The Best Related Work category has been on the Hugo ballot every year since 1980. In 28 of those 41 years, it went to a published monograph or essay collection about science fiction and/or fantasy or related themes. The exceptions were as follows:Popular science books won twice, in 1981 (Carl Sagan: Cosmos) and 1986 (Tom Weller: Science Made Stupid, which is somewhat satirical rather than factual);Art books won five times, in 1988 (Michael Whelan: Worlds of Wonder), 1992 (The World of Charles Addams), 2001 (Greetings from Earth: The Art of Bob Eggleton), 2002 (The Art of Chesley Bonestell) and 2004 ...

Sad news from Newcastle about a very popular colleague in the Liberal Democrats: It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the death of our friend and colleague Anita Lower. She will be sorely missed by many in local government, in Newcastle and further afield, and by her constituents who she has served with great commitment over many years. Cllr Anita Lower was first elected to the Council in 1994, serving continuously as a councillor since then until her death. She was councillor for Blakelaw ward for 10 years and then councillor for Castle ward from 2004 to 2021. ...

Jane Bonham Carter, the Lib Dem Lords Spokesperson for DCMS has attacked government plans to sell off Channel 4, which "was created to be a disruptive, innovative force in UK broadcasting." The Conservative plans to try and sell off Channel 4 are disgraceful and will diminish the organisation. By trying to put the broadcaster into private hands, they are jeopardising the huge range of diverse content that only Channel 4 produces – including the Paralympics. We know that private owners will push programmes that make the most money, meaning many quality shows could be scrapped if they don't make enough ...

Keeping it in-house

Faced with the possible embarrassment of an independent investigation into government contracts and lobbying involving a number of senior Conservative politicians including the former prime minister David Cameron, the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, the MP and former health secretary Matt Hancock and the peer Francis Maude, Boris Johnson appears to have taken the safe option. The solicitor he has appointed to run it is a former Conservative party member who stood as a council candidate. That does not mean of course that the inquiry will be compromised nor that the chair will not do a good job, clearly Nigel Boardman is ...

The news is mixed. Coronavirus cases are beginning to rise sharply in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin. We have new cases here in Ludlow. We are not yet seeing the levels of infection witnessed during the second wave. But infections can grow rapidly among unvaccinated populations and Shropshire is witnessing a accelerating number of cases very week. At beginning of June, seven news cases were identified daily. By the end of June, that had grown to 63 cases a day. If that were to continue, we could be seeing more than 500 new cases a day by the end of ...

I heard Elvis Presley's (Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame playing in the Co-op today. But I was 17 when the King died and to me then he was just some fat, old bloke, so I have chosen a song a Smiths that was inspired by it. Smiths on Guitar quotes Johnny Marr on the evolution of that song: "Rusholme Ruffians came about because my parents used to play 'Marie's The Name' by Elvis Presley and I liked the chord change. "That was blatantly done. Morrissey said to me, 'Let's do a song about the fair,' and for some reason ...

So, three by-elections have been held in England and the three main English Parties have come out with 1 each. It's a bit more complicated than that of course. The Lib Dem one was a gain, the Tories gained one ... Continue reading →

In this weekend's review, Tom Arms looks at the dilemmas that faced Joe Biden as he ordered an attack on pro-Iranian militia in Iraq. In another dilemma, Biden could hold up any talk of a UK-US trade deal if he thinks that the Good Friday Agreement is threatened or damaged by Boris Johnson's tactics on Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, prosecutors are getting closer to Donald Trump. The charging of a Trump Organisation employee could provide more information about Trump's financial dealing. The organisations' assets will also be frozen and banks are likely to call in their loans. former South African President ...
