Well, there's nothing more we can do. The polls have closed. Knackered candidates and their teams who have been up since dawn now head to their counts. A massive thanks to everyone who has been involved in the campaigns – the literature writers, data whizzes, organisers, deliverers, canvassers, candidates, poster people, agents, people who keep the Lib Dem army marching on its stomach, people who allow their homes to be used as temporary HQ We know that this isn't going to be a massively brilliant night for us. This one in the electoral cycle has been historically brutal. The best ...

For a while I was not certain where this photograph was taken. I thought it might be Barnstaple, but I was not convinced I had been there as early as 1982. Now I have managed to dredge up a few memories of the trip and found similar photos on the Derelict Places site and on Disused Stations too. But this is not the Barnstaple station you travel to from Exeter today. This is Barnstaple Town, which was more centrally placed and closed in 1970 with the line to Ilfracombe. Until then the current Barnstaple station was known as Barnstaple Junction. ...

Photo from Geograph © Stephen Craven I have a new hero: the person from Penge. In a tweet today the Guardian's Peter Walker reported from a polling station there: One person apparently had ID but disliked the idea so much they opted to not vote.Because there is something profoundly unBritish about such demands to show officialdom your papers. Indeed I rather grew up with the idea that not having to carry an identity card was a sort of reward for Britain having won the war. We British preferred things to be a little informal. We trusted one another and preferred ...

Embed from Getty Images This Law runs: Beware of arguments that involve expressing indignation on behalf of a third party. To see what I mean, look at a typical debate over education. The Conservatives propose a reform. Labour attacks it on the grounds that it is an insult to teachers. Conservatives respond by accusing Labour of not trusting parents. The purpose of this style of argument, on both sides, is avoid the merits of the reform being discussed. Since you ask, Calder's first four Laws of Politics are: If all parties are united in support of a measure, it will turn ...

A couple of spinoff short story collections published recently, featuring two of the strong female characters of the Moffat era. The Missy Chronicles, by James Goss, Cavan Scott, Paul Magrs, Peter Anghelides, Jacqueline Rayner and Richard Dinnick Second para of third story ("Teddy Sparkles Must Die", by Paul Magrs):Jack spared his younger sister a scornful glance. 'I'm not scared of her. She's only a servant.'Six stories here, and reading through other people's reviews I am struck by how different everyone's take is. However, most people single out "Girl Power!" by Jacqueline Rayner as a favourite, and I agree - it's ...

Lib Dem MP Stephen Lloyd is supporting a campaign to save the East Sussex Music Service. He wrote in his newsletter: Sadly the budget cuts just keep rolling in from East Sussex County Council, and they're now planning severe reductions to our music services. The absolutely brilliant East Sussex Music Service (ESMS) are celebrating their 84th year; they deliver music lessons to around 7000 children in schools across the county per annum and 1000 children, aged between 4 and 18, attend area music centres each week. Despite this success, the county council have announced plans are being made to close ...

It was the impending World Cup that made me think of it – Gazetta Football Italia, I mean. I'm slightly dreading the next version of the tournament finals to determine which nation rules supreme in the sport of association football for various reasons, part of which is general Putin-phobia, but I feel certain I would still be approaching the World Cup with trepidation even if wasn't taking place in a fascist dictatorship with a chip on its shoulder. Truth is, I think the football of today is less interesting than it was back in the 90s and early 2000s, and ...

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have warned that a rigorous approach to children's services is necessary to secure the quality services needed. This follows from the WLGA claiming children's services in Wales are nearly at "crisis point." The past nine years have seen a 149% increase in court applications to remove children into care. Between March 2009 and March 2007 there was a 27% increase in the number of children in care in Wales. Cllr Rhys Taylor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Equalities Spokesperson commented: Whilst the WLGA are right to highlight financial constraints as a key issue, increased budgets on their own ...

I'm not going to tell you who to vote for: that's between you and your conscience. But please go to the polling station. Even if it's to spoil your ballot. Also, here's a thing I'm quite proud of. A couple of days ago we were chatting among the LGBT+LDs exec about what we were doing for the elections and somebody said "it'd be nice if we could do something nice for our out candidates on the day". And then somebody else said "maybe tweet them a good luck message?". So we put out a call for people to send us ...

Clearing out the Hornby display display cabinets at Meadows Leisure Centre ready for their move upstairs. Things seem to be moving along well and it looks like the timetable for the move is on track. We expect our moved display cabinets to be in place by this coming weekend. Once that is done we will need to organise the rehanging of pictures, signage etc. together with the refilling of the cabinets of course. The 14th May is presently the target date for reopening of the remodeled Leisure Centre, I understand. An issue we picked up on, due to the keen ...

The Independent reports that the Conservatives have blocked attempts to force the government to release internal documents relating to the Windrush scandal. They say that the House of Commons voted down the proposal after the Tories ordered their MPs to oppose it. Labour had tried to use an archaic parliamentary procedure to force the government to hand over the files, which they said would reveal how much ministers knew about the problems facing Windrush generation immigrants: The party had hoped to use a technique known as a "motion to return" to compel the government to release the Windrush papers to ...

There is widespread frustration at the failure of partisan politics and traditional economics to reduce the toxic inequality that causes financial hardship, diminishes personal opportunity and restricts social mobility. While it is clear that voters want these issues addressed, plainly demonstrated in the ballot box in June 2016 and June 2017, the political parties offer [...] The post We can all agree on something appeared first on Radix.

There are local elections being held across much of England today. You have until 10pm to vote. Good luck to everyone taking part in democracy today. A little extra good wishes to fellow Liberal Democrats of course, but the horrors of the election campaign are a reminder to believers in democracy how much we have in common in addition to our passionate differences. Voting in person Polling stations are open between 7am and 10pm today. You don't need your polling card to vote. But in five areas (Bromley, Gosport, Swindon, Watford and Woking) new rules are being piloted and you ...
