COVID, day 8

Nothing drastic to report, after yesterday's exciting adventure. I am 54 years old, and have not had to spend a night in hospital since my parents brought me home from the maternity ward. That record still stands, just. The good news is that my appetite has returned - I had the same dinner as the rest of the family, for the first time in a week - and without going into detail, my digestive system seems to be back on track as well. These are the first real upticks I have had since I went down with the bug, but ...

There is the clatter of the letter box. Among the bills and magazines is a white envelope that contains the postal voting form. That is happening right now in North Shropshire. Postal votes are critical to us winning this by-election. And we can win this by-election. We have the right candidate. The right team. But in this huge constituency, we need people on the ground and on the phones to persuade people that this does not have to remain a true blue seat. There is a lot of talk about the Lib Dems having to climb a mountain to win ...

Full title: Building Healthy Boundaries: An Over-giver's Guide to Knowing When to Say 'Yes' and How to Say 'No' in Relationships. Second paragraph of third chapter:The one topic that I get asked about time and time again from my clients is how to set boundaries and how to say 'No'. My dearest wish is that you will read this book and it will give you both hope that you too can set healthy boundaries and it will give you practical steps to take to help you achieve that.A very succinct (28 pages) self-help book for people who have difficulty with ...

Whose place is it anyway? I've long puzzled over the phrase, 'knowing your place' – most frequently deployed to (uh oh, here's another) 'put someone in their place'. Both express a need to assume some authority over those who should be 'put back in their box' whilst those in command carry on being commanding despite inconvenient 'un-called for' reports. Having long retired from what was then a deeply hierarchical organisation modelled on the military (and one that struggled with innovation), I now much prefer the delight of locally talented pools of people who really do know their places and appreciate ...

With the news this morning dominated by fears of an alcohol shortage over the Christmas period (it really is a good time to be teetotal), Ministers are at least breathing a sigh of relief that a anticipated dearth of turkey carcasses might be avoided. The Independent reports that the chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, Steve Barclay, has had assurances from the British Poultry Council that there would "definitely" be enough turkeys for Christmas: After months of pressure, the government relaxed immigration rules in September, making 5,500 visas available for foreign workers as a temporary measure to help the meat-processing ...

I am fine (ish). I spent five hours last night in the local hospital, but they released me without immediate need for further treatment, so I am back at home again. Late yesterday evening, my pulse oximeter was giving a reading of 92%, which is below ideal, and I had a fever. Anne is a doctor's daughter, checked the official Belgian clinical guidance, and got me to call the duty doctor who recommended that we go straight to hospital. So I had five somewhat dazed hours on a comfortable enough bed, being prodded, pricked and scanned; blood tests, EKG, lung ...

Today is White Ribbon Day, which marks the start of 16 days of action to end men's violence against women and girls. White Ribbon Day – 25th November. #AllMenCan make a difference to end men's violence against women. #MakeThePromise #WhiteRibbonDay pic.twitter.com/wvBuvxnwQP — White Ribbon UK (@WhiteRibbon_UK) November 24, 2021 #AllMenCan is the hashtag this year. As the organisers explain: It was developed for us in March when the murder of Sarah Everard brought women's experience of men's violence to the forefront of everyone's minds. It also opened up so many conversations about men taking action and making a stand. We ...

Residents will recall that, earlier this year, I raised with the Roads Maintenance Partnership the issue of the poor road surface at the southern end of Union Place calling for the road to be resurfaced as it was in poor condition. I am pleased to say this section of the street was resurfaced earlier this month as the "before", "during" and "after" photos indicate :
