Today Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scots attending big outdoor and indoor events from later this month will need vaccine passports to get in – unless they are exempt because they can't have the vaccine. The BBC reports that you will have to show evidence of vaccination or exemption to access: Nightclubs and adult entertainment venues. Unseated indoor live events, with more than 500 people in the audience. Unseated outdoor live events, with more than 4,000 people in the audience. Any event, of any nature, which has more than 10,000 people in attendance. So, does this mean if I want to ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:"You know," he said, "if I were a sub-editor on anything but a distinguished literary paper, I should say you were playing with me — playing fast and loose."Williams was one of the other Inklings apart from J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and for some reason I decided to start reading him with this work, though it is not his most popular (according to both LibraryThing and Goodreads, that would be Descent into Hell). I confess I did not get much out of it. Platonic archetypes begin to appear disruptively in today's world (England in 1931) ...

It's time to look again at our policy on drugs, a topic which we can 'own,' which will get us noticed In the media and, which will differentiate us from Labour and Conservatives. I'm not talking about cannabis, recreational use has become almost mainstream, is more or less ignored by the police and is certainly far, far less harmful than either tobacco and /or alcohol, -that is established medical fact. The medicinal uses of cannabis are now being acknowledged and established, even if there is a long way to go on further research and getting the medical supply chain organised. ...

I am writing this because my liberal instincts appear to be in conflict. But probably not. Let me explain. First, I am a fan of running the economy hot, and think this can be good for productivity and helping the less well-off. Second, I am pro-economics, and happen to think that means being in favourContinue reading "Shortages are really not such a good thing"

There's a new book of political alternative histories out called Prime Minister Priti: And other things that never happened. One of its editors is a Liberal Democrat. So who better to have back on Never Mind The Bar Charts than that editor... Duncan Brack. Listen to us discuss how Eric Joyce having one drink too many caused Brexit (perhaps), what the appeal is of political counter-factuals, our favourite chapters from this book and how one change in the events of 1923 could have led to a very different political history for the Liberal Party. Feedback very welcome, and do share ...

I suppose a government that is fundamentally opposed to letting asylum seekers and refugees into our country can't be blamed when they get it wrong on a cohort they have to admit, but it doesnt help those individuals fleeing the Taliban nor does it do anything for the authorities tasked with the resettlement process. The Independent reports that the Home Office's plan to resettle Afghan refugees has come under fire from local councils who say they have been left "scrambling" to meet the urgent needs of new arrivals due to a "lack of clarity" from central government. The paper says ...

The Liberal Democrats are calling on the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to immediately fly to the countries neighbouring Afghanistan once he has finished appearing in front of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. He must go to help secure safe border crossing for British nationals and refugees. The call comes as today, the Government announced sending 15 officials to Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The German Foreign Minister has flown out to meet with his counterparts in these countries already, to ensure German nationals can escape the Taliban. Layla Moran MP, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, said: "It is time for ...

While even the basic statement I'm about to start off with is still somewhat contentious in certain circles, anyone who isn't trying one on has to admit that immigration played a large part in the vote to leave the EU in 2016. The desire to end freedom of movement – at least, in the direction of people coming from the continent to Britain – was undoubtably one of the big factors in the referendum going the way that it did. What no one wants to talk about is why the desire to end FOM became so strong amongst a certain, ...

I recently received complaints about the poor road condition in Minto Place near the junction with Richmond Terrace. I raised this with the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership and have now had this helpful feedback : "The Road Inspector for this area has identified the defect that requires a repair. He has identified it as a Category 3 defect which will be repaired within 30 working days."

Thanks to a nomination from a reader, the Leicester Mercury wins today's Headline of the Day Award. And the story beneath it is worth reading too: A young Nazi sympathizer who downloaded bomb-making instructions has been sentenced to read classic novels including Pride and Prejudice instead. Judge Timothy Spencer QC told Ben John, 21, he could stay out of prison as long as he steered clear of white-supremacy literature and and read books and plays by Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy and Charles Dickens. The former De Montfort University student will have to return to court every four months ...
