Alex Cole-Hamilton has tonight announced he is standing to be Scottish Lib Dem leader. The contest is taking place after Willie Rennie announced he was standing down two weeks ago. Alex throwing his hat into the ring is the most surprising thing since the sun rose in the east this morning. He announced the news in video posted on Twitter: Some news from me: [IMG: 👇] pic.twitter.com/EB3CMyNktM — Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP [IMG: 🔶] (@agcolehamilton) July 27, 2021 He is brilliant on all the touchstone liberal issues of human rights, civil liberties and social justice. Second paragraph of third chapter:Kramer had respectfully offered Lethbridge-Stewart the front passenger seat. She sat in the back with Sally and Owain, pointing out landmarks and catching up on the latest about the wedding plans and Sally's new appointment to Edinburgh. Lethbridge-Stewart had to admit to himself that he was mildly pleased - at first - by Kramer's deference. Then the driver somehow managed to slalom across four lanes of traffic, whipping into a taxi-only lane and braking with a screech of tires as he joined the long line of exhaust-belching vehicles headed for the Queensboro Bridge. Only then, removing ...

Our beloved former leader Sir Vince Cable took to a new right wing tv news channel last night to have a pint with Nigel Farage. During that interview he basically said that we shouldn't call the brutality that the Chinese authorities are inflicting on to the Uyghur population genocide. He said: "The use of the word genocide is not right here. There is terrible human rights abuse in many countries of minorities and China is one of them and they have abused those minorities for sure but calling it genocide is hyping the language." I wonder if he would consider ...

A common refrain heard from the left of Labour during the Corbyn era was that 'left-wing policies are popular'. This was a reference to the fact that when polled, policies such as rail nationalisation turned out to have widespread approval. Yet this was not the silver bullet the Corbynistas always thought it was because it immediately prompts the question: if Labour policies are incredibly popular, then why aren't Labour doing better electorally? The water is muddied somewhat by the fact that a lot of policies which could be considered rightfully left-wing really are popular, but other left-wing policies are certainly ...

We have had extreme temperatures and now flash floods, overwhelming several London tube stations and two of the capital's hospitals. Across the country we are relying on aging drainage systems and other infrastructure that was largely constructed by the victorians to cope with weather patterns they weren't designed for. And despite decades where we have been warned of these consequences of climate change our government has failed to do anything about it. The Guardian reports on the views of scientists, who say flash flooding of the type seen in London this weekend will become a more common occurrence as the ...

Matthew Pennell asks if the Liberal Democrats are in the business of building walls as well as knocking them down. The media is obsessed with presenting events as dramatic and unprecedented, therefore it reported on the weakening of Labour's hold on industrial heartland seats with alacrity. You've probably seen the phrase 'Red Wall' in print a thousand times since the 2019 General Election. Two years on and it has a generals-fighting-the-previous-battle quality to it. All walls can fall down and we're now seeing the cracks in the Southern Blue Wall that Liberal Democrats were hoping in vain to chip away ...
