Responding to the Government's announcement that the Plug-in Car Grant will no longer be available for new electric cars, Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson Sarah Olney MP said: "It beggars belief that this out of touch Government is scrapping these grants for new cars while petrol and diesel prices are soaring and electric cars remain unaffordable for so many. "Britain is gripped by a cost of living emergency where families are struggling to fill up at the pumps. We should be slashing VAT on electric vehicles, not cutting the Plug-In Car Grant. "This is the wrong move at the wrong time. ...

Responding to the tweets from the Government's new cost of living Tsar, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Christine Jardine MP said: "It's a damning indictment of this Prime Minister that even his new cost of living adviser doesn't think he's up to the task of running this country. "This Government under Boris Johnson's dismal leadership has completely failed to get a grip on the cost of living emergency that has left families struggling to get by. "Boris Johnson has got a track record of failing to listen to his 'tsars', so while ignorance may truly be bliss for this embarrassment of ...

The Liberal Democrats transport spokesperson Sarah Olney has written to transport secretary Grant Shapps accusing the government of sitting on its hands over the proposed rail strikes. This, the letter says, is because the government hopes the strikes will keep Lib Dem activists away from the Tiverton and Honiton by-election. The Independent report quotes some of letter:"It is becoming clearer by the day why you have chosen to let these strikes go ahead," Ms Olney said in a letter to the transport secretary. "This is part of a cynical and desperate political game by the Conservative party to help Boris ...

Last night The year is 1971 posted these TV listing from Tuesday 15 June of that year, pointing out that: Last week saw the last of the first series of And Mother Makes Three, this Tuesday it is replaced with the start of the fourth series of Father Dear Father. But for some reason my attention was caught by the late-night programme on Thames: 11.30 Living Architects: Lord Llewelyn-Davies Llewelyn-Davies? Could he be related to the Llewelyn-Davies boys who were adopted by the dramatist J.M. Barrie. This was relationship depicted in the film Finding Neverland, where Barrie was played by ...

If you are planning on going to Brighton to Conference from 17-20 September, you have just one day left to register at the Early Bird rate of £75. We would strongly recommend that you do it tonight if you can. The screams you can hear faintly in the distance come from those members of the LDV team who are finding that their previous log-in details don't work and they have to register all over again. This Conference gives the Lib Dem family its first chance to get together since Bournemouth in 2019 so it's worth going for that reason alone. ...

The shameful killing of 51 year-old Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh happened a month ago. Most likely she was shot by an Israeli sniper, with initial claims by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) that a stray Palestinian bullet might have hit her having been largely discredited. An Israeli investigation is under way, but has provided no answers yet. A human tragedy for her family and the Palestinian people, Abu Akleh's killing follows that of Jamal Khashoggi, callously dispatched by Saudi Arabia in 2018, and according to the Palestinian Authority, the deaths of 45 other Palestinian journalists killed since 2000. If ...

I'm an admirer of Frank Lampard, as both a Chelsea player and a Chelsea manager, so I liked this observation by Dan Jackson in a piece on the backgrounds of England's Euro 2020 squad: Although the class profile of football supporters has changed a lot since the 1960s, the team itself seems as resolutely working-class as it ever was - there was no space in the squad for the genuinely posh Patrick Bamford of Leeds United (of the JCB digger dynasty), a public school footballer in the mould of Frank Lampard - whose A* in Latin GCSE probably made him ...

It's half a decade since we watched in horror as the Grenfell Tower fire took hold. At the time the Government promised that such a tragedy would never happen again, but in England alone, 10,000 buildings are still considered unsafe. Imagine the stress of being trapped in such a building, scared that it could go on fire at any time. To mark the fifth anniversary, Lib Dem Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper and peer Kath Pinnock had called for a statutory public enquiry with the power to summon witnesses to give evidence under oath and demand disclosure of any relevant evidence. ...

Lib Dem Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Layla Moran has said that Boris Johnson is debasing the office of Prime Minister by proposing breaching international law in the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill. She said: It's astounding that at exactly the moment when we should be standing united with our allies in the face of Russia's aggression, the Conservative Government has decided to ignite a diplomatic firestorm. "From breaking his own laws at home to attempting to breach international law abroad, Boris Johnson has debased the office of Prime Minister. "If the Conservatives enact these proposals, they risk starting a trade war with ...

Residents may recall that some months ago, Fraser took part in a walkabout around the Perth Road district shopping centre, the purpose of which was to look at possible environmental improvements that could be funded through the Town Centre Fund. In terms of possible viable projects, three were identified - Pennycook Lane outside the police station, the Miller's Wynd car park and area around the West End Community Fridge and the Sinderins "triangle." The council's City Development Department has now created "concept drawings" for Miller's Wynd and Pennycook Lane (Sinderins "triangle" to follow) and these are shown in the photos ...
