The Joy of Six 1048

"In Sussex, the Liberal Democrat district councillor Ruth Fletcher has complained about how footpaths and bike tracks were removed from a proposed housing development in Horsham after police objections." Phineas Harper says police use of the Secured by Design initiative is damaging British cities and robbing them of greenery and public amenities while promoting fear. Barbara Ortutay and Amanda Seitz remind us Twitter has been down the "free speech" road favoured by Elon Musk before and it didn't end well. Milli Hill argues that concern over The Family Sex Show is proper safeguarding of children not a moral panic. "In ...

Evan Harris didn't just make a statement to court as his claim against The Sun and the News of the World was settled, he made one outside court too. And here it is. In settling Evan Harris's claim, the owner of the papers, News Group Newspapers, made no admission of liability.

It's time again to see what Rutland's most celebrated fictional peer was saying 30 years ago. I did start this feature a while ago but, what with one thing and another, it was not possible to continue it. Here, however, is an extract from Lord Bonkers' Diary in the May 1992 issue of Liberator (no. 204). As we join the old boy, he is reflecting on the result of the recent general election. Saturday Perusal of the morning's newspapers brings a little cheer. Painful as our losses were, we can take in pride in some results Mr Paul Tyler, who ...

After more than 20 years on Broad Street in Ludlow, Golden Moments is threatened with closure. An application has been submitted to convert the property into a house (22/01790/FUL; 22/01791/LBC). The application is from a neighbour, who owns the freehold on Golden Moments and town house next door. He wishes to return the streetscene "to a more quiet residential setting". I am appalled by this application. Golden Moments is a popular venue. That does of course mean there will sometimes be noise of people arriving and leaving but it is not a raucous establishment. I can't recall a complaint about ...

Dalai Lama once said: "If you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new". As a practising Christian, I was delighted (and a bit worried!) when I was invited by the Focolare community in London to give a talk on how faith relates to politics. A lot of people would say today: "I don't do both"! However for some, both faith and politics go hand in hand. Our political choices are guided by our religion or faith affiliation. Our beliefs often become our moral compass, which "dictates" in many cases ...

Ed Davey appeared on BBC One Sunday Morning yesterday. Interviewed by Sophie Raworth, he spoke about the cost of living, the need for tax cuts, keeping our nuclear deterrent until multilateral disarmament can be agreed and the forthcoming local elections and by-elections. He firmly denied the Lib Dems have a deal with Labour to squeeze the Tories out of some seats. Full transcript Sophie Raworth: Listening to all of that was the leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey. Good morning. How long do you think these inflation pressures are going to last? Years? A decade? More? Ed Davey: Well, ...

The Guardian reports on Liberal Democrat research that has found that untreated sewage was discharged into England's coastal bathing waters for more than 160,000 hours last year. This not just confined to England, as there are a similar problems in Wales, though here it is the Welsh Labour Government that is responsible for regulation. This is backed up by Figures collated by the campaign group Top of the Poops, which reveal that including the bathing waters in Wales, water companies released untreated sewage for 217,804 hours. The paper says that data compiled by the party using Environment Agency figures on ...

I'm old enough to remember the 1992-97 Major administration, which fell apart amidst scandal, misfortune and incompetence. Admittedly, it was incompetence which paled in comparison to that of the current mob, but many are beginning to draw the same conclusion, i.e. that this is a rotten government, simply needing a hard enough push to fall apart. Unfortunately, I'm also old enough to remember 1992, when it looked like the Conservatives would lose, only for the electorate to conclude that they weren't quite ready to do the deed. But April was a sorry month for the more thoughtful Conservatives, with one ...

The average family is facing a £5,550 tax hike over the next decade as a result of Conservative tax rises, new research commissioned by the Liberal Democrats has revealed. The Liberal Democrats are calling on Boris Johnson to scrap the tax hikes and bring in an emergency tax cut in the Queen's Speech, to help families struggling with the cost of living crisis. The research by the House of Commons Library finds that even after Rishi Sunak's promised cut to income tax in 2024, families will still be left poorer by around £600 a year. The analysis is based on ...
