its extent (barring world wars, maybe) and its economic effects. Government responses, with very loose monetary policy combined with generous fiscal measures, is similarly unprecedented. The latter is remarkable in that its generosity is far ... Andy Haldane, about to leave the Bank of England where he has long been its respected chief economist, told the audience at Policy Exchange, the Conservative think tank, on Monday June 28th that 'Levelling Up' should now be the central issue in our domestic politics. That's a radical statement, which should make Liberal Democrats think carefully about how we develop our response to this challenge. Haldane pointed out that there are only two EU member states where inequality between the richest and poorest regions are as high as in the UK: Romania and Poland. He noted how economic (and social) ...

As if there was not already enough controversy over how valuable Covid contracts were awarded, some to Tory donors and friends of Ministers, some apparently without a proper due process, the Guardian reports that a health minister is facing fresh calls to lose his job after it emerged that he apparently failed to declare a week's worth of meetings with companies who went on to be granted £1bn contracts. The paper says that Lord Bethell was already under pressure for using his private email account for ministerial business, and for sponsoring a parliamentary pass for Hancock's aide Gina Coladangelo, with ...

A number of residents have asked if the City Council arrange to clean the road edges/gullies in Bellefield Avenue. This follows on from some other local streets in the Perth Road Lanes having the gully cleaner visit recently. I took this up with the council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have received the following positive response : "Bailie Macpherson (The local inspector) has asked the gully machine to visit the gullies in Bellefield Avenue."

The Joy of Six 1015

"When the Anglican Church declared its schism from the Pope in Rome, it unilaterally transferred from Rome to Canterbury the power to appoint bishops, but seems to have forgotten to provide the Archbishop of Canterbury with the power to fire them." Gavin Ashenden examines the crisis that has enveloped the diocese of Winchester. Tim Farron opposes the Lakeland Clearances. Charlotte Armitage and and Kenneth Murray talk about growing up in the care system in Scotland: "My records are full of conversations like this. Disputes about whether claims I was making were fact or questioning my motives in a way which ...
