Labour's 2015 general election candidate for Harborough later joined the Conservative Party. Could its 2019 candidate be about to go the same way? The Express & Star reports that Celia Hibbert has been suspended indefinitely from Wolverhampton's ruling Labour group. A letter from that group's whip details the allegations against her, including: It is alleged that in the previous weeks, you have approached the Conservative opposition in the council and asked whether you could cross the floor and join their group. The paper says Conservatives in the city have denied that Councillor Hibbert has attempted to join them. And it ...

SALC: the Board meeting!

I have to admit that I've rather gotten behind with my reporting of events. You know how it is, you look at the blog and think "I really ought to write something" but never quite get round to it. I ought to do better... But enough mumbling, and on with events. I've now served a whole year on the Board of the Suffolk Association of Local Councils and, having been re-elected by Mid Suffolk South Area last month, I got to return for another term. The first item of business? Elections. We've got a new Chair, Andrew Lewis, from Walberswick ...

The Guardian Oct 2013 – 'Labour will be tougher than Tories on benefits, promises new welfare chief' – The article (see link below) was commenting on the views of Rachel Reeves MP; she's now Labour's Shadow Chancellor – I must admit I've had a big downer on Reeves ever since October 2013 because, in my view, desperate poverty, which neither Labour nor Tories are willing to address, is actually just as much if not more so within the ignored part of our population, the non-working poor. The reason Labour and Tories ignore the non-working poor is that they're significantly ...

590 days of plague

Holding. Edited to add: Well, that's embarrassing. I had carefully planned out my day so that I would do an astute update here to go live later in the evening, but in fact my "holding" entry went live when I was still in the office. It was a very annoying day, coming at the end of a lovely visit from my sister C and her daughter S. We totally failed to take any pictures with C in them, which is a shame as it was her birthday on Monday and we went out for dinner on Sunday. We also went ...

Yesterday the Chancellor missed the chance to avoid a cost of living crisis which is causing sleepless nights for families up and down the country. People need support. Instead, they got tax hikes, benefit cuts and no answer to skyrocketing bills. [IMG: ⬇] https://t.co/9ajEwxfvaO — Liberal Democrats (@LibDems) October 28, 2021

The Liberal Democrats have said the Chancellor is "living on another planet" after he claimed on interviews this morning that changes to the Universal Credit taper amount to cutting taxes. It comes as analysis from the Resolution Foundation finds that the average household will see their tax bills rise by £3,000 by 2027. Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "This Chancellor is living on another planet if he thinks the British people are going to believe this spin. This underlines how completely out of touch he is, if he thinks we are going to buy this nonsense, especially ...

It wasn't only Covid that killed people before their time. In just the four years after the Coalition between our party and the Conservatives was formed in 2010, the spending squeeze may have caused 57,550 more deaths in England than would have been expected. Research from the Centre for Health Economics at York University reached this conclusion after studying the cuts in Government expenditure between 2010 and 2015. The research has been reported in the online journal BMJ Open. The research revealed that real spending on social care and public health rose between 2001-02 and 2009-10, but fell between 2010-11 ...

Contrary to some of the headlines, yesterday's British Budget was an austerity budget. Its aim was to bring current spending and taxes into balance in three years, with a capital deficit restricted to 3% of GDP. With the current budget deficit at around 11% of GDP, that is a sharp contraction. The Institute of Fiscal ... Continue reading Now is the time for austerity

With so much media and political attention on social care there is a danger that social work, which is a very undervalued resource, may be further marginalised. This article attempts to demonstrate that social work and social workers are vital to a "mending" rather than a "minding" service. In the late 1960s and early 1970s social work was regarded as a valuable resource and social workers seen as "agents of change". Since then, social workers have been increasingly regarded as "gate keepers" assessing the eligibility for practical help and rationing of services. The Seebohm Report which led to the establishment ...

The wrong signals

With the climate change conference almost upon us, one would have thought that the UK Government, who after all are hosting it, to at least make an effort in setting the right tone. Instead they introduced measures in yesterday's budget that effectively offer two fingers to those seeking to avert global warming. As the Independent reports, the Chancellor used his budget to scrap a planned fuel duty rise for the twelfth year in a row, effecctively offering a subsidy for drivers of polluting vehicles. The paper says the move, which will cost the taxpayer nearly £8bn over the next five ...

Connexus, the social housing association which absorbed South Shropshire Housing, is about to start a major refurbishment of housing on Sandpits Avenue. In all, 77 homes will be refurbished with new flooring, insulation and heating. Tracey Huffer, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow East says: "It is great news that this work is getting underway at last. These houses are far behind modern standards but they are sound enough to last several decades once they have been refurbished. "The work will be disruptive but it will be worth the inconvenience to bring these aging properties up to modern standards. The properties will ...
