Embed from Getty Images One of the more entertaining aspects of Leicestershire politics is the mutual antipathy between Keith Vaz (Labour MP for Leicester East) and Andrew Bridgen (Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire). The latest manoeuver in the battle is reported by the Sun: Counter-fraud cops last night confirmed they were looking into allegations against shamed Labour MP Keith Vaz. The National Crime Agency said it was taking questions over his unexplained £4million wealth "very seriously". They made the revelation to Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, who has demanded a probe into how Mr Vaz has amassed such a large ...

ALDE's Balkan Serenade

The Sofia ALDE (Alliance of Liberal Democrats for Europe) Council finished this evening with a dinner reception in the Lozenets Residence, a nostalgic monument to Communist grandeur; once an officers' club it now serves as a government entertainment venue, with live music, rather good food and decor that took me back to 1960s Eastern Europe: [...]

A Liberal Democrat press release brings the news: Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine has joined her constituent Karen Gray, whose son Murray suffers from a form of epilepsy, to present a petition to the Prime Minister calling for cannabidiol to be made available on the NHS. Murray suffers from a form of epilepsy and this treatment could alleviate his symptoms and improve his quality of life. Ms Jardine is now seeking to secure a debate in the House of Commons to highlight Murray's case. Lib Dems in the news over drugs and secrecy - for the right reasonsA former Liberal ...

Jason Zadrozny, a former Liberal Democrat who faced police charges ahead of the 2015 general election and subsequently left the party even though the charges were later dropped, has continued his political career. He's now just become leader of Ashfield Council: Labour has lost control of a Nottinghamshire council following a vote of no confidence in its leader. The party had lost its majority on Ashfield District Council after two members joined the Conservatives in March and six more became independents. Council leader Cheryl Butler refused to resign, leading to the vote on Thursday night. Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield ...

"This started as a conversation in a pub a few weeks ago, and turned into one of the more ridiculous videos I've ever done. We send home-made garlic bread skyward on a balloon; exposed it to the stratosphere, 35km up; successfully returned it to earth in a protective box; and then ate it. It tasted... cold" - Tom Scott

Facebook Doesn't Plan to be GDPR Compliant What to do on BBC Question Time ... and this is why I haven't watched it for years. Depressingly accurate. Woman and 11-year-old son terrified as four men hurl racist abuse on crowded Leeds train "He said he didn't understand how that was offensive"!!!!! That's one copper who needs a disciplinary RIGHT there. miss_s_b | The Blood is the Life for 27-04-2018 I posted The Blood is the Life for 27-04-2018 to my dreamwidth blog If you like what you see here (or even if you don't) please consider dropping me a tip: ...

I don't agree with a lot of what Donald Trump says. That's shocking, I know. Additionally, I must admit that my gut reaction to the news that good old Donald was coming to visit was a negative one. However, after giving a little more thought and discussing it with people who follow other political ideals, I've come to the conclusion that it's a little more nuanced. Trump may be controversial, but he is still the leader of one of the world's most powerful countries, and one of the UK's best allies, and in the current international climate, we most definitely ...

Not that brilliantly, to be honest. Of the fifteen seats we've selected so far, just 6 have selected women and 9 have selected men. When you add in the 4 women and 8 men who will be defending their seats, you get 10 women and 17 men. That's not an impressive record. More worryingly, there is only one non-white face in there. Vince talked the other day of the importance of getting more BAME candidates not just selected but elected as MPs. He told The Muslim News: Sir Vince Cable acknowledged that his party was not "yet fully representative of ...

Being a cyclist I get used to cycle paths ending in odd places (probably where the money runs out!) but one place in Melling just past Junction 1 of the M58 is a real pain and it's potentially dangerous too. Below is a shot of the ending, where the cycle path rejoins the road:- The motorway junction is behind the camera. The effect of the cycle path ending here is that a cyclist has to look right around behind them to see if the traffic is clear before rejoining the road. But the joining place is too close to the ...

With a leadership contest pending, the move to reform Welsh Labour's voting system to bring it in line with other elements of their UK party has suddenly become more urgent. As the BBC report, the recent election of a deputy leader for the Welsh Labour Party reinvigorated the debate about the influence of the Trade Unions and the rather bizarre electoral college, a debate that was last live when Rhodri Morgan was defeated by Alun Michael for the leadership back in 1998. The controversy may have something to do with the fact that the losing candidate won a bigger share ...
