It seems churlish to complain about an issue that covers the great Market Harborough bungalow mystery, but the Eye TV column this time is piss poor. Take its author Remote Controller's description of Andrew Flintoff as "the last-but-one 'next Botham'". The rest of us stopped talking about "the next Botham" almost 20 years ago when, er, Andrew Flintoff established himself as a test-class allrounder. He didn't stay at the peak of his form for many summers, but while he did he was a key member of the side. And because that peak included the classic 2005 Ashes series, Flintoff will ...

The Mirror reports that UK taxpayers have already shelled out £120 million to Rwanda over the controversial deportation project - and won't get it back if judges torpedo the scheme. The High Court is currently weighing up whether the controversial plan - unveiled by Priti Patel earlier this year - is legal, with deportations understood to be on hold until at least September. However, officials from the central African nation have said that the cash is already committed, and much of it already been spent, and so will not be returned. Furthermore, the UK's high commissioner to Rwanda Joanne Lomas, ...

Life in lockdown led me to a new discovery. People were allowed outdoors once a day for exercise. I discovered my local park as a result. Pre-lockdown most of my days were spent traipsing around Central London for work purposes. I hardly ever slowed down. Walking was associated with productivity, hardly ever for leisure. These ... The end of another week at Bonkers Hall. This is the first of these diaries to appear on my blog without having first appeared in Liberator and Lord Bonkers is delighted with the experiment. "Why don't we do this every week?" he asked just now. "Think of all the good things people currently miss: my thoughts on Free Trade, my dealings with the Elves of Rockingham Forest, the latest sighting of the Rutland Water Monster...." Believe me, that's not going to happen. At least Meadowcroft seems to have forgiven him for the incident with the fly whisk. Sunday As it ...

Edwyn Collins was the lead singer with the Scottish post-punk band Orange Juice and later enjoyed solo success, notably with A Girl Like You in 1995. In 2005 he suffered two cerebral haemorrhages. The Observer journalist Euan Feguson met him in 2007, as he was slowly recovering: Edwyn can't, thanks to the right hand, strum any more, but he does manage mean chords. He limps up and across to fetch a guitar and shows me how the simple placing of fingers on frets can be made to work, especially if amped up. "I use an amplifier on it, hammer away ...

Buses are the cinderella of transport. We hear a lot about trains, the inconvenience of delays, strikes and buckled rails. But we don't hear much about buses. Yet there were more than four billion local bus passenger journeys in England in the year ending March 2020 before the pandemic. Numbers inevitably declined during the pandemic and have not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels, especially among concessionary pass passengers. Many rural areas do not have a local train service. Rural buses are literally a lifeline. But unlike services in some cities, rural buses have been in steep decline. On Wednesday, Helen ...

Tom Arms' World Review

Europe is burning sounds like the title of an apocalyptic Hollywood blockbuster. Unfortunately it is an accurate newspaper headline as the continent this week sweltered in record temperatures. In normally temperate Britain the thermometer topped 104 fahrenheit. In Spain it reached 109. Spontaneous fires were widespread. The London fire brigade reported its busiest day since the Blitz. Grass and forest fires broke out in France, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy. In Greece alone there were 390 forest fires in one week. The high pressure system responsible for the heatwave is now over Poland and is expected to continue eastwards reaching ...
