Queniborough dovecote

Unencumbered by any guidebooks, I reported to the Haymarket bus station in Leicester and picked the most interesting destination offered by the next few departures. I chose Queniborough and found this dovecote, along with blossom and a bridge, in a field beyond he church. It turns out that it originally stood in the grounds of the Hall and was moved brick by brick to its new location in the 1980s to allow development. So not Proper then, but still a lovely thing to find - as the crows have shown.

Third page: I got this having hugely enjoyed Culbard's graphic novel version of At the Mountains of Madness a few years ago. I'm sorry to say that this didn't work for me so well; it's not as visual a story, and the central characters (Charles Dexter Ward, the narrator Willett and the ancient necromancer Curwen) are not especially interesting characters. It's interesting that Lovecraft himself thought this was not one of his best efforts, and the original story remained unpublished until 1941, several years after he had died. Still, if you want to, you can get it here. This was ...

The following facts are taken from a recent article in the Guardian by Sonia Sodha. The fee for obtaining citizenship for a child born in the UK to parents "not settled" here is over £1 000 (The Home office makes a profit of £640 on each case). If they don't obtain this such children, when they grow up, may not be entitled to work, use the NHS or:go to university (unless they pay "international student" fees, which are astronomically higher, with no student loans). For children in care, the fee of £1 000+ must be paid by the Local Authority, which may ...

Between the two big parties, the Liberal Democrats are significant now, uniquely placed to be able to work for the health and healing of our divided and unhappy nation, having proved our capacity in the local government elections. In these elections, Labour and the Conservatives reached stalemate again, neither being able to see how these results could foretell sufficient success in the next General Election. Their divisions are deep and their failings clearer than ever, the one tainted by the Windrush scandal, the other by voters' lack of confidence that they could tackle anti-semitism amongst their members. The divisions in ...

Corbynistas continue to gnash their teeth about the local election results, alternatively blaming Blairite sabotage, the MSM, and the Tories piloting voter ID (which probably affected 0.0000000001% of the electorate, but never mind). What they may wish to consider is how bad the party's position is on Brexit. While the fudge may have been seen to have been convenient given the 2017 general election result, I would argue Labour's deliberately fuzzy stance is now adversely affecting them – and this tendency will only increase if they continue to be hazy on the issue of Brexit. Think of it this way: ...

Labour may be claiming their best result in London in 1971, but elections are all about expectation management and the media this morning is full of talk about possible hung Parliaments, predicated on what was actually a very poor performance by the official opposition and a tenacious Conservative Party that cannot quite bring itself to self-destruct properly. The real story of Thursday's local elections was the performance of the Liberal Democrats. Vote share is up 5%, we have 75 more Councillors than we did before and, not only did we hold all the councils we were defending but we gained ...

Here are some pictures of happy, successful Liberal Democrats from all over the country. Enjoy – and then then get out there and build on the good results. Whether you think of the 2018 as our best local elections showing in 15 years or the second biggest rise in councillor numbers for this set of elections in our history, there are lots of exuberantly joyful moments to savour: Congratulations to our LibDem colleagues in Hull who are 7 seats up on Hull City Council this morning. Reportedly, beaten Labour candidates walked out of the Council chamber as more seats fell ...

Liberal Democrat peer Malcolm Bruce called on the government to follow the lead of many other countries and back a National Video Relay service. This well established technology allows sign language users to access interpreters online, anytime, anywhere. The cost would be minimal in a £40 billion a year market but its benefits would be transformational allowing sign language users to dial up an interpreter to help with communication at work, in accessing public or private services and for social interaction with family and friends. The deaf community have been campaigning for this for years but the Government have so far failed to ...

What an odd set of results we have seen from Thursday's local elections which were fought against the background of an appalling hard Brexit being promoted by both Labour as the Official Opposition and the Tories as our Government. Only the Lib Dems and Greens of the UK-wide parties could be clearly identified as Remain. Locally in Sefton and in particular the Southport Constituency the Lib Dems gathered the most votes across the 7 wards yet they only won 2 of those wards – Meols and Birkdale. A big factor in these elections has been the almost complete destruction of ...

Blyth Town Council have reorganised the committee structure. To quote from the BTC website :- "Blyth Town Council are introducing new Governance arrangements which will take effect from May 10 2018. In addition to Full Council, there will be three main Committees, these will be the Community Development, Environment Committee and Governance. The responsibilities of these Committees are as follows: Community Development: Community Grants and Events Environment Committee: Allotments, Environmental Services and Planning Governance: Finance, Policy Working Group, Staffing and Complaints." I don't know the reasoning behind this reorganisation, but a cynic would point out that fewer meetings means less ...
