The third of the Black Archive books is by L.M. Myles, who I last saw at the fantastic Gallifrey One convention last year. Here she is in the bar on the first night, in the thick of things. When I first watched The Ambassadors of Death in 2007, I wrote:Jon Pertwee's first season in 1970 was certainly his best, but also in a lot of ways quite unlike any other season before or since. The Ambassadors of Death is Who as James Bond-ish adventure story with lots and lots of shootouts and fighting, and aliens who can kill at a ...

With a by-election coming for the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, the local Liberal Democrats have selected a candidate: The Liberal Democrats have selected local campaigner and veteran James Barker as their candidate for the North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner election to be held on 6th May. James is a City of York Councillor, representing the Rural West York ward since his election in 2019, when he overturned a huge Conservative majority to win his seat from the former York Conservative party leader. James' background is in the armed forces, having joined the RAF as an Officer ...

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have accused the Conservative government of levelling down Wales in Wednesday's budget, stating that measures announced by the Government do not even come close to replacing lost EU funding. Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader, Jane Dodds MS, stated: We are now seriously beginning to feel the consequences of this Conservative Government's obsessive Brexit ideology and the harm it is inflicting on the Welsh economy. In addition to acute labour shortages, supply shortages and price increases we now have significant evidence provided to us by the OBR showing the damage Brexit is doing to our economy. This can ...

Bullshit budget

As a well-brought-up choirboy I learnt to avoid vulgar language, so was a little bit discombobulated to read the Guardian's headline "Chancellor to strike bullshit note in budget" last Wednesday morning. A second glance revealed that it was actually a "bullish" note, but I'm pretty convinced the first reading wasn't far wrong.. By skilful presentation Rishi Sunak has managed to present himself as competent and "nice" to Tories and much of the press, but some of his earlier key decisions have been deeply flawed. To finance our social care services by a hike in the rates of national Insurance contritions ...

Prior to 1974 this was known as the Mayor's Coal Fund and gifts of coal were distributed to those eligible. Each year local businesses and individuals make donations to the Mayor's Christmas Fund and payments are then sent in January to residents aged 75 and over who fall ...

Those of you who know me well will, perhaps, be slightly surprised by this news given my evident lack of children. But then, that's the thing about "second time around". Not only are you hopefully a bit better for the lessons you learned from a previous failure (in my case), but you benefit from the experiences of your new life partner. Apart from the obvious general loveliness that is Ros, there are my two stepchildren, to whom I have become the evil stepfather they never knew they needed. In fairness, they've been generous and welcoming, which is not always how ...

Eight principal authority council by-elections this week, but very disappointingly only three Liberal Democrat candidates. That's the same number as the last time these seats were up. There are many different stories behind missing candidates, including hard-pressed volunteers doing their best. But the overall picture is a big missed opportunity for the party. There are many benefits of standing even in contests that we know we aren't going to win, as I've set out here. Perhaps most important is the impact of every single voter seeing a ballot paper without the Liberal Democrats on it. That sends the wrong message ...

We already know that fishermen feel let down and betrayed by Brexit after unrealistic and undeliverable promises made to them by Boris Johnson and his brexiteer chums inevitably hit the rocks. But now the true consequences of the UK's imtransigience is starting to hit the fishing industry with both UK and French ministers digging in and making increasingly wild threats against the other. As the BBC reports, the UK environment secretary, George Eustice has suggested Britain would retaliate if France imposes sanctions in an escalating row over post-Brexit fishing rights, while foreign secretary, Liz Truss has summoned the French ambassador ...

Numerous residents have been in touch with me in recent weeks about the fact that the lift in Blackness Library has been out of action - a real issue for library users who cannot manage the stairs to get up to the reading/meeting rooms upstairs. I contacted the Head of Libraries at Leisure and Culture Dundee about this and she has updated me as follows : "There is a problem with the doors and the lift engineers have advised against using the lift. They were in the library last week and told our librarian that they are trying to source ...

Aberavon and Neath Liberal Democrats are calling for action in order to reduce the risk of spiking in Neath Port Talbot county borough. The call comes after concern continues to grow over the reported increase in spiking incidents across Wales and England. Figures from the BBC revealed a rise in recorded cases of drink-spiking, with more than 2,600 reported incidents in England and Wales since 2015. This includes a worrying rise in the number of incidents of "injection spiking", where a victim is injected with drugs using a small needle without their consent. 72 per cent of the alleged victims ...
