I've written about the various planning applications submitted by the Mercedes dealership on Manchester Road many times before. I am again dismayed to see that the council have done nothing about the continued destruction of trees and green spaces by LSH Autos, who own that particular Mercedes franchise. The following planning application has been approved: [...]

Most Lib Dems would feel a bit worried if the Daily Mail expressed any admiration for them, let's be honest. Today, many of us felt huge pride in our amazing 82 year old Welsh peer – and frequent LDV contributor – Roger Roberts when he was attacked on the front page of the Fail. His son Gareth lauded him on Twitter: My father attacked on today's front page of @DailyMailUK – he's a man who has stood up all his life for fairness, equality and working together with all people from all countries and creeds to eradicate poverty. He's 82 ...

Sajid Javid has been urged to dump the controversial Immigration Exemption Clause from the Data Protection Bill when it returns to the Commons next week. Vince Cable and Ed Davey have written to the new Home Secretary to urge him to protect people's fundamental rights when their data is being processed for immigration purposes. Many immigration decisions are overturned at appeal because the Home Office has made mistakes. But the bill puts at risk the right for individuals to see what information the Home Office holds on them and the Lib Dems are pressuring the government to make a concession ...

St Mary, Cromford

There is something incongruous about this late 18th-century church, which stands among stone outcrops and beside the River Derwent. It was originally planned as a chapel for Willersley Castle, the stately home Richard Arkwright had built but died before he could enjoy. He now lies in the crypt beneath St Mary's. The church will come into its own when my plan to move Parliament to Cromford comes to fruition.

Embed from Getty Images We have seen Jack Hickey, the boy chairman of Leicester Conservatives, promise the city a tram system (though we have not heard him say how be proposes to pay for it). We have seen that the city's only Tory councillor, Ross Grant, does not think much of the idea. The latest news is that this opposition may have cost Grant the chance to defend his seat next year. The Leicester Mercury reports that the city Conservatives held a selection meeting last week and Grant was not chosen to fight his Knighton ward: The Mercury asked Leicester ...

Embed from Getty Images China has banned Peppa Pig, reports the Guardian: The wildly popular children's character was recently scrubbed from Douyin, a video sharing platform in China, which deleted more than 30,000 clips. The hashtag #PeppaPig was also banned, according to the Global Times, a state-run tabloid newspaper. The seemingly innocuous cartoon's downfall appears to be no fault of its creators. Instead the problem is Peppa's association with counterculture memes and "society people" - a slang term for lowlifes and gangsters. People who upload videos of Peppa Pig tattoos and merchandise and make Peppa-related jokes "run counter to the ...

May Day in Vissenaken

I hadn't seen B for a while, so visited this morning to take advantage of the good weather, and took her out on a walk in the Rozendaalbeek valley around Vissenaken, about a quarter of an hour's drive from where she lives. It's quite nicely laid out; you start in the car park of the St Maartenskerk (an 18th century building replacing a place of ancient pilgrimage; the cult of St Martin is of course an interesting medieval topic in its own right). Spring has firmly taken root and summer is not too far off, despite the weekend's cold and ...

Commenting on PMI figures which show the lowest growth in the manufacturing sector since Autumn 2016, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Vince Cable said: "Today's survey data confirms that the significant slowdown in overall economic growth reported last week is hurting British manufacturers. While the weaker pound and robust global growth may have propped up the sector for a while, this could not compensate for the deepening economic uncertainty caused by Brexit, as the PMI survey itself concludes. "One of the major reasons for the uncertainty in manufacturing is the very disruptive impact on supply chains from leaving the EU. ...

With Sajid Javid now settling into the Home Office, talk amongst some Tory MPs has turned to who was responsible for leaking the documents that led to his predecessors downfall. As the Telegraph reports, some cabinet ministers are demanding an inquiry into how Whitehall leaks resulted in what they consider to be the "targeted killing" of Amber Rudd's leadership of the Home Office. They say that friends of Amber Rudd are furious about the way civil servants were able to undermine her by apparently leaking documents about immigration policy, forcing the Home Secretary to quit on Sunday evening. Beers in Malta

I have just returned from my holidays in Malta. We go every year, at about this time, as we feel "at home" there. One thing that I did note about Malta is the beer industry is expanding rapidly and craft beers are becoming available. For many years Maltese beer has been dominated by Simonds Farsons Cisk. They produce their own brands of "British Style" beers , as well as representing international brands either brewed under license or imported. When there I usually stick to their brands, Hop Leaf ( a pale ale) Blue Label ( a darker beer, often misdescibed ...

I will not comment on the messages themselves, or about whether Councillor Walls' messages were racist in nature. However I will say that when you hold public office, whether as a minister of the Crown, or as an unpaid town / parish councillor, you have to be VERY careful about what you post.
