In his speech on the 31st August justifying the American withdrawal from Afghanistan President Biden used these crucial sentences: "This decision about Afghanistan is not just about Afghanistan. It's about ending an era of major military operations to remake other countries." Let us hope so. Let us hope other countries follow suit. There have been many terrible things which have happened in the World since the end of the Second World War in 1945 to "remake" other countries of force them to revert to a former status quo.. The victorious Western Powers have not been responsible for all of them, ...

A Woman in Berlin

CONTENT WARNING: DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL ASSAULT Second paragraph of third chapter (Sunday 22 April 1945): Halsbrecherischer Treppenabstieg. A breakneck rush down the stairs. I was scared to death when my heel got caught on the edge of a step. I barely managed to grab hold of the railing in time. My knees went weak, but I went on, heart ...

This Tory government's failure to secure a proper post-Brexit trade deal with the EU is costing the country dear both in terms of jobs and our balance of trade. As the Guardian reports, exports of food and drink to the EU have suffered a "disastrous" decline in the first half of the year because of Brexit trade barriers, with sales of beef and cheese hit hardest. They say that Food and Drink Federation (FDF) producers lost £2bn in sales, a dent in revenue that could not be compensated for by the increased sales in the same period to non-EU countries ...

Three principal authority council by-elections this week. all in northern England. A full slate too of Liberal Democrat candidates, up on the last time these seats were contested and making it three weeks in a row now of there being a Lib Dem candidate for every vacancy. That's a welcome sign of our grassroots recovery to go with rising poll ratings. Our first result tonight is the first of two from Calderdale MBC. Ryburn Ward Conservative 1188 53.6% (+25.4) Labour 798 36.0% (+24.8) Green 163 7.4% (+0.9) LIB DEM Peter Wilcock 66 3.0% (-0.9) Conservative GAIN from Independent pic.twitter.com/rAnVhBG766 — ...

Responding to Sajid Javid's call for a 2% rise in national insurance to pay for social care. Munira Wilson MP, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Health and Social Care, said: "This is an unfair and unjust way to reform social care. It will hit the youngest and the lowest paid whilst protecting the wealthiest. "Sajid Javid is putting the burden on the same people who have been hardest hit by the pandemic, and Boris Johnson has today broken his manifesto promise not to raise taxes. "Has it really taken all this time, to make a decision to rip-off the people who ...

In this article, Tracey Huffer writes about the growing threat to Ludlow Youth Centre. That threat began in 2014, when Philip Dunne MP and the then portfolio holder for young people, Gwilym Butler, visited a youth club session to brief the youngsters about the decision to convert half the building into offices. Rarely have I seen two politicians so out of their comfort zone and that evening reduced the political stature of both men. But that was the start of Shropshire Council's campaign to reduce the use of Ludlow Youth Centre and now, we fear, to close it all together. ...

The Joy of Six 1024

"Biden labelling Afghanistan 'the graveyard of empires' is, at best, historically illiterate and, at worst, utterly self-serving. It not only negates thousands of years of Afghanistan's history as a flourishing centre of civilisation, but also - in an act of supreme imperial hubris - shifts the blame for U.S. failures there onto the land and people of Afghanistan themselves." Alexander Hainy-Khaleel takes issue with the Western perceptions of the country. "As in many other countries, most of the research funding in Norway comes from the government. Thereby, the government funds all stages of research production, but must then pay again ...
